I failed the 1 and passed the 3. To be completely
honest I screwed the pooch because I ate ramen too close to my 1 hour. I was dumb.

But in the weeks between my 1 and 3 hour (other than obsessively googling) I dipped my toe into a GD diet. I started looking at labels more with regards to carbs and sugars. I already was a pretty healthy eater but I’m a big fan of snacky foods. I wasn’t doing it to try to trick the test (I don’t even think that is possible) but more to practice what it might be like in the event I failed the 3. So event though I ultimately passed it was a good experience because I think I ended up eating better the rest of my pregnancy.

@LCTBQE: and please don't take any of this thread wrong way! I just felt so guilty when I had gd and I hate that alot of doctors do zero to explain to women that having gd has nothing to do with how you eat or what you did, anyone can have it!

@LCTBQE: just fyi your eating habits don't have any impact on your bodies ability to correctly process the drink. Either you have gd or you don't and eating well can help your numbers normally but the test is still tons of glucose for your body to process so you can't skew it. And you can also have it one pregnancy and not the next or vice versa, it all depends on how well that placenta processes insulin (and your body obviously but one placenta can work better than another)

@MrsBucky: i also was mad/sad/pissed off at having it so I totally understand your feelings. I would just enjoy your vacation and not go too crazy. Unless you're eating nothing but carbs for every meal you and baby will both be fine

@MrsBucky: I did this twice. The first time, I did nothing and passed the three-hour test. The second time, I went off sweets for a week just in case, and passed the test again, only I was also a tired grumpy mess and almost passed out while testing. It wasn't worth it. So, no GD either time, no need for a diet, I just don't handle these tests well.

@MrsBucky: right, I think it would probably be better if the entire human race ate a GD friendly diet, but with all this in mind and the fact that she didn't insist you come in NOW and didn't actually ask you to change your diet, I don't see why it's necessary to wreck your vacation with 1000 restrictions (right?) you could do what I did and try to be conscientious (omelet instead of pancakes for breakfast) but not break your back. I also had no problem with the 1-hour during my first pregnancy in 2016 and was shocked that I failed it this time. OB said it could have been an unexplainable aberration, or getting older can be a factor.

@MamaBear87: I got a 159. I did not have GD with my first, so I was genuinely surprised! I am sure it wouldn’t be so bad if I needed to do it, but the idea of it makes me so mad/ filled with dread. It feels like one more restriction on top of everything else.
@LCTBQE: I was driving when I got the call so I’m a bit confused. I did ask if I should change my diet and she said I *could* eat more similarly to if I was diagnosed but didn’t indicate I needed to. My guess is that they wouldn’t be mad if all pregnant ladies are like that anyway.

@MrsBucky: just in May I failed the 1-hour (150) and passed the 3 hour with very good numbers; I also was on PTO and didn't go in for two weeks in between. when I found out I failed the 1-hour, I asked my OB if I should alter my diet or if that would artificially suppress/mask the results of the 3-hour--she said she recommended that I *not* change my diet in between. I did cool it a bit on carbs, but I still ate them. Like, I did *not* eat half a pint of haagen daas but I did eat grilled cheese, or if we were having pasta with veggies I'd have less pasta than normal and more veggies, and make sure I had plenty of fat (butter, olive oil, cheese) so I'd get full. :goodluck: :goodluck:

@MrsBucky: did you have gd with your first? I did the 2 hour which is diagnostic so I knew I had it as soon as results came back.
Honestly it's not that bad. While waiting I would just do your best to balance carbs and protein, so if you have something really carby, like ice cream, you'll also want to have something protein heavy, nuts work well, a protein bar. And I would avoid milk and cereal and white rice and pasta

How much did you fail by?

I know this is a super old post, but I'm wondering- for those of you that failed, what did you do diet wise between getting the news you failed and getting the results that you passed? I found out today, and of course am leaving town for two weeks tomorrow, so I can't do my 3 hour for two weeks (and after vacation, helpful). I don't want to hurt my baby, but I also don't want to restrict insanely on vacation for no reason. Did you change your diet at all while waiting to find out the 3 hour results, or after passing the 3 hour? I asked on the phone this morning, and the answer was "well, you can be on the safe side by eating like you have it, which is like this..." but that sounds awful. I'm torn on what to do!

Just got off the phone with my doctor's nurse--I passed the 3-hour (even though I still look like I've been shooting up heroin 3 days after I took the GD thing (pun intended!)). Thanks for all of your well-wishes!

@lawbee11: I was asked to take my 1-hr GTT very early in the pregnancy (maybe 9/10 weeks). I think they were trying to do early intervention in case I do in fact have GD. I failed my 1-hr with a 145. But many say that the 1-hr GTT results can vary since some are not asked to fast at all. My doctor said it all depends on the last thing you ate/drink before the GTT.

At 12-weeks, I went in for my 3-hr GTT but I threw up the glucola :( the nurse who was assisting me said that I was taking the test awfully early in the pregnancy so she said some don't even feel a thing when they take the test the second time - which I would have to do.

My sister said she failed the 1-hr and passed the 3-hr. So I think you should be fine :D I'm hoping to pass mine too when I go back to take it.

Good luck!

I did. I failed my first by a lot and then passed the 3hour all within the normal range. My first test was during my regular checkup and I always drank like abnormal amounts of water on my way to the doctor's office because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do the pee sample :P I think the water messed up the results.

@Turtledoves - I completely agree with your OB! I failed the 1 hour, passed the 3 hour and was THEN told that almost 45% of women falsely fail the 1 hour. When I had my follow-up appointment, I asked our doctor when we're pregnant again if we could opt out of the 1 hour and go straight to the 3 hour because of this. He said many MANY women do just that. I asked why he doesn't recommend just the 3 hour and his response was because so many do pass it as well. Sigh.... GOOD LUCK!

I failed the one hour with a number in the 160s during my first trimester and passed the three hour with flying colors (my mom had GD). Bring something to eat at the end!!! My final number was a 33.

BUT, I failed the one hour in the second trimester and got one high number with the three hour. My final number was a 50. The doctors' office wanted me to take it again and I refused so they're treating me as GD. It's not so bad. My weight gain has basically stopped - I even lost some weight - and I can still have some frozen yogurt.
