I had frequent pre-migraines (?) while pregnant. I would get the aurora and nausea with a mild headache but not the full on migraine. I got migraines when in puberty so I could appreciate what I was missing by not having the full blown thing. I got them every time I saw a bright light. If someone tried to take my picture with a flash I lost my f'in marbles. Good times.

@spaniellove: After about a week, I tried to get an appointment with a Neuro, and that took some time. That was about 3 weeks in . . . after I saw him, I held on to the prescription for Fioricet for a few days before I finally took one (in combination with Benadryl). I was so miserable that I felt like it was safer for me to take the meds than for me to not take the meds. In the end, I kick myself for waiting a few days before starting the meds!

I had killer migraines towards the end of my 1st trimester & the start of my 2nd. I had them almost everyday for 2 weeks & refused to take any medication for it other than Tylenol, a diet Pepsi & dark room. I ended up seeing a chiropractor & she has done wonders for my headaches/migraines with Adjustments & cold laser treatment. Cold laser is like acupuncture w/o the needles. You don't feel a damn thing but it works! I've been migraine free for 10 weeks now.

@spaniellove: no I had never tried it before, though I had thought about it before. My midwives were totally on board with trying it. I just told the acupuncturist that I was pregnant and she avoided certain spots- she told me to come back if I went past my due date and she would do those spots to help start labor :)

@MrsF: Thank you so much for the reminder - a long time ago I thought of making a plan for postpartum but forgot. Judging from how I've felt every time my hormones dipped (they've been all over the place in first tri) I'll definitely need this and will probably increase my meds dosage along with adding some pain meds to avoid the ER.

@Foodnerd81: Had you been doing acupuncture before you got pregnant? Were you comfortable doing it while you were pregnant? These are such dumb questions I know. I've heard so many recs to try it during fertility treatments but this is the first time I've seriously considered it because I want to avoid more meds!

Mine got much worse during the first trimester- it sucked! But it does sound like yours are even worse, I'm sorry. What helped me a lot was acupuncture- I went for several sessions and they went away until two months pp. it's also possible it was that I got into the second tri, but I believe it was the acupuncture.

Good luck. It's pretty brutal.

I know at least one bee who got them worse. Mine got better, but when they happened they were the worst I'd had in a long time.

Same as pp's - I had increased migraines during the first trimester and a great improvement second and third trimesters.

Just a heads up (migraine humor, no?) I had a really rough time with migraines in the first few weeks after M was born. Between the no sleep and the hormonal changes I was in a bad place. I wish I had been more proactive and worked with my neurologist before I delivered to have a postpartum plan and updated prescriptions ready. I was not a happy camper in the neuro waiting room with a 3 week old baby.

Wishing you a happy, healthy and migraine-free rest of your pregnancy!

@MsLipGloss: Your 5-week migraine scares me! Did you try to tough it out or were you taking something the whole time?

I have super bad headaches but only during the first trimester. I just try to rest when I can and drink a lot of water along with taking Tylenol sparingly.

Yes, me. I had a migraine that lasted five weeks. I took a combination of Fioricet and Benadryl that eventually helped. But it was a rough five weeks, that's for sure!

ETA: Fwiw, mine lasted from weeks 16-21.

I had an increase in migraines in the first tri (to the point where I had a migraine for 5 days). I think the increase was due to all of the hormone levels in my body and once the hormone spike leveled off a bit, my migraines cleared up. I haven't had one since and I usually get migraines monthly.

This wasn't supposed to happen! I mean, if I had a nickel for every time someone winked and said that a lot of women have their migraines go away when they get pregnant. I'm even still taking my Topamax despite all the risks and going to an MFM because of it.

My migraines used to be really well controlled, and now I have them at least once a week if not twice, and nothing makes them go away. If it wasn't a risk to the baby I'd ask my neuro if I could up my Topamax dose. What the heck?! Did this happen to anyone else?
