I would go firm - you can always add a topper down the road if they want it softer!

@autumnlove: If you know what brand and firmness you want, there's pretty much no point in researching anyways...every store has their own different name for the same exact mattresses. And they usually don't give you enough details to really compare them. It's so annoying!

I probably won't research. I'll find something extra firm from a brand I trust like Beautyrest or Sealy.

My son likes a softer, more plush mattress, so we went with something on the plush side, but not a pillow top ( i wanted something we could flip over as needed). I expect we may have to get a new mattress in several years, I don't expect the mattress to last him until he goes away to college.

We're in the market for one right now, too, so I've been wondering the same thing. I was thinking plush would be more comfy, but @wonderstruck has me thinking about firm now. I guess his crib mattress is firm, and he's not complaining, so it must be fine.

I attempted to, but it was pointless. I ended up just setting a budget and found something with a warranty that should last through until college. I think I went with a firm with plush top sealy that I bought on us mattress. Mattress shopping in the store was too intense. Kids weigh so little, I don't think it matters!

Yes, I went crazy with it! It is so hard since they can't tell you. Basically all of my research said that a firm mattress is better for toddlers and kids and that they need more support and shouldn't really sink in. I like plush mattresses, so I was useless with picking one out. It's not here yet because we ordered it during the Memorial Day sales, but we ended up going with a Sealy Posturepedic. On a scale of 1 (firmest) to 5 (most plush) it was a 2.

ETA: Forgot the links! This was the mattress we ended up getting him. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/sealy-posturepedic-blissfield-tight-top-firm-twin-mattress-set?ID=1325816&CategoryID=65723&LinkType=#fn=BED_SIZE%3DTwin%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D7%26ruleId%3D70%26slotId%3D6

I basically just googled it for my research.

@loveisstrange: haha that's what we did with our mattress and it's killing my DH back. So yeah....
And that is why I'm buying a waterproof mattress cover!! $20 Vs $150+? No brainer.

Nah. We just laid on them in the store until we found one that was comfortable. We didn't stress since she's not potty trained and we figure she's going to pee all over it and it's going to get trashed anyway.

We're about ready to buy a mattress for our 2 year old for her big girl bed. I'm probably unnecessarily stressing out a bit about the choice of mattress. I just feel like as adults if our mattress isn't comfortable we can complain and know it. But if the mattress is uncomfortable for my two year old it'll be hard for her to convey. And I would hate to impede her developing body.

Anyway, anyone do research on what kind of mattress is best for a developing body?
Links please?
