@chopsuey119: Nice! Much better than $15k! With my son, we paid around $3k out of pocket but that's cause our insurance wasn't that great. We've switched insurance companies so now we only have to pay around $800-$1000 total.

I only paid $10 for LO and will pay $10 for this baby (I have really nice insurance). However, I will say that I have several friends who had to pay out of pocket and their advice is to scrutinize the bill before paying. One lady was charged for a senior anesthesiologist (who she never saw) plus a junior anesthesiologist who actually placed her epidural; she fought the charge and it was taken off her bill-if I recall it was around $2K just for that person.

Okay I have an update! Called our hospital and they offer 40% off if we pay within 90 days! :)
But! turns out we're getting insurance! Our out of pocket should only be about 3-5k. Phew!

I got so lucky! I switched to my husbands insurance when we got married, and he had 100% coverage. We paid one $10 copay for the first visit and that was it. Hospital stay was covered 100% too.

I cringe at what the bill will be if we get pregnant unexpectedly with #2. It's not in our plans, but I worry all the same.

oh you poor dear... and that is an expensive vaginal delivery!!
The hospital charged around 8k to our insurance, and we had to pay nearly 2k out of pocket. We have a maximum out of pocket too.

If we had to pay completely out of pocket, I don't think we would have had a child for a very long time. There is no way we could have afforded that.

We did, but we're living in Mexico. For a c-section it was 4500 USD, a natural birth would have been 3000 USD- at the best private hospital. Obviously at a public hospital it would have been much much less.

I called last October looking into our maternity coverage because we wanted to know what to expect out of pocket. The news was great...one $20 copay for the first appointment where they confirm the pregnancy via bloodtest. Everything else, including prenatal care and hospital stay, was covered from that point on.

Found out I was pregnant Dec. 4, first prenatal appointment was January 5. Got billed. Confused I called my insurance company...thanks to a change in our union agreement at my husband's work our insurance went from over the moon excellent to still really, really, really good so I can't complain but still costs us more than it used to. Now, we have a copay for every appointment, $200 deductible, and 90% coverage up to $1000 then they pay 100%.

All in all, this baby will cost us around $1500.

I honestly never realized how expensive it can be and that even those with insurance won't be covered. I think my own insurance (government job) made me naive about this.

I had maternity coverage, but I just received my health insurance statement, and the hospital charged my insurance $34,000 for my c-section delivery. Crazy. I'd be terrified of what I would owe if we didn't have insurance, even though I'm sure there would be a considerable deduction.

I paid my deductible of $2500. And my maternity coverage was an extra $200/month, so we really paid another $2000 for that.

We just have to meet our deductible, the fees for my OBGYN office/delivery (no c-section) is $2900 plus hospital fees, however we haven't had to pay that much out of pocket due to our insurance. The doctor's office also allows us to make monthly payments, so it doesn't seem so bad!

I did with my first. Ask if you can pay cash in advance- that's how I got my hospital stay for only $2,000. I forget how much I paid for everything now, honestly. The epidural was $700 or $900, the prenatal care/OB was $2,900. Lab work was around $2,000 including ultrasounds. Then there were little incidentals that added up, and it was our first kid so we bought a lot of stuff for her. I think it was around $10-11,000 total in the end. Like I said, there are a lot of cash discounts if you agree to pay cash and especially in advance.

This time we have AMAZING insurance, which is good because there is no way we could afford it this time around if it was going to cost us ten grand.

So far, our expected fees will be a total of 250 SEK ($35) and that's for DH staying the night (which includes a bed and breakfast). They couldn't promise him staying in the same room though, in case they're horribly swamped that day. I'm not sure if it's for 1 night or 2 nights.

@Nskillet: no, it's not that easy. Wish it was. The process for DH to sponsor me took almost two years. I used to joke that I'd have a Canadian baby before I was a Canadian, I got my BFP and that same day I got notice that I had been approved as a resident.

For our son, we were living abroad and insurance didn't cover anything. But I think fees are cheaper there than in the states. We paid about 11k for prenatal care + delivery with 2 nights in a private room. With our second, the insurance covered everything after our 3.5k deductible.

I checked my coverage beforehand, and it looked like everything would be 100% covered... BUT, then I got a letter from my insurance company that $8,000 of my $19k hospital bill was denied. I don't really know what that's all about, but I'm not going to start asking any questions until I actually receive a bill from the hospital. So far, no bill. I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm not very hopeful.
