The paragard is copper, so shouldn't prevent you from menstruating. That said, it can take a while to get your period back and even longer for it to regulate. If you're worried I'd call your doctor. I'm pretty sure I made a few calls after getting mine in, trying to figure out if my experience was normal!

I have a copper iud and had the opposite problem. I think it jump started my period. I got it back at 2 months PP while EBF, even though I didn't get it back until 11 months PP while EBF my first LO (with mini pill). I had a lot of irregular bleeding the first few months after the copper iud insertion. I've had it almost 2 years now and get my period pretty much on schedule every month. Maybe your hormones are still out of whack from BF. Consider yourself lucky!

I've had the Mirena for just over a year, with pretty much the same experience as @lovehoneybee: - random spotting for a day every 3 months or so... I've had a few paranoid moments where I worried it wasn't working!

I had the opposite and bled for a while after the IUD was inserted. I did get AF after DS started STTN so maybe it had something to do with that... I had the IUD for a year and during I had light spotting as AF. I had it taken out on Monday and bled for a couple days after. Not sure if I'll go back on an IUD as it made me crampy and the spotting would last for days. I hear that some women have no spotting/bleeding while on the IUD - alas I was not one of those women.

I had a Mirena put in at 6wks pp. I lightly spotted off and on for about 6 weeks after. I randomly got breakthrough spotting after that...very light, lasting maybe a day, maybe once every 2-3 months, even after I weaned. With one big exception, when I heavily spotted off and on for about a month about 8 months after I got it. Never figured out what it was, even after an U/S to confirm placement. It stopped, and then was back to spotting maybe a day every couple of months.

@PrincessBaby: I had the opposite experience and had spotting / bleeding every single day for the first 4-5 months. I'm now at 8 months and I bleed every day except one week a month, I'm getting mine removed next week because of this.

I skipped my period for four years with Mirena. I only had it prepregnancy though.
I think the paraguard IUD doesn't suppress mensuration.

@MrsLonghorn: Oooooh, good to know....I can't remember what my doctor said! I know she mentioned that I wouldn't have a period anyway due to BFing, but I don't know if that was in reference to the IUD preventing a period or not! Thank you for sharing your experience!

I have only had VERY light spotting with my Mirena IUD. Inserted 6wpp, and I have had it for ~ 1 year now. My last pumping session was about 1 month ago, and this month was heavier than before but still not what I would consider an actual period.

ETA: seeing my OB for my annual exam next week, but she did tell me when I got the IUD that some women never get a period with them.

I got AF back at 11 mos PP with DD1, pretty much as soon as I got her down to 2 nursing sessions a day. Then it was regular after that, but I wasn't on any BC.

With DD2, she self-weaned at 5 months. I had Paragard inserted at my 6w PP visit. It's been a month and a half since she totally weaned and I have nothing yet. Is this normal?
