I didn't do anything about it during my last pregnancy (3rd) and wish I had. I had a 4 finger separation after this last baby! now it's down to 3/2.5 with specific dr exercises. But I second laying on your side to get up and down from laying, and no crunches or planks!

I follow a New Zealand-based personal trainer on Instagram who specialises in pregnancy and postnatal fitness and her IG and website has some really good stuff! She's at http://www.pregnancyexercise.co.nz :-)

With diastasis recti, you really want to avoid too much intra-abdominal pressure. So things like crunches are terrible. Yoga is great because it encourages the activation of the core muscles-specifically the transverse abdominus (TA). Here is a great video on how to engage the TA- though I would recommend doing it sitting while pregnant.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p8O04WLXFt8

I would suggest a binder to help to approximate the muscle fibers of the rectus abdominus, especially while doing anything that increases the pressure in the abdominals-like lifting (groceries, other kids, etc), cleaning , lots of bending and yoga.

I'm a women's health PT, but always consult your doctor. Good luck!

@kitty: thanks. I have to figure out what my next steps are. I do yoga but it's not special prenatal yoga--I just modify some stuff. I think maybe it's time to modify more...

I got it but ai didn't realise there was anything I could do at the time. I think you can do pregnancy pilates which may help, and possibly just ensure that you never get up from a lying down position by trying to sit straight up, rather roll onto your side and push up that way. I had to see a physiotherapist about mine and I think it's helping.

If you got diastasis recti, what did you do about it during pregnancy?

I'm 30 weeks with my second child.
With my son, I got it, but never felt it happening and it was only a few inches so I was able to exercise and get most of it back together.

This week, I literally felt the stinging pain of it ripping more, directly on the linea alba/midline, under my belly button. And now it looks flat/scooped out where it was round before. Is there anything I can do to stop it from getting worse while still pregnant?

:(

whine whine...

Thank you!
