If my doc said I needed it, I'd take it. You have to drink a LOT of fluids to counteract the effects of constant diarrhea. What you drink will pass through you far too quickly. Definitely switch to gatorade or pedialyte, though (if you can't get to a store, find a recipe for a makeshift version online. I think you can add a little salt and a little sugar...maybe something else, I don't know).

Pre-term labor from dehydration is serious business!

I had a stomach bug and got very dehydrated very quickly. My ob said the risk of preterm labor as a result of dehydration was much more dangerous than a dose of Imodium. One half dose was all I needed.

Immodium is on the 'ok' list of meds from my dr. If I needed it that bad I'd be taking it.

@cherrybee: Haha, yeah here we eat it more often than just with pork, lol. My husband likes to just eat it with cinnamon. My MIL always likes to have it with her pork, though...she's from Germany, so apparently that's more European?

@Mrsbells: It's just for the diarrhoea, nothing else. Yeah, I'm minded to agree....

@MsLipGloss: Re hydration drinks are a good idea! I've just been drinking water up until now!

@katiew92081: Applesauce?? Like the stuff you have with roast pork, for your Sunday dinner?? Really??!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. It's like the Matrix - I'm looking at this little capsule trying to decide whether to take it or not!! For the record, I would totally have stayed in the Matrix!!

@Cherrybee: I'd take it, without a doubt. Dehydration when you're preggers is awful, especially if you get morning sickness, it really compounds it.

No, don't take it. The diarrhea is your body's way of getting the virus and all the crap that goes with it out of your system. My husband was told this by a doctor a few weeks ago when he was having issues.

Stay on a BRAT diet...bananas, rice, applesauce and toast and stay hydrated. Don't eat anything greasy or spicy.

You'll be better in just a couple days...don't risk long term damage to your baby for just a couple days this bug.

I've taken immodium a few times and its helped. My midwife approves it also, but like you I was a but worried so I only took half the dose.

Can you get a second opinion? Even so, you may want to consider the medication . . . Are you drinking drinks with electrolytes in them (or sports drinks designed to help hydrate) . . . with your bowels in the condition they are in, you may not be able to get the benfits of the amount of water you are drinking.

What is immodium for? Is it just for the diarrhea or is it curing something else? If its just for the diarrhea I wouldnt take it, I would try other options like eating foods that slow down bowel movement, foods high in iron and lots of white bread and then drink lots of fluid too

Right... I've had a stomach bug (probably that pesky Norovirus) for four days now!! Four days!! The fevers/chills/aching limbs/thinking-I-might-die bit only lasted two days but the diarrhoea just keeps on coming. Sigh.

I spoke to my doctor on the telephone today and he advised me to take Immoduim. Immoduim is not recommended for use in pregnancy - but he said that the risk to the baby from the medication was slightly lower, in his opinion, than the risks associated with persistent diarrhoea - eg dehydration and pre-term labour. What????! Agh!

What would you do?? I'm drinking loads of water to prevent dehydration..... I really don't want to take anything that will harm the baby.... but I'm scared I will harm the baby by not taking it, too.....

ps - this is how we spell diarrhoea over here! lol.
