I did it after my quad screening came back with a 1 in 35 risk of DS. It was super easy. I don't think it tells you gender though, at least if it did they didn't tell me that result.

I had it because we had a soft marker at our 18 week scan. It was very easy, blood test and we got the results in 10 days. My insurance covered some of it, we were told we will need to pay $200. I think it's amazing that such a test exists!

@spaniellove: When i got my NT scan results back, they wanted to 'wait and see'. I was like 'wtf does that mean? shouldnt we do more tests?' (downs risk was higher than normal). I kind of pushed a bit and was offered options of Amnio, CVS, or the blood test. The only concern with the blood test was whether insurance would cover. Also I guess amnio and cvs provide a lot more complete of a picture. However, the disorders tested for by the blood test are by far the most common genetic conditions babies have, others would be pretty unlikely without some sort of family history. So anyway, I chose the blood test but also made an amnio appointment 'just in case'. Test came back normal so I canceled the amnio.

I got a similar test, called the Verifi. I wish my dr. had had Maternit21, I would have rather had that one because it can tell you the gender. But our hospital only offered Verifi. It took about a week to get results. I felt a lot better having had it, enough that I decided against doing an amnio.

I did it because I had some downs markers, so it was nice to get the peace of mind. I was told it might not be covered by insurance, and sure enough it wasn't, but it was still worth it. I was told it could come back inconclusive, also. Mine came back with solid results so this was not an issue for me. Had it been inconclusive, they'd have recommended an amnio.

@spaniellove: I heard about it from a friend but am pretty sure my OB offered it and I didn't have to ask. But again that's because I was 'eligible' for it being over 35.

I didn't have any trouble getting it done because my hospital is one of the 'approved' facilities for it - but there actually aren't too many of those. I'd ask either your OB or the Maternal/Fetal Medicine Dept where you are delivering about it. Even if they don't offer it, they can probably refer you to a nearby provider who can. I think there is a similar test called Harmony that's put out by a different lab but is the same test.

I've been interested in this test...those of you who had it, did you have to ask for it? And did you have any trouble getting it done, especially since it's new?

Yes, my insurance covered it 100% so there was no downside to having it done since it's just a simple blood draw!

Thanks everyone! I called my insurance to get all the pregnancy related costs and the rep I talked to said that the test would be covered 100%. Hopefully she was right, but we'd totally pay the $250 for it anyways. DH just really wants to know if we're having a boy or a girl, lol.

I had it somewhere around 12 weeks (in October). My insurance covered some of it and we paid $250 or so out of pocket. I didn't have to do the 2nd screening because the results were good. I appreciated the peace of mind.

I did not have it, but know someone who did. She said peace of mind was worth the cost. I think similar to @hummusgirl it was around $250.

Yes I had it! I'm SO grateful to live in a world where this technology exists! I'm also over 35 so had it right at 10 weeks and by 12 weeks, we already knew the baby didn't have Down's, Turner's (I think) and whatever the other disease is they check for. We knew all of that before we even had our 12 week integrated scan (NT test) which was amazing. No downside to getting it.. we would've paid whatever was necessary, but it was covered 100% by our insurance. ETA: I'd just call your insurance and ask what it would cost - depending on what your co-pay 'schedule' is, the most you'd have to pay is $250.

Yes, my LO had two "soft markers" for Down syndrome at my 20 week ultrasound and the doc suggested amnio. I wasn't comfortable with that so we did the MaterniT21 so we could be prepared for whatever was to come. The test itself was no big deal, just a blood draw. The genetic counselor called about two weeks later with the results (negative for the three chromosomal abnormalities they test for). The only problem was the cost - they said insurance would cover most of it and we'd only owe $250 or so, but I think we ended up having to pay a lot more because our insurance didn't cover much at all since it's fairly new. It was worth it, though. I would have been fine (eventually I'm sure) with either outcome, but I the uncertainty was really rough.

I'm interested in asking my midwife next week about the MaterniT21 test at my appointment. Since I'm 35 I know the risk for down's and other chromosomal abnormalities goes up somewhat. I like that it's non-invasive (blood test as opposed to amniotic fluid) and as an added bonus they can tell you which gender you're having.

Has anyone else had this? Experiences?
