for the most part i'd say that works for us. it takes some time for it to take though -- i would try it for at least a week before deciding if it works or not. our three (4, 2.5. 7m) go down at 7:30 and are up around 6:30/7. there are nights that we stay up super late if we're out, and i find then there's no real telling what will happen... some times they sleep in, other times they are up even earlier than normal. for us consistency works best, but not always easy to do! :)

Sort of! I can at least say with 100% certainty that later bedtimes made DS wake up earlier. So it was pretty infuriating to hear that advice from basically everyone. But on the nights when we get him in bed by 6:15 as opposed to 6:45 he usually sleeps past 7am when his normal wake-up time is 6:30. He did go through a horrible almost year-long phase of waking at 4:30/5 and nothing we did helped until he eventually outgrew it. It was horrible and frustrating and the main reason why I never ask other parents when their children wake up or offer unsolicited advice.

And daycare just called and said she only napped for 30 minutes and seemed super tired. Poor thing! Ugh sleep can be hard for on the toddlers and the parents.

DD has always gone to bed between 6-7, never later, and we have still had some issues with early wakeups. Who knows, maybe it would be worse if she had a later bedtime though.

My 2.5 year old was doing great (had a couple months of waking at close to 7) and now just started waking earlier. She's up at around 6 these days, which has thrown us off. I've noticed she's been fighting bedtime more and more, and has been going down later than before. No idea if an earlier bedtime will lead to later wakeups, but I may give it a try (although easier said than done these days...she just doesn't like to go to bed when the sun is still up, which makes it harder and harder to get her in bed).

My LO is waking up super early now too. It's been going on for a few months and now I am starting to think that he just is low sleep needs. We tried putting him down earlier (6:30 instead of 7) and he just tossed around the crib for an hour and still woke up at 5:30. Over the weekend we were in central time zone and he went to bed late and slept later - which makes me think it is a sleep needs issue... aka, he likes getting up after 10 1/2 hours and that's all we are going to get.

I'm having the same issue with my DS (26months), he's had terrible ear infections the past 3 months and we finally did tubes two weeks ago. I was hoping the early wake ups were due to the fluid pressure in his ears but he's still waking up around 5:30 :-(
We try to stick to our 7:30p bedtime and he goes down okay, don't know if I should move it up (don't even know how I'd manage logistically).

LO regularly woke up early until she was about 22 months, and what helped was dh going in there instead of me--he was able to get her to go back to sleep, whereas with me she'd be up for the day altogether. I was still nursing back then, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Now she usually wakes up sometime between 6:15-6:45.

My son always woke up between 5 and 5:30 until this winter (2 1/4). He started sleeping in until 6, then 7. It is the best. We actually started moving his bedtime later since my husband started a new job, so he could say good night. DS now goes to bed @ 8:30 and wakes anywhere between 6:45-7:45. He takes a solid nap of 2-3 hours in length. We try not to let him sleep past 4 pm though.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah, at daycare the naps are 1-3 and they say she is a great sleeper. If I were doing it at home on my schedule I would make 12:30. I read in two places that bedtime for toddlers should be 4 hours after the nap but I just don't think she's ready to put in bed at 7pm.

@Corduroy: Yeah she started the 5:30 wake ups at 11 months and did it pretty consistently for a year no matter what I tried. Then it went back to 6-6:30 and now its back to 5:30. Ugh I am 32 weeks pregnant and grumpy and just want 30 more minutes.

@MrsB2012: This is true for us most of the time. Like she was doing pretty well with 6am for whatever reason then we had a couple of 8:15 nights and it went back to 5:15-5:30. So she definitely has the reaction of too late bedtime too early wake up. It's hard to find the sweet spot.

@Anagram: THIS! Ugh, my worst fear. I think she honestly doesn't need more than 10 hours plus or minus 15 minutes so what's the good in making it an earlier wake up?

I haven't noticed a difference but I also have a hard time getting her to bed earlier consistently. One big factor was not letting her nap too late though- she had been taking good naps starting around 1:30, to 4 some days, but then was waking up super early. Moving naps back to one and not letting her sleep past 3 helped. But doesn't sound like that is your issue.

Yup, it's always worked for us. My oldest will be 3 in July. She naps from 1230-130/230 depending on the day, sometimes more. We were very good at getting her to bed by 7, and she would sleep until 730. Then gradually since I went back to work, dh started creeping up her bedtime. Then he would have his mom babysit, and she completely ignored her bedtime and was keeping her up until 8ish. She started waking up at 5. I had a stern talking to my husband, and we've both been very good to make sure she's in bed ( stories/songs are done) by 7. It's taken about 3 weeks, but she's finally constantly waking up at 7 again.

I've found that whenever with of my girls start waking up early, I'll put them to bed a little earlier, and they'll get back to sleeping to their normal time.

That doesn't work for us :( She usually wakes up at the same time, no matter what time she goes to bed. She does seem to sleep later if she has 2 great naps (that rarely happens though!)

For us, no. LO1 was the worst sleeper in the world (still isn't great) and for the longest time I just kept moving her bedtime earlier and earlier, hoping it would solve some of our issues. But her wake up became earlier and earlier. For about a year, she went to bed at 6:45-7:00 pm, and woke up at 5 am.

Eventually, I slowly moved her bedtime later. Now she goes to bed at 8pm and wakes at 6-6:15 am most days. She's never been one to sleep much more than 10 hours a night.

DD (2 years, 2 months) takes a nap from 1-2:45/3.

She goes into her crib on a regular night at 7:45. Wake-ups have been at 5:30am lately. Did anyone successfully solve early wake ups by making a bedtime earlier, say 7?

We have the blackest of blackout curtains and sound machine so that is not the issue.
