not a 180, but things definitely got clearer for me once she was here and we are still figuring out her personality, etc.

Totally. I thought I would be sleep training in the hospital, haha, and while I am pro-CIO, I have really struggled with it & I have been much more lenient than I thought I would be, cosleeping & so forth.

I'm sure as she gets older, examples will continue to arise!

Oh yeah. I totally thought I was in the CIO camp before I had a baby... and now that she's here I've never been able to bring myself to do it.

I think you see it a lot here. Particularly the other way, people who are pregnant who think they are going to be really into attachment parenting and then it turns out not to be that way.

Eh...plenty of time to change your mind if you want. We should revisit this thread in about 18 months... :P

@Bao: I was actually the opposite, thinking I would be totally accommodating because that's how I grew up. Now I just let him go to bed hungry and he ends up eating a ginormous breakfast the next day. Less stress for both of us.

@Bao: *sheepishly raising a hand* Uhhh...yeah. I was so firm and basically a total snob about that - "he'll eat what I give him or he doesn't eat." Says the woman who now will try anything and everything and eventually will end up feeding him puffs and applesauce for dinner just to get some food in him. Ha. Ohhhh, reality...

@T.H.O.U.: exactly. At one point you will realize (hopefully) that you may be biologically engineered to think your child is the best person EVER, but that he/she will be around other people in his/her life without that genetic predisposition and you would like that to be a pleasant experience for everyone involved, so some discipline will need to come into the picture :)

@Bao: guilty of that too!

You just don't know what kind of parent you'll be til you are a parent...and until you know what kind of child you have! Z will change a lot in the coming months and years and you will adjust. For what it's worth I am putting off ear piercing too even though where I'm from lots of people pierce girls' ears during young babyhood.

Yeah I used to say she would get what's for dinner and that's it, now if she doesn't eat I try everything under the sun to get her to eat something. Bad habit I know, but I can't put her to bed hungry.

Oh yes! For us it was co-sleeping. I always said I would be one of those parents who never bed shared and who put their kid on a schedule as early as possible. Once DS was here, I couldn't imagine not co-sleeping (and did until he was six months and he did better in his crib) and also didn't even think to force a schedule but fed on demand and as his needs changed daily.

Honestly, I think it's impossible to know what kind of parent you'll be until you're in the moment and finding your groove. :)

@T.H.O.U.: Lol I am sure we will get to that point. I'm just thinking to myself, I never want to hurt her. That is why I don't want to pierce her ears right now either. I know it only hurts for a second or whatever but still!

@anonysquire: Yup! And it still goes on. Just because you can't imagine spanking your sweet little baby now, there may be a point as a bratty kid that doesn't listen that you really want to!

I think there's a huge difference between imagining what kind of parent you'll be, and what kind of parent you are.

There's a lot of things I said I would or wouldn't do, and do the opposite of. And that's okay -- we've figured out how to do things as we go along, which isn't' something we could have fully prepared for while childless.

I'm sure eventually I will go back to normal (?) but I always said I would do certain things with my kids and now I find myself changing my mind. Like I said I would pierce my babys ears right after birth. Or I said I would have no problem spanking and grounding my kids. Ummm now I couldn't imagine doing any of that and plenty of other things. I keep telling my husband that Zuma is going to be able to get anything from me. Hahaha I know this is going to produce a Veruca Salt.
