We successfully went cold turkey for daytime, regressed over a vacation and gave up for a bit (back in diapers), then did the same method again and it stuck long term. But there's no way, even at 3+, that she's ready for overnight training yet. Even if she naps for more than 1.5 or 2 hrs, she falls into such a deep sleep that she wakes up wet. I don't think I can train her to control that, and since she's not consciously peeing her pull up at night, I don't think she's at all confused about why she goes in the toilet in daytime but wears a pull up overnight.

We went cold turkey to undies during the day with success (we tried pull-ups for a bit but they didn't work for LO, no progress at all). We didn't do cold turkey at night at the same time - we waited until LO had dry diapers in the morning for about 30 days before we ditched the nighttime diaper.

I also read the book and we start a week from Monday! I have the week off and have pulled L from daycare that week, and we are going to bite the bullet and do it all at once. He generally does best with cold turkey transitions and would totally be the kid holding in his pee and poop until nap time or bedtime if he knows he's getting a diaper then.

So obviously no advice since we haven't started yet, but sounds like we're on the same page! I got some bed pads from Walmart that stick to the top of the sheets and are soft and quite absorbent to hopefully minimize middle of the night sheet changes.

I also have some training pants I bought for him that feel/look more like regular underwear. I haven't decided if I'll put them on him for extra protection at nap time or not. Having the same debate about the car, because we'll still have to go pick up his brother from day care, so car rides those first few days are inevitable.

@regberadaisy: we're planning to potty train over Labor Day weekend, so we'll play it by ear with daycare that Tuesday, but they're on board and open to going with no diapers. If he's not there yet and really struggling at home, I'd definitely reassess!

@Truth Bombs: my daycare was definitely on board with us sending her in undies before we felt she was ready. But she was already at the stage of telling us when she needed to pee'. Not still in diapers and never potty trained.

@Applesandbananas: I'm surprised they're willing to deal with the trauma of a child that has peed all over themselves during nap time!

We did but it wasn't our idea. We put diapers on LO at night for 3 days, they just stayed dry, so we stopped putting them on her. We did the 3 day method and she was 20 months old.

We are currently weaning and also trying to eliminate liquids before bed to prep. He typically wakes up dry or mostly dry even when nursing to sleep so I'm hoping that translates to night training success.

Also, our washer and dryer are literally across the hall from his room so I'm not too worried about washing sheets a lot. I bought him a few extra sets and extra mattress protectors as part of our prep.

But this thread is definitely making me rethink our plan. I wonder if it would be too confusing to start out with full training (day, night, nap) and then put him in night diapers if there's too much bed wetting?

@regberadaisy: My daycare encouraged me to just start sending her in underwear before I was even ready so that's definitely not the case across the board.

We did go cold turkey for day time training. But I don't think night time training cold turkey is a good idea. My LO isn't choosing to pee in her diaper at night, her body just doesn't wake her up to go yet, and I don't think that can be trained away.

We used OCPT, and we threw away the diapers during the day (nap time and awake), but we kept the diapers at night. We PTed when LO was 28 months old and OCPT worked great for us. She was sleeping 12 hours at night and we had a 3 month old. I wasn't going to mess with her sleep.

We did the "throw out diapers" thing but still put him in pull ups at night. (We did no pants, then pants no underwear, then underwear and pants). BUT he night/nap trained himself. He still wears pull ups at night but they are always dry and he wakes to tell us he has to pee. Frankly I wish he'd just go in his pull up because it is a huge PITA to get up in the middle of the night so he can pee. He is only 2.5 so he won't go on his own. He needs help pulling down/up his pants and getting on the potty correctly.

I have some friends who did it and it worked quickly for one, still going for other. I didn't just because it's a lot more work for parents with cleaning sheets and having to try to get them up to pee. Sleep is too important to us.

We only went to underwear during the day (well, first we went pants-less, and then we went to underwear, which is a progression I highly recommend!). I'm familiar with Glowacki's ideas (her book wasn't out when LO trained) and I like a lot of them, but night "training" did not work for us until much more recently. LO trained around 2.5 years old and was way beyond even the occasional daytime accident before he could reliably wake up at night. As in, a year plus beyond being fully, no-accidents-at-all trained. I stressed about it for a little while, but there was no way I was going to purposely wake him up in the middle of the night. (Just...no. I'm not opposed to doing things the "hard" way if it's clearly better, but this suggestion seems to be both hard on everyone and kind of pointless.) He has no trouble holding it all night now and only gets up to go on the very rare occasion that he's had a lot of water in the evening.

No, most likely at 2.5 especially when they don't even know how to go potty they're not physically ready for that yet. Imo you can't really potty train when they're sleeping.

Your kid goes to daycare, right? They're not going to be on board with him not being in diapers until he shows signs of being potty trained.

I just got done reading it, and am in the middle of PT DS right now. I decided against it, because I don't have that kind of mental stability. I am so stressed PT without dealing with overnight and nap pees, I can't imagine attempting it. I think that's for people who stay home or can take a week off of work. I plan on cutting the naptime diaper out fairly quickly, though, and hope that leads to a smoother nighttime training.

I didn't because i think night training is a totally separate thing, and they might not be physiologically ready.

I'm reading the Oh Crap! Potty Training book and the author recommends tackling night and day training all at once, which is what we are planning. Essentially, we want to "throw away" LO's diapers, having him help us "throw them away" and do no diaper for day, nap, or night.

Did anyone else go this route? Any tips? Or suggestions?

(We aren't actually going to throw them away, if we are successful, I have a friend with a LO who wears the same size as LO, so I will give her the rest of his diapers.)
