@LovelyPlum: This is embarrassing but I don't know how to recognize when it's acting up unless I'm coughing. When I was doing the lung function tests they were like, "Do you not have trouble breathing all the time?" Maybe that's why my breathing sounds like I weigh 500 lbs?

@locavore_mama: yep! I'm on Singulair, and I use my albuterol inhaler when I need it. Also, when I had this head cold that turned into a chest cold/wheezing, they put me on antibiotics almost immediately to prevent the bronchitis that usually develops when I get a chest cold.

My doctor didn't even blink when I asked about the Singulair. It's Category B, but it is WAY more dangerous for my asthma to potentially get out of control, which comes with some potentially serious pregnancy complications. I found this link from the NIH really helpful: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2939110/

I hope that your appointment went well!

Hmm...I've always had asthma and brushed off my OB and MFM's questions about whether it's flaring up. But you guys are making me wonder about the shortness of breath I've been having for months. I can hear myself breathing almost all the time.

@msmug: I wasn't before pregnancy. And it's actually the only thing I got kind of ticked at my OB about because I planned on working out through my whole pregnancy (was doing Crossfit & running) when it got way too difficult to breathe. So I brought it up at my 12 week appt, they told me to do nothing more than light walking or swimming, and then at my 26 week blood draw they saw how anemic I had become and put me on a supplement. I had complained for the entire time in between, and they just kept brushing it off. So I always bring it up if someone says they're out of breath a lot because I was really disappointed I didn't get to continue my workout routine for the rest of my pregnancy. And you know the not breathing sucked, too. :)

@locavore_mama: Your symptoms sound similar to the reason I ended up in the hospital a few weeks ago. I had a cough that they think ruptured some air sacs in my lungs making it really difficult to breathe. They gave me some inhaled steroids I think to help the sacs heal/reinflate or something, but they had to do an X-ray to find that that was the cause.

If your appointment yields something fruitful today, that's great, but if it persists it might be worth following up to make sure you don't have something similar to what I had... *fingers crossed* for a non-scary easy solution!

ETA: I spent a couple hours breathing so heavily I couldn't even get more than a syllable out between breaths before I went to the hospital. It doesn't sound like you're nearly that bad, so I don't think you should be too worried....

@bananapancakes: were you anemic before you got pregnant? because I am also having shortness of breath.. I walked inside the house from the car last night while on the phone with my mom and she asked me why I was breathing so hard.. I have not had a history of anemia but this shortness of breath thing is definitely something I plan to bring up with my OB at my next appt.

@locavore_mama: Definetly do. I didn't know that shortness of breath could be a side effect and suffered until my 26 week screen. It was an relatively instant fix once I got on the supplement.

As a lifelong asthmatic, mine got better during pregnancy. I was relieved that I could use my rescue inhalers throughout pregnancy. With the inhalers, it only reaches your lungs, so it doesn't effect the baby. It was one of my first pregnancy concerns I addressed with my OB.

@BananaPancakes: so funny you should say that. I was borderline anemic during my first pregnancy and was on iron supplements during the second half. I was planning on bringing that up the OB today since LO is pretty anemic due to a genetic condition.

@locavore_mama: singulair is safe, and my OB and RE approved Advair. I have an inhaler for emergency use. It's category C and I did have to use it while pregnant with Chloe. Now that my asthma is well controlled, I haven't used it in over a year.. but I still carry it with me just in case!

@locavore_mama: No. It sounds like yours may be worse than mine though? Mine is mostly getting out of breath way more easily than usual, and then even when I'm just sitting there I have a hard time taking a good deep breath so I breath sort of shallowly. She said if I felt lightheaded when sitting down or if I felt like I was like, panting, to definitely let her know so she could look into it more.

No but I also had (have) shortness of breath issues during pregnancy. In the 1st trimester my doc hypothesized it was probably my allergies (over)reacting to my pregnancy. Then it went away for a while and came back towards the end of my 2nd trimester. At this point she says baby squishing my diaphragm. Boo.
