I have tried literally everything with my son in terms of sleep, if I thought it would work, yes I would put him on a floor mattress before one year of age. We ended up ditching the crib at a year and half at my son's insistence, which was not in my plan, but ended up working out.

I hear you. I fell asleep on that couch holding him many times. It was exhausting. In my experience, CIO didn't work until he was ready. It was trial and error. I know it doesn't help right now, but he will someday sleep on his own

@macintosh: thanks for this. I'm trying my best to put him back in but he needs to be in a deep sleep so he won't freak out, which means I sit rocking him or holding him for a good 30 minutes. If I wasn't so tired I wouldn't care...I've also fallen asleep in the rocker with him. I did try CIO twice (each time for a week) and he cried for hours :crying: just going to keep persevering.

I'm not sure if you're interested in trying the crib again, but my DS only started STTN in his crib at 9 months. Before then I had to hold him til he fell asleep, transfer to the crib, then when he woke at night I brought him in my bed.

When he started waking too frequently in my bed, I started taking him on the couch in the MOTN to put him back to sleep, the back in his crib.

When he got too squirmy to fall asleep in my arms he had to CIO a little (maybe one night for 20 minutes). Then he learned how to put himself to sleep, thank goodness.

@Truth Bombs: it's not a flimsy futon mattress. It was really expensive and is rarely upright. I had to figure out my best option. I'm worried Dh will roll onto him in our bed. He won't stay down in the crib and I don't know how to make him feel safe. We've been cosleeping on the futon since about 5 months :(

We switched at 14 months. She's in a twin with rails. It hasn't been a problem.

@babycanuck: I would not put him on a futon mattress at not even a year old. The mattress is not firm enough to be safe from a SIDS perspective.

@MrsSRS: cool. We've been using the futon in the guest room for this reason. I lay him next to the wall and I sleep on the end. My biggest issue is DH doesn't want me to take the crib apart because he thinks it will help him learn to stand. I'm trying (tonight) this "nest" thing I read on here during the postathon to see if that helps him with sleep. I'm just so exhausted!!

I moved the queen mattress out of our guest room to the nursery, but only because I end up sleeping there a lot and DD moves around a lot. If it had been DS I would have used the crib mattress.

@babycanuck: We put her on a twin size mattress because she likes to put her lovies in the bed and I figured she would need some room for them.... I would probably start with a larger size than a crib mattress so LO doesn't roll off as easily.

My DD has a floor bed and she loves it- I put her in right before she turned 2 and I wish I had done it earlier. She is so much happier out of the crib, and since she is 99th % tall I don't have to worry about her jumping out. As long as the room is babyproofed/ gated I think you should be fine.

My daughter had been sleeping in a twin floor mattress since 5 months. We went from cosleeping to this so I could nurse laying down while she was still breastfed and we could cosleep in her room with her as needed. Now at age 1 she sometimes goes through phases of not wanting to stay in her bed when we put her down, so she'll end up falling asleep on the floor and we have to move her back to the bed once she's asleep. That's been the only drawback.

Following this... we have a "mini" crib which we bought before we knew LO would be 90th percentile... oops :-/ and it's a small room and it can't really be re-designed. Only solutions I see is floor bed or putting a railing on the twin bed in there.

I moved DD at one to a floor bed. She wants to nurse to sleep and she hates her crib and I want her to stop cosleeping in my bed. Now at least if we cosleep I can be in her room and not worried about her rolling off my bed.

I'm just trying to see if anyone did, when and their reasons. I'm debating turning the crib into a toddler bed or putting our futon mattress on his floor. I find he sleeps much better on the futon or our bed than he does in the crib.

Note - he rolls but doesn't crawl or pull to stand yet (9m)
