We have a jumper that I would be happy to 'sell' you for the cost of shipping. It was absolutely not worth the money we paid for it - she rarely used it. I would not consider them required, at all.

DS had a jumperoo and loved it. I gave it to my brother for his daughter, and she loved it too, and they'll be giving it back for the next kid.

@Mrs Green Grass: I wish we hadn't bought the rock n play. everyone told us we needed one and it turns out, LO hated sleeping with her feet bunched up. She prefers a flat surface to sleep, or else will nap in the swing... it's amazing how every baby differs. Another thing is the bouncer chair. I swear EVERY mom told us to get that thing, and she screams every time we put her in it, even when she was 2 weeks old.

@LazyLightning: we actually got one because dh wanted it and I was ok with 10 minutes or less. It can cause issues with ankles and with core muscle development and I'm sure all issues are worse with prolonged use. We stopped using it completely last month because of some developmental concerns we have (not from using it, but that could be worsened by using it).

Bumbo has its own issues, but we've used it a few times. The other devices I personally think are fine as long as there is lots of floor time too.

All in all, I think less is more and you can always buy things later! We got the most use out of the rock n play when he was little and an infant to toddler rocker that we still use (at 7 months).

@Mrs Green Grass: it sucks because they love to stand up and 'jump' so much! But it makes sense that this could cause issues in their natural development too. Meanwhile my arms are sore from holding her up all the time because she hates to just lie around, haha.

@pregnantbee: @Mrs Green Grass: I feel like if they don't spend too much time in it it should be OK? but I also am not a PT/OT or any kind of medical professional. Then again, if you look at all the time a lot of LOs spend in 'devices' that constrict movement -- swing, rock n play, bumbo chair, etc... can't be good right? Deciding what to do and not do is HARD!

We had the jumperoo. It was probably the best thing we bought! It was her favorite toy from about 4.5 months on. @shopaholic: is right - as a SAHM, it gave me the much needed break to eat, clean, cook, etc. I did limit her time to about 10 - 15 minutes a day.

@shopaholic: hehe I was totally set against all this bright colored light up crap. But my daughter L O V E S her activity playmat with the lightup stuff on it and to see her have fun is worth the thing taking up space in my house now! And like you said, I can lay her in that thing, and go eat a meal or do the laundry or whatever, and she's totally fine.

@Mrsbells: I think I might wait and see if she likes it at daycare too - I know they have one. It's such a big thing to get and have sitting in your living room if they don't use it much, you know?

I was very set against all those things, but we got a hand-me-down exersaucer and tested out a jumperoo. She LOVES the jumperoo! I think for me, being a SAHM, having one or the other (jumperoo, preferably) is a must. It's allowed me to be able to sit and eat a meal with 2 hands (and type on HB!).

We got an exersaucer as a hand me down. It's definitely good to have LO occupied in one while I do stuff. It's not a necessity, but it came in handy when he played in it often.

We don't have any of that stuff because our LO had hip dysplasia and our surgeon advises against them. A is crazy active too so we bought a large playpen that contains her and keeps her safe but she can have fun in. I was kind of sad to miss out on buying her fun things like jumpers but honestly, it made no difference to A, she has a ton of fun without them.

@MrsHotDog: Yeah I'm a little paranoid about that, but I figure if I don't put her in it all the time, it'll be OK. She REALLY loves to 'stand' (supported), so I think something like this would be fun for her sometimes.

@locavore_mama: I'm hoping to find one at a garage sale too!

@hilsy85: I actually didn't know there was a difference (aside from brand) between jumperoo & exersaucer! I have to do some research clearly ;)

@oliviaoblivia: Of the adjectives to describe my baby, 'chill' isn't one of them hahaha.

M has a jumperoo and we could have lived without it. I bought it new instead of borrowing it from a friend (why did I do that, again?) and she never loved it. It was fun for a few weeks but then she figured out how to crawl and something stationary was NOT going to cut it.

We did not buy a jumperoo or exersaucer but used the doorway jumper a lot between 5 and 8 months.
Instead of the big gear, we just placed her activity bar/gym thing (http://www.infantino.com/product.cfm?product_id=1427) in front of her so she had toys to play with while jumping/twirling/hanging out. Seemed to work great and took up WAY less space.

I didn't think we would want one, but once LO hit about 5 months it was clear that she would like it and it would help. She wants to be up and doing things most of the time and she pitched a fit if I put her in her seat or p n' p when I have to do something. I keep it in the kitchen and she's only in it for a little bit but it's been very helpful. And she loves it.
