we sleep trained at 6 months and he had previously been nursing to sleep. It was so rough! But worth it and I broke so many rules to do it the way I felt comfortable!

@princessbaby: It sounds like you've got a good thing going, why mess with it?

So glad to hear everyone else's positive stories. Last night DS woke up 7 times between 9pm-6am. I am exhausted and going back to work soon. I don't want to sleep train, but I can't keep (not) sleeping like this while working.

We sleep trained at 11 months after nursing to sleep (for up to 2 hours some nights!!) and cosleeping. We moved her to her crib in her room and also put her to sleep awake. The first night was tough, and we still have some nights now at almost 13 months that are harder than others, but she is STTN now from waking up a million times a night. Her sleep has improved a million percent...seriously. I will send you the link to my blog that has more details on what actually happened at first (as I can't seem to remember!!).

We have tried a few times to 'trade down' his sleep associations (i.e. nursing to sleep). It usually takes about 3 days for it to stick and then we're good.

I decided to still nurse to sleep at bedtime because it is some of the best time that we get together. For all other night wakings, I handle them the same way. Go in, sing a song, rub back. If he is still upset after two verses I pick him up to calm him down then back in the crib, two more verses etc. Now I just have to lay him down and sing so we are getting there!

I highly recommend the book 'Solve your childs sleep problems' not for the techniques given but for the science behind why our babies wake when and how they do. Like if your baby wakes every night at 11pm to eat their metabolism will come to expect that feeding. Instead of completely dropping the feeding you would push it back by 30 minutes. So when your baby wakes at 11 you soothe until 11:30 and then feed. Basically you want to increase the amount of time inbetween feeds by 30 minutes every night.

I think as moms we sometimes underestimate how well we know our babies! If you think the baby is hungry he/she probably is! If you think they are just wanting the comfort you're probably right!

i don't think H needs to be sleep trained, but if you are thinking about it, i think you're doing the right thing, waiting until you guys are settled in your new place! with all of the changes and mental leap-- it probably wouldn't stick right now anyway!

as far as nursing to sleep, we still do at 6.5 months for night time sleep, sometimes for naps... he usually wakes up during burping and we put him down awake. sometimes he falls asleep on my boob and i put him the crib. he's been sleeping consistently 630/7-630/7 aside from a few days of 4 months sleep regression and random days here and there since 12 weeks old.

we did however use a paci for a few nights... and he started self-soothing with thumb, ever since his teeth came in tho, his A&A security blanket has been his go-to sleep aid.

We weren't successful with sleep training until the third try at 11 months of age. There were so many factors going into it, but he wasn't ready and since I was staying at home, we just continued on the road. There's no right time, and I totally get moving, different cribs, shots, etc, playing into it.

You don't seem like you have to sleep train, so why put yourselves through that?

I did not sleep train yet. I am a chicken, bottom line. Also, H is in the last week of the Fifth Leap/WW so I'm kind of trying to see if she'll go back to normal (STTN).

And she's been going to bed at 8:30, usually waking up at 930 or 10 (while I'm still awake) and then sleeping until anywhere from 630-8a. So it hasnt been awful enough to put her through it.

Plus she has shots soon. Plus we move out of state next week and she's going to be sleeping in the Baby Bjorn Travel crib (just got it so she's never slept in it before) for about 7 weeks while we sublet a furnished condo until our new house is completed.

So I just feel like it's not the right time. And I'm chicken.

@PrincessBaby: My LO is seven months, and here's what works for us: While I nursed to sleep, at the end, I would play his Fisher price soothe and glow seahorse just before I put him in his crib. I would also let the burp cloth or A&A blanket rub against his cheek. If he woke up, I would go to his room, play the seahorse and rub the burp cloth or blanket on his cheek. half the time, that's all he needed. I think he started to associate all with sleep, not just the nursing. Now about 95% of the time, I can pop him in his crib, turn on the seahorse and let him rub his cheek with his A&A blanket.

5% of the time, I'll need to nurse him again, which I only do if it is his bedtime (no nursing for night wakings), or there is no consoling him and we have to let him cry it out for a bit.

We nursed to sleep until 9 months- DD was waking every hour or two at night and had to be nursed back to sleep. I just couldn't handle it anymore. We decided to CIO, as other methods had not worked with her in the past. DH and I were on the same page and knew we had to be strong. We did the extenction method- no checks as we knew it would just make her more upset. First night was 47 minutes, second and third were about 25, and fourth night was 2 minutes of her screaming and crying. It was hard, but necessary. She still fusses/sometimes cries for about 10 minutes at night but she only wakes up once in the middle of the night now as opposed to every hour or two. I wish we hadn't had to CIO and was worried about how it would affect my daughter, but she's as good natured as always.

Actually, I hadn't thought about nursing during her wake-ups (I would nurse her if it had been over 4 hours) until T.H.O.U. mentioned that she didn't think it was fair- but luckily DD stopped waking as much in the middle of the night- so we havne't night weaned but she doesn't usually wake until 2am, and I have no problem feeding her then. If only we could get her to stop waking up at 5am for the day... Oh, and we haven't nap trained. DH is home with her during the day until July and she starts daycare then and will have to transition to one nap a day, so we are rocking her and letting her sleep as much as possible now.

I don't have experience with nursing to sleep and sleep training, but we did have to sleep train and for us, it was essential that we treated naps and nightime sleep the same. I was at home during the day and was breaking the rules for my son because i couldn't stand to hear him cry, which only confused him at night time.
I know some on the boards did night training first then tackled naps, but that was a recipe for disaster for us.

