Mine failed me after only 3 hours. I pressed the button for more meds and they told me to wait it out another 45 minutes to see if that would help and if it didn't they'd call for another one. By the the time they came to give me another one it was too late and they were calling my dr in so I ended up spending more of my labor (including pushing) without the epi than with.

These stories just reinforce my decision to always try to avoid the epidural... pain is nothing to be scared of in comparison to some of what you guys went through!

I had two Tina! The first one failed and I started to feel the contractions at about 3cm... But thankfully the second one worked and lasted till the end. I did have two boosters tho.

@boogs - that's horrible! that's one of my fears of having c-section done. i'm so scared it's going to be like the horror movies and someone's cutting my stomach open and i could feel it and not do anything about it!

@hreichard - that's horrible too! that's my fear of getting an epidural - that something crazy like that will happen. but i know i'll need one since i'm not very good with managing pain.

My epidural didnt fail, but I had complications where they hit something they werent supposed to, i got too much medication and i stopped breathing on the operating table. Then to top it off, 3 days later i started getting these horrible headaches where i couldnt sit up in bed or i would start vomiting. I went to the OBGYN, they sent me to the ER and here i had a spinal headache. It was caused from them hitting a spot in my spine with the needle and my fluid from around my brain was leaking out of my spine the doctor said. They said i could have became paralyzed from that. VERY SCARY!

@Nodakamedic I never though about asking my doctor about it. I figured it was one of those risks when taking an epi. You should of seen my bruise after they took it out. It look like a spider. My friend ( a nurse) never saw that before.

@blushink - is there anything they can do about your sharp pain? A relative of Mr. N's described something similar (plus headache) after her son's birth, and they were able to do some minor surgery to correct it. I guess they'd nicked a nerve or something.

I had one, and at the end (when it was time to push) i started to feel again. Not full out if I hadn't taken any. That's why it's important to wait as long as you can (without missing on the opportunity to get it)

My friend is a nurse and suggested I wait until i was 5cm dilated. My doctor wanted to give it to me at the beginning when I was at 3cm. I refused. Imagine if I had taken it, I would of had no more epi when it came time to push.

My back still hurts from the epidural though. A sharp pain (not all the time) but it's really annoying. So I'm not sure I will opt for it come baby #2 . I say that and Im a weakling so I might cave and ask for it again.

I had 2. Both failed. I however didn't feel them because I was just in too much pain. They warned me it might not work since I'm allergic to aesthetics and I had to have a specialist come and watch me after it was given.

Yup, I had two. It especially sucked because it failed me during my c-section.

I had a total of 3 epidurals because the first two failed! Yes, I had to sit up and bend over and get stuck 3 times, not to mention all the times they tried to adjust it because it wasn't working anymore. Now I'm terrified of the next delivery and will probably hire a doula even though I would never go in not expecting an epidural. I always expected that I would be a wimp in terms of managing the pain, but I never expected 3 epidural failures. I met every single anesthesiologist and had 6 in my room at once towards the end as the attending placed my third and final epidural.
