@littlebug: yeah, I don't know for sure. My dr. said the same thing yours did, and he's not fussier than normal. So hopefully I'm wrong and it's nothing! Luckily we don't really eat much dairy so it's not a huge deal to limit myself.

@allison: D has green poops a lot. I asked our ped about it cuz I was Shari concerned it was dairy intolerance. She said as long as he's not crazy fussy (he's not) and there's no blood in his diaper (never), then it's just his body reacting to whatever I'm eating. I eat a ton of spinach, so I figure that's probably it. Even my expressed milk looks greenish sometimes!

I'm pretty sure my LO has a dairy intolerance. He's 3 months old. I thought he might from the beginning when he had some green poop after I ate some yogurt. I didn't cut out all dairy products, just obvious ones (I still ate chocolate and some processed stuff, for example). I've also been eating a little butter every day on toast. But recently I ate some cheese tortellini, then ate lasagna the next day, and he's been having green poop again. So I'm now convinced he's dairy intolerant, but only when it's in large amounts. But all that to say that you might not have to cut out every single thing. My LO has never had blood in his poop, though.

@jodyblair: I echo all the things that @runsyellowlites and @Mrs. Jacks said. We have been dairy and soy free for 8 mo now and it really is do-able.

I thought LO had a dairy allergy at 7 weeks so I cut out visible dairy (milk, yogurt cheese) and continued to eat dairy that was cooked in things. LO seemed much better. At our 2mo appointment we had green/blood/mucuous in the diaper. Pedi confirmed dairy allergy and we cut out any and all forms of dairy and soy.

I have a large spreadsheet of 'common' prepackaged foods that have been a huge help for us if you'd like me to email it to you.

@jodyblair: I did not sadly.. I needed to go all in. But a good friend of mine was able to start eating things with trace amounts when here LO was about 6 months and now that her LO is 9 months she's even able to do limited amounts of cheese.

Clearly, I meant a dairy intolerance, not diary...can you tell I typed this one handed while holding a fussy newborn.

I guess my next question is has anyone had success with just eliminating the major culprits (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc) and not removing trace amounts that are found in just about EVERYTHING you can imagine?

Yup you definitely want to cut all forms. And maybe go ahead and cut soy too since milk protein and soy protein intolerances often go hand in hand. @Mrs. Jacks' post was also really helpful for me so definitely check that out. It did take a few weeks to see real improvement so don't give up if you don't see a change right away. It can be reall tough to stick to (in my case my LO is also intolerant to wheat, eggs, nuts and shellfish)... But it's SO worth it when you see they are feeling better!

Mrs. Jacks has a great blog post on MSPI & it's got alot of resources on it!

http://www.hellobee.com/2012/06/04/beyond-colic-milksoy-protein-intolerance/

It helped us tremendously when we started!

There's also an MSPI Moms group I'm part of where I've found great resources:
http://babybumpapp.com/community/groups/3084-mspi-moms/posts/3108036-resources-for-mspi-moms-add-yours
http://babybumpapp.com/community/groups/3084-mspi-moms/posts/1953417-that-sneaky-dairy

You'll definitely have to remove all dairy, even from cooked items, atleast at first BUT we saw a great deal of improvement in just a few days! Ultimately we had to cut alot more than just dairy, but it was doable & we made it a year being dairy, soy, wheat, nut, tree nut, & caffeine free! I was finally able to add things back her in the last couple weeks & have been able to give P all but dairy & nuts/tree nuts directly (still waiting for that).

Definitely hang in there! It's tough at first but does get easier!

@jodyblair: Yes you need to remove all forms, even forms with trace amounts, not just the obvious ones. This link from FARE might help you identify some of the ingredients to avoid: http://www.foodallergy.org/allergens/milk-allergy. There is a link at the very bottom to a PDF that you can print to bring with you shopping.

For us it took 6 weeks for dairy to clear our systems and for us to stop seeing blood. Hang in there. Now that you have hopefully identified the problem you can eliminate it and help your baby feel better.

Yup you need to cut out everything- milk, butter, cheese etc. Also start reading labels on everything- dairy pops up in lots of things you wouldn't expect. Good luck- I'm two months in and it's still a struggle for me.

I am exclusively breastfeeding our 4 week old son and he has been eating well and steadily gained weight. In the last 2 weeks or so, we have noticed he has been really fussy after feedings with lots of gas and he just seems really uncomfortable and in pain. We attributed it to normal newborn fussiness, but while we were at the pediatrician's office today for his one month checkup, his poop was green with streaks of blood in it. Had we not been at the office already I probably would have panicked! The pediatrician said he probably has an intolerance to cow's milk protein. Today has been his fussiest day ever and it makes complete sense...yesterday for breakfast I had a bowl of cereal, yogurt with lunch, cheese before dinner, and a bowl of ice cream for dessert. I feel so horrible that I am the reason he has been so miserable. So now I need to eliminate dairy from my diet. My question is, how do I do this? Do I need to cut out all forms of dairy, even if it is cooked into food? Do I just need to stop eating raw forms of it? I know this is somewhat common, so hopefully some experienced mamas can help me out. I just want our little guy to feel better!