We did. I had a post on it a while ago but it only took a few days. I was nursing LO to sleep and she was waking up between 7-12 times a night depending on the night. She did take a pacifier but if I nursed her, she fell asleep for longer. I couldn't do it anymore so I moved her into her room and we sleep trained her. It only took a few nights and now she sleeps great. She does 7:15/7:30-8/9 every night. Naps were actually harder for us because I was nursing her for naps too and letting her sleep on me. But it was worth it!

We still do offer a bottle at bedtime but she goes in her crib sleepy but awake and it's the same with naps.

We nursed to sleep until she was around 13 months. But her night wake ups were only once or twice a night and I think she really wanted to nurse.

We night weaned from nursing at the same time we sleep trained. I don't think its fair to sometimes nurse in the middle of the night but other times expect them to cry themselves to sleep.

Yep. It really wasn't awful for us. I think mostly because she was just ready. I don't know how to tell you she was ready, it was mother's intuition. Also, LO has never been one to take a long time to catch onto a new skill or habit. She's usually a pro by the third day.

We started with map training because that was what was giving us the most trouble. After a bit of trial and error we figured out that checks aren't very helpful for her. So, we did our routine (diaper, white noise, lights off, song, lay down), and would give her 10 minutes before going in to her. 20 if she was winding herself down.

I still offer my son (12 months) a bottle before bed - he sometimes falls asleep, sometimes just gets sleepy and sometimes is wide awake after teh bottle. Regardless, he goes in his crib and unless he is sick, I don't get him til the morning. He never cries long or never has cried long. (I know, I know, we need to bottle wean).

I hear your pain! We just started sleep training a few days ago, and although her sleep is far from perfect, it's def headed in the right direction and we are making some real progress. We nursed to sleep until around 3 months, then we started putting her down more and more awake and she would go to sleep, but I swear the minute she turned 6 months she decided to scream anytime we would try to put her in the crib awake at night, so I just started nursing her fully to sleep until we decided to give sleep training a try bc her sleep was so bad. I initially wanted to try Ferber, but both me and my dh are such babies when it comes to hearing her cry, so we decided to start with the stay in room method from the sleep sense program that I bought. It's awesome and comes with short videos to watch each night and a booklet with all the instructions. Night 1 was the worst so far, and nights 2 and 3 have been sooo much better. We are still keeping 1 night feed if she wakes after 1:30am. I am no way ready to sleep train for naps yet, but that's only bc she goes down so easily by nursing and takes nice long naps, so I don't see the point yet- but if she starts not falling asleep nursing or taking crap naps, ill def try. Also what @hilsy85 said that babies can separate day and night sleep, so it's ok to nurse for 1 and not the other. My LO also never took a paci, so I had to nurse for every wake up as well, which only made the problem worse. Good luck, you can totally do it!!!

@PrincessBaby: we actually did nap training first...I know that's not usually recommended. I had never nursed for naps, so maybe that made it easier? I did naps by staying in the room with him while he fell asleep. It took about a week or two, but eventually I didn't have to sit with him anymore. I think it is ok to nurse for naps but not for night time if you want, as babies separate daytime and night time sleep, from what I've read. Good luck! Also, we sleep trained in an apt--our neighbors haven't complained yet :)

@hilsy85: I immediately nurse. I agree I'm part of the problem! I just took for granted that she was STTN and I never really thought nursing to sleep was bad. I dont mind nursing her 1x a night (that was the worst we had it even as a newborn!), but this is just bonkers.

Did you still nurse to sleep for naps when you were sleep training? Or did you do the whole shebang at once? I am so scared! DH is gone until june 8, so this will be 100% me, no support! But we have to do it now bc a) it's miserable, and b) we are moving to SC June 13 and have to sublet a condo until our house is finished in August. And I dont want to sleep train in a condo where we will be sharing walls- although I did think about waiting until after our move. But 6 wakeups made up my mind, lol

Yup! We nursed to sleep for almost 7 months, and then we sleep trained. The first and most important thing I think we did is to separate the nursing from sleeping--so whereas it had been the last thing in our bedtime routine, I switched it so now it looks like this: bath, nurse, read book with daddy, and then I rock him for a minute and sing to him and put him in the crib WIDE awake. I don't think drowsy was working for us.

I think I already talked about our experience, but it was really positive--LO now has no problem going to sleep on his own, for night time or for naps. He does sometimes still wake during the night when it's not time to nurse but goes back to sleep within 10 min of crying/fussing usually. The first two nights were tough, but much better than I thought it would be.

Do you let her cry/fuss at all now before you nurse her? I hadn't been letting him fuss at all, and so I think the problem was more me than him!

I have to sleep train H, but I've nursed her to sleep forever (she's almost 6 months) bc it USED to work just fine for us. She started STTN at 8 weeks, so I didnt think it was bad to nurse to sleep. She had a week or so of four month sleep regression and went back to STTN. Now for about 3 weeks, ever since she started consistently rolling in her sleep onto her belly, there have been a ton of wakeups every night. Last night I put her down at 8pm, and she had wakeups at 830, 9, 945, 1230, 230, & 5 am. Gah!

She doesnt take a paci, and the only way we've ever done things is nurse to sleep (so I'm putting her on the boob each time, bc I dont know any better either), so I'm worried it's going to be super awful on her that I'm ignoring her and letting her CIO.

If you nursed to sleep, and then sleep trained, how did you do it and how awful was it?
