Feeling so bad this Thanksgiving weekend! LO has a bad diaper rash today, the worst she's ever had, and we're 8 hours away from home. We're cutting our trip short and leaving early in the morning. It's going to be the longest ride home ever!

@Foodnerd81: haha! My lo was up early today too. So stressful are these holidays. When lo was two months my mum visiting was like "where is her seat?" at a restaurant- like she had a booster already? I am like what the heck! She had a baby when I was in hs and we went no.where.ever.@Bookish: yeah what the heck is with the lack of remebering/ understanding? Oh well. Guess I have to expect it from my relatives!

It was a little rough in the beginning because I had to wake her up from her nap just to go, but she was fine later on. Now last year when she was 1? Oh, it was ROUGH!

He was too ramped up to take a nap all day, but that typically happens when we drive to visit my family. So while we were on edge about it and tried to get him to go down a few times, he actually did really well for skipping his nap. He slept through the drive home, was up for another hour, then slept fine the rest of the night.

This should be in baby books: warning, your first holiday will not be how you imagined it. Expect cranky babies, cold food, and relatives not Understanding.

I guess I had it easy in the dh's grandmother is very understanding and it was overall quiet. The only questioning I got at all was when I tried to put her down for her first nap an hour after waking up, but it was more of a disappointed, oh darn we were having fun, but mommy knows best, kind of thing. She even made a point to tell us it's obvious we are doing a good job and are confident- I laughed at the confidence thing but it was nice.

Unfortunately C decided 6:30 was a good time to wake up, and without super blackout shades we just weren't able to commvince her otherwise. She wanted all the Black Friday deals I guess.

@lawbee11: My normally "love to nap" baby refused all of her naps! I ate a few bites and got her to nap finally during the start of dinner. I was the only one able to get her to nap eventually. By the time I was able to enjoy my food, everyone was almost done with dessert and I didn't want to delay the cleanup so I just ate dessert too. I have never left a Thanksgiving party so hungry. But sleep trumped eating so I was able to get a good night's sleep, thankfully. It was definitely not the dreamy first Thanksgiving I had planned. We didn't even get a family picture.

@Bookish: So frustrating! We left early too. And it took hours of consoling at home to get her to sleep for a few hours. We should have called them all to wake them up overnight to remind them what it's like with a baby lol

I love my family dearly, but GEEEZ. I can't convince anyone I know my own baby and I know when he's hungry/tired/whatever. They decide he'll stop fussing if they talk in loud baby talk, shake toys in his face, and bounce him all around. Meanwhile, he's screaming.

@MapleMoose: @Greentea: I was about to post about how my family all seem to have forgotten what it was like to have a baby. LO was having a heck of a time trying to nap and everyone thought it was hilarious and was giving me useless pointers. I wanted to strangle them. We also got crap for leaving at 7! Um, sorry, do you want to come be up with her right now at 330? Grrrrr

@rawrasaur: yayyy! You give me hope for next year ;) glad she did so well!

We don't do thanksgiving, but this post makes me think Christmas time is going to be pretty stressful! S gets super fussy/overtired whenever we take her to anyone elses house-- or basically anywhere other than at home where there is so much going on/interesting stuff she'd rather be doing than napping. Last time I had to put S in the carseat under the table cloth and keep rocking it until she fell asleep!

So stressful. I want wine, lots of wine, and a nice warm bed, and someone to wake up with them in the middle of the night. My husband got home at 5am and went to bed, so I started out trying to keep all 3 quiet, impossible. Maddy didn't take her nap, Charlie won't let anyone hold her except for me (that's everyday though), my 11 year old was bored and made it a point to let everyone know. My husband got called back to work at 3 just as we were loading up to go to my parents. At least it was just my parents, it mostly went well. Maddy only ate a roll and a little helping of cranberries, then she peed on my Dad's chair. We left right after that!

@MamaCate: Yeah, as bad as it sounds we don't vacation with the kids!

@SleepyMonkey: Oh nooo that does sound stressful. I hope she sleeps better tonight!

Since LO became mobile it's been stressful spending time in non-baby-friendly homes. We went to a friend's Thanksgiving in their apartment and there was nowhere LO could crawl that wasn't within arm's reach of wine glasses, plates with food on them, power strips and cords, and cat paraphernalia. And he wasn't in a great mood because he wasn't able to explore without our taking things away from him or diverting him.

Not to mention SILs dog was outside barking non stop trying to get in and eat DS because she hates kids. Now I've been trying for 2 hours to put him to bed and he still won't go to sleep.

@evansjamie: @Greentea: Exactly! Even before I was a parent myself I would never wake a sleeping baby or give parents advice about how they are caring for their child. And now that I myself am a parent I still wouldn't. So irritating! I was livid at MIL especially since she saw how fussy and upset her granddaughter was and how long it took to get her to sleep.

I was getting worried, especially with the timing of our get together and the crummy sleep she got today, but she did awesome! I think we were lucky and it hit on a good week, because I swear a week or two ago she would not have soaked in all the people and love she got like she did today.

Haha. my husband and I are laying in bed completely.exhausted and I came across this post and laughed out loud! LO is cutting at least two molars and was up for 2 hours last night, only had 2 30 minute naps today and was a total fuss ball at dinner tonight. If anyone even got within 2 feet of her, she cried and whined. She is also going through a screeching phase which can silence a whole room, but I have no idea how to discourage her from doing it. She had a meltdown right before bedtime too. Yay!

Oh my gosh this post is making me feel so much better. This holiday was so stressful and I was wondering if it was just me. LO is 7 weeks old. She is not a good napper during the day but if she doesn't sleep then she (and we) get terrible sleep at night. So naps are very important and I do whatever it takes to get DD to sleep. Obviously everyone wants to hold her but when I say it's time to nap because I see her fussing and rubbing her eyes then don't argue with me or tell me I'm spoiling her. You can't spoil a 7 week old baby, she isn't capable of manipulation. And when we finally get her sleeping by taking her upstairs as far from the commotion as possible don't you dare start poking her face and waking her up MIL!! Seriously, you people are all parents. You've been in my shoes. What makes you think it's alright to act like that? DH and I ended up eating cold food by the time we got DD to sleep. And we left shortly after because MIL woke a sleeping baby who then proceeded to cry and cry. Gee, thanks. We are home now and still trying to get DD to sleep. She is beyond tired. I'm already dreading Christmas.
ETA: oh, and she had a massive blowout while there so that was fun. Thankfully I had an extra outfit in the diaper bag.

@Foodnerd81: Ha, me too. Are our LOs too young for stranger anxiety? If anyone other than me or DH talked to M for more than a minute she would just start bawling! My cousin is convinced M hates her because of it and I feel so bad! I wish she could've just been her happy, smiley self but I think the change in routine and all the people really just overwhelmed her.

It was really hot at my parents house today because we were cooking, and Hyla got so hot, not to mention overstimulated. I could barely get her to nap and she is so, so tired right now but is fighting sleep.

Yes! My dad's house is the furthest thing from being baby proofed so it's constant chasing after the 19 month old and making sure he doesn't break any if their gazillion knickknacks! And the 4 month old didn't want to sleep, so she just screamed. I had to hold her while eating and also help feed DS. Yay...
