@Cherrybee: wine for everybody!

I was checked on a Tuesday and 4-5cm dilated but didn't actually go into labour until Saturday despite having contractions for the best part of 3-4 days. I walked, I bounced, I pumped, I nursed and still I couldn't get myself into active labour! And did I mention that the OB said I would "fly into labour and that baby will come fast!"? SO frustrating and disheartening!

Hang in there, lady!

@Anagram: Brilliant!! To be fair, I'm sleeping quite well. The contractions have been stopping at bedtime, which is considerate, dont you think?! My sleep is only impaired by the toddler - perhaps I should give her the wine?

@Cherrybee: the good news is that I googled the wine thing, and there seemed to be something to it. So it's a good excuse to have a glass of wine tonight (I mean, just to get some sleep tonight). ;-)

Humph. I don't want a fast active stage. My first labour was precipitous once they finally got me going and I'm really scared I wont even make it to the hospital this time. I want a nice, normal labour! But you get what you get.... and this is better than last time already.

I had pretty much the exact same thing as @LindsayLou: I was convinced I wasn't going into labor the day that I did because I had nothing at all going on, my poor husband was out with friends and I told him to go ahead and stay out late. An hour after he got home I went into labor and delivered 6.5 hours later.

My best friend though started Thursday morning with losing her mucous plug and was not dialated at all. She had contractions all day that weren't forming a pattern. The pattern from formed late that night but she was still barely dialated at 1 when she went in. He was eventually born around dinner time the next day.

@Cherrybee: I had a week of prodromal labor. I had an OB appointment and I was already 3 cm dilated. I thought it couldn't be long till I went into labor...it was a week. Exactly a week later, I complained to my OB that I was having contractions on and off, all day and night and not sleeping because of it--the no sleep thing was way more exhausting than I can transmit here in type. The doctor suggested I go home and drink a glass of wine to "relax my uterus". Instead, I went directly to a women's wellness center and got an induction massage--during the massage, my contractions were so intense, I had to get up from the table midway to breathe and walk around (I thought I was in real, serious labor at that point). Then they went away AGAIN.

The next morning I went to work....and well, when the contractions started up again, I kind of ignored them thinking it was more of the same. Luckily, my husband talked me into heading home before they got super painful, because then I had a super quick labor.

So, your body is just doing some of the early work for you now. It probably means once your labor is really in motion, it will be very fast again. Make sure your bags are packed and ready to go!

No, the longest part of my labor was pushing!
I started having my first contractions in the afternoon and was definitely in full on labor by about midnight.

yes, mine was five days and during those days, multiple times, my contractions went to 3 min apart I was about to leave for the hospital but then a shower, laying down, etc would slow them down again. It was SO frustrating. I finally went to the hospital when they were at 3 min apart in the middle of the night, but I still wish I would have waited because things majorly slowed down at the hospital again and I need intervention (dr. breaking my water, pitocin, etc) to kick start labor.

I SO understand what you are feeling like - contractions are usually too intense to live normally (go out to eat, go to a park, etc) but mentally it drives you crazy! I hope it's very short-lived and real labor comes on soon!

I had frequent Braxton hicks from about 28 weeks on. Often timeable, sometimes painful. The week before I went into labor, they kicked up to painful, often enough so to make me stop and breathe through them. They actually mellowed out the day before I went into actual labor.

At my 38 week appointment i was having regular contractions and was 3 cm dilated. My ob did a sweep snd said should be in the next 24 hours so I took the next day off work (I was teaching 1st grade) and course nothing. Each day I'd show up at work and everyone would say why are here. For a week I had on and off contractions. At my 39 week appt she did another sweep she said d he eouldnt be surprised to see me that night. Nothing but on and off contractions so I went to work the next day. That day I had pretty strong contractions all day but nothing I couldn't handle. 2 am the next morning woke up k nj owing this was it. Super fast labor. Our parking stub says 3:51 and she was born at 4:53.

With LO2, I had 3 weeks of occasionally time-able contractions, intense enough to make me pay attention but not so intense that I would actually describe them as painful. When the baby actually came, I had 2 hours of somewhat mild contractions (I couldn't sleep through them but so I got up and did the dishes) about 5 minutes apart before I decided I should call the midwife. They had me go to the hospital right away, I was fully dilated as soon as I got in the room, and I had the baby 5 minutes after they broke my water.

I loved my labor! I'm guessing that the early labor pains did a lot of the work for me, and I ended up only having maybe 15-20 minutes of really painful labor. And it didn't feel rushed at all; the midwife just asked me when I was ready to have the baby and then broke my water to move us forward.

Early labor started Friday night, and my daughter was born Sunday afternoon. I did a lot of walking and moving around Saturday which seemed to speed things up and by Saturday night I had timetable contractions 5 minutes apart for an hour.

With C my early labor was long- but like, 12-15 hours long, not days. My friend had a similar experience with her second, a few weeks ago. She had contractions that would start then crap our for almost a week. It was really hard physically and mentally! But once the real deal started it went fast. With her first she pushed for several hours, this time the hospital had tried to send her home, she resisted and by the time they checked her again she was in transition, only pushed for a few minutes.
Good luck! You are so close to meeting your new baby girl!!

I'm not sure If this is the same thing , but I went into the hospital with pretty intense contractions but was only 2 cm. contractions kept
Getting more intense but no progress on dilation. The OB decided that my body needed to rest and we did a "morphine sleep", where I slept for like 1.5 hours with one dose, and when I woke up labor started. The thought was that my body was too tense and this allowed dilation to progress. I know you said you've been able to sleep though !

Oh, the irony! While it took a week to induce me last time, my actual labour, from first contraction to 10cm, was rapid (90mins) and brutal. This time, I was hoping for a spontaneous and dare I say longer labour.....?! :silly: Well, guess what I got?

I lost my plug Friday, cramps (like really intense diarrhoea cramps) started 3pm Saturday and have been coming and going ever since! Its now Tuesday morning! At my doctor's appointment yesterday, she said I was 2cm dilated and my cervix was really thin and anterior. She gave me a sweep and it kick started actual timeable contractions that got to 5mins apart, but then they petered out again overnight. Gah!

Did anyone else have a long latent phase? How long? Did you try to relax or stay active to move it along?
