I am a certified reading specialist and a kindergarten teacher. My district uses DIBELS. If she's performing well on her curriculum based tests and you are happy with her progress I wouldn't worry. The tests are timed and could vary depending on the administrator of the test. For example, there are 2 reading specialists in my building and the one who does my class must time in the same way as the other because my class always has lower scores. It is in one minute increments so seconds make a big difference. Ours are also done in the hallway so if a kid walks down the hall and then the student looks up smiles and waves, you just lost some time. Was it the same person who gave the test to her? She might not have been as comfortable with the new person. If her teacher isn't concerned, I wouldn't be!

@JennyPenny: @JoyfulKiwi: @FaithFertility: thanks ladies. I spoke briefly to her teacher who echoed that I shouldn’t worry. She also reminded me of something I wasn’t considering. My girl is in a language Immersion program. Her second language really grew recently which might also be having an impact. She also let me know she’s in the top two in the class of 26 for reading and her second language skills.

I’m overreacting to my parents lack of involvement in my education and having no one pushing me to excel.

@MamaG: I have never used dibles, but if it measures reading fluency, phonetic awareness that is something that we see in first grade go down some times EOY
Reasons: Student isn't using letter sounds fluently anymore to decode words since they are becoming fluent so her fluency in that might drop which is kind of a good thing

Also as readers begin to read for comprehension there Word per minute might drop because they are now reading for meaning, reading slower and self correcting
All great things, I wouldn't worry at all!

@MamaG: I would not be concerned at all. DIBELS is only an indicator of early literacy skills, used to predict how well/easily a child can learn to read. Blue is beyond proficient, so she’s doing great, regardless of the technical numbers.

I have only passing knowledge of DIBELS but I do think I remember that they do different tests BOY, MOY and EOY and for different grades, and the composite scores are just sums of those tests. So you could use it to compare against other kids, but not necessarily for your own MOY to EOY. It might be different now though...

I didn’t bring her sheet with me, but from MOY to EOY the DORF scores dropped slightly but the composite went down by over 100 pts, 424 to 316. Also reading level only increased one level. I know she’s an above average reader and all her scores are blue but should the slip be concerning? Also she’s finishing 1st grade.
