@mediagirl: I would absolutely drive 10 miles out of the way for a DCP I felt comfortable with! 30 miles? no, but 10 isn't that bad!

Plus, you can do that for a few months and then reevaluate!

Yes! I really struggled with whether we should move R. She is in a center now that she is thriving at, loves her teachers, etc. But it is by my work and I can't take the 45 mins drive home, she is a mess now. It isn't fair to make her sit in traffic and whin and fight sleep for 45 mins. So we decided to move her to another center, 2 mins, from the house. It is $$$ more a month, but we struggled with finding one we could afford and liking the center. It is hard.

My son will go to a new camp in June and continue there for preschool in September. It is totally out of the way and I am actually paying more for less hours compared to the first place I had registered him.

I kind of had no choice, the day care was closing and the politics around the preschool are not something I wanted to be involved in, so we looked around. One option was equally out of the way but about twice as much money, this option is a little less and the environment is what sold me...when I walked in, I just KNEW this was the right fit.

It's not easy. You have to go with your gut, at least I did.

Yes. It's been awful. We got on wait lists while I was pregnant, and still have dozens of people ahead of us, even though she isn't starting until 16 months. We toured one and it was awful. I have my fingers crossed about an in home place next week that has more routine, funnels into the waldorf preschool, and a great reputation.
Have you looked into in home? I ruled them out initially, but honestly am starting to feel like her having a strong bond with one caretaker, and a more homelike environment, will work better for her than even the best centers here.

We didn't end up sending LO but in the area we were looking at (like within 15-20 miles!) I found ONE daycare I thought was developmentally appropriate and had good teachers. ONE! If lo had stayed in daycare then I would have cut down other things to afford it if I had to. The director there also was in the know about many assistance programs (although I highly doubt we qualified for any.) If I absolutely could not find a way to make it work I would probably just keep lo in the current daycare for now and then move her when I found one I actually liked. Jmo though. When looking I admit I was pretty picky.

Our city has a serious shortage of daycares. For any decent ones you have to be on a waitlist before you even think about having a child. Its stressful trying to find the right one that works. Good luck.

We struggled with a related issue and all the stress was so silly in hindsight! We ended up taking my son out of a daycare he loved and we loved and getting a nanny because of similar logistics. He went to the daycare for over 2 years and although he would tell stories about particular kids, etc he never once asked to go back. Kids adapt and their stress levels correlate to yours. Do whatever would make your life easiest on a daily basis. We spend more, but life is so much less hectic without a longer commute and complicated logistics. 4000 a year is only 75 a week and the less gas may offset the increased cost of your ideal daycare . Good luck-go with your gut!

@sorrycharlie: changing savings, retirement, etc is not an option. The drive to current daycare then to new office is still closer than the current office by 10 miles. It's just an ugly triangle of death on the map. :bummed:

@MamaMoose: I've seriously considered it, believe me. I will probably ask but am expecting to get turned down considering the changes that have occurred recently at our company. I also brought it up to my boss once before when I first started looking and the reaction was not positive.

@mediagirl: I may be totally misremembering (is that a word?) but was it you that mentioned paying double on your mortgage? Maybe some months pay a little less? Or I would probably do the one she's at in the wrong direction if she likes it there.. Cost of gas would be less than the ideal one. Idk. Tough decision! :/

@mediagirl: Ugh. Any chance of negotiating with your boss for a raise that covers the difference of the more expensive day care since their move necessitated the day care switch?

I would see if there was somewhere to cut back to pick the one you love. Unless it's like an extra $3000 a month or something equally as obscene.

@MamaMoose: She does really, really well in a structured, daycare situation. I'm not sure if a nanny share would be a good fit for us. I've considered it but also, in our area, a nanny share with 2 kids is very pricey.

1 month before we have to move our lo to the 2s room somewhere and we're still not sure what to do. This has been the hardest decision for me. I am getting a weird vibe from one place, we can't afford the state of the art place and her current daycare is 10 miles in the opposite direction of my new office (my company is moving).

My husband works 45 minutes from home so we try to limit his pick ups.

I just don't know what to do. There's just no good answer here. We're not taking out loans for daycare, I'm afraid I'd worry every day if we sent her to the super close place and her current daycare is way in the wrong direction. Sigh. Why must it be this hard?

Anyone else struggle with these types of daycare issues? Anyone drive way out of your way to send your lo to a daycare you are comfortable with?
