Great question! I'm considering doing this very thing (not really interested in breastfeeding "naturally'). Originally, I was going to be a formula-only mom, but am going to give pumping a try to see if that works, and supplement with formula.

All my LOs didn't care to latch on. For my first, I supplemented with formula and pumped for 10 months with enough to last till she was a year old. With my twins, no supplements and pumping for 113 days and counting!

My LO was a lazy eater. No matter how long or how much I tried, he did not want to latch. So I supplemented with formula and pumped three times daily until 7 months old. Hopefully new baby will want to latch.

@Mrs. Jacks: Washing so much stuff does really suck. I bought a few extra sets of pump parts so I could wash several at once.

I have a friend who did it for a year each for two children. She had such an issue with oversupply that her little guys couldn't handle the flow, so she chose to exclusively pump. She said it sucked to wash so much stuff but that she had more freedom in other ways. Because oversupply was her issue, she was able to stop pumping at 9 months and just use frozen supply to get to a year :)

Me (so far). DS was born tongue-tied, and with a high arched palate, and from the start he has gotten almost nothing from breast feeding. We had the tongue tie clipped and it didn't seem to do much. Now we are just hoping he'll grow out of it. While I was home on leave, I breastfed him every other feeding (for practice), for 10 minutes a side, and then pumped after that, and we would give him a bottle while I pumped (of breast milk from the previous pumping session). Now that I'm back at work, I am only home for 1 or 2 feedings on weekdays so I BF whenever I can. I think we'll be able to start doing full feeds from the breast soon, though - he really seems to be getting a lot more!

Yes! My LO was not interested in breastfeeding. It was difficult enough for him to drink from a bottle, and sucking did not come naturally to him. I starting pumping on day 2, and I have been doing it ever since. I had to supplement with formula for the first month, but my supply did meet up with his demand not long after. I still can't believe that it has been 9.5 months, and I plan on continuing until he turns one.

So far I've breastfed at the breast, but am planning on exclusively pumping for as long as possible as DS turns 1 and is weaned.

DS has food allergies and there really is not a milk alternative left for us that he does not reacts to, so I feel that breastfeeding for as long as possible is really our only option. However, I am not comfortable (personally) nursing him at the breast much past age one, which is why we will be making the switch.

I'm pumping and giving a bottle right now because my guy was born 6 weeks early and is too small to bf. We are practicing every day and I hope he "gets it" soon. It's really exhausting to feed and pump. I wish I didn't have to pump so much. Nighttime feedings would be a lot easier.

I did with my first. She just didn't want to nurse. I pumped until I had enough milk stored til she turned one.

I did. My LO had to be on phototherapy for 5 days and with the glow belt she couldn't get comfortably attached. we tried and also did some bottle feeding. after she was off phototherapy we tried to start breastfeeding again and she wouldn't latch on. I pumped. It only lasted 2 months. Next time I think I'll try harder to get her to latch on because it was alot of work to only pump.

Have any bees fed their baby breast milk but only through a breast pump? If so, why did you decide to go that route?
