We put DD in her crib from the moment she came home from the hospital because that's what made the most sense for us. Our apartment was not that big and her crib was set up in our bedroom, only a few feet from my side of the bed, so it was no different than if she was in a bassinet. I was able to see her through the crib slats at night and nighttime nursing/feeding was easy since I only needed to stumble a few feet from bed. She had trouble falling asleep from 2-6 weeks but now much prefers her bed than anyplace else. She hates stroller and car seat naps, though if she is tired enough she will eventually cry herself to sleep in either. I guess you win some you lose some. She may be tough when we go out but I can usually count on decent sleep if we are home.

We were going to have him sleep in his crib from the beginning, but decided at the last minute that it might be easier to have him in a bassinet in our room, so (at 2 months) he sleeps in the bassinet next to my side of the bed. I like that I can peek over the side of the bassinet during the night and see how he's doing. And in the morning, when he wakes up at 7 and I don't want to wake up yet, sometimes I can reach over and put his pacifier in (a few times) and he'll fall asleep again and give me an extra hour of sleep.

@hilsy85: We change the baby in our room overnight (I should say, my husband does). We lay out a bath towel on our bed and take a few diapers and the box of wipes into our room before we go to bed. Anything to make our lives easier at 5 or 6am!

We put C in the crib at 2.5 weeks old. She slept in her Snugabunny bouncer for the first 2 weeks. At 2 weeks old, we started getting a 6ish hour stretch at night, so I figured why not.

I'm SO glad we did. I very seriously believe that we all sleep better with her in her room and us in ours.

Question: for those of you whose LOs are in your room, do you change them in there too? That was one of the big reasons we moved him out as well--we change him in his room, so I was getting out of bed and leaving the room anyway. (sorry to threadjack!)

@PrincessBaby: hahaha I did the same thing!

I was certain DS would sleep in his crib from day one but when he came home so small and with breastfeeding, it was just easier to have him sleep next to me in his Rock N Play. I slept on my stomach with one hand on his throughout the night. When he got bigger he would sleep next to me, he was nursing throughout the night. And around 4 months he did half the night in the crib and half the night in bed with me. We both just got more sleep that way. Around 9 months he started sleeping in his crib through the night and doesn't want to lay in bed with me at all, haha.. I miss those cosleeping nights now! and I NEVER thought I'd say that.

she's currently in the co-sleeper in bed with us and we all sleep better. she is 2.5 months and sleeps 8 hours, I sleep much better knowing I can easily see if she's okay. she also seems to have night terrors (as bizarre as that sounds) and it's much, much easier and faster to soothe her when I'm already next to her.

makes breastfeeding easier, too. we have a really awkward room though so there's nowhere safe for a pack and play because every wall has a baseboard heater...so it's going to have to go in the middle of the room when she's big enough for it.

I'd like to try the AAP 6 months thing, but at least a couple more. I'm just not ready!

We started our LO in a crib half way through night one. We had planned on keeping him in our room in the pack n play, but OMG babies make soooooo much noise when they sleep. If I was going to get any sleep, I knew immediately, I needed to get him out of our room, into his nursery in the crib, and just use the monitor (which I eventually turned the sound off of - could hear him through the wall - crazy post-partum mommy-hearing!)

Ours has been in his crib since the day we brought him home. Our townhouse is set up so that our two bedrooms are on the same floor and there's a tiny hallway that connects them, so I didn't feel far away from the nursery. It honestly wasn't a pain getting up in the middle of the night and I was fine watching him on the monitor. We had room in our bedroom to set up the pack n play but we decided to keep it on the first floor in our house for an extra changing station. Very happy that we did things this way - LO is a great sleeper and is very good at putting himself back to sleep if he wakes up during the night.

We did daytime naps in the crib and nighttime in the cosleeper next to our bed. At around 8wks we put DD down for a nap around 5pm and she slept for 8 or 10hrs straight. After that it was crib only.

Our plan is to put him in his crib from day 1, our room is pretty small (we have an older home, all the bedrooms are pretty small). The crib, in the nursery, is maybe 10 steps from our bed. All the bedrooms are down the same hallway so I see no point in jamming a pack 'n play or bassinet into our small bedroom, when he's only 10 steps away. I think it'd be hard to nurse laying down anyway, so I'd have to get up regardless, at least that's my inexperienced FTM thought process ;)

I don't plan to put a bed in his room but if things are pretty rough the first few weeks, my plan B is to have him in a rock 'n play or pack 'n play in the living room and just snooze on the couch. We have two dogs though, so I just really feel like he's going to be safest in the crib, away from their curious, cold, wet noses! They're sweet dogs, very good with kids and adults, but I don't want them to have access to LO while I'm asleep (which is my fear with a rock 'n play or pack 'n play in the living room).

@sslm: a lot went right. We are very bonded and have a very special relationship. She's a terrible sleeper, though, sleeps mostly in our bed, and has a really hard time when mama is not right next to her :).

It's a blessing in many ways, but can take it's toll when you want a few minutes alone!

@daniellemybelle: I just checked on the Healthychildren.org site (by AAP) and they said the safest place for the baby to sleep is in your room in a crib, play yard or bassinet with a flat, well fitting, firm mattress with nothing inside. It looks like as long as your play yard isn't recalled, the mattress is safe for sleeping.

@JerricaBenton: @JerricaBenton: I still am not sure if a Pack n' Play bassinet mattress meets the same safety criteria that a crib mattress does? I might be overly paranoid but that would give me pause...

@JerricaBenton: Yeah, I think so -- it's just like a bassinet. What I've heard about the rock n play is that it forces the baby into a chin-tucked position, which can cause SIDS (not that rock n plays are linked to SIDS, but it's a loose correlation). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I think I read that on another board, though. We plan to use the rock n play for living room naps and stuff.

LO has slept in the crib since day 1. She made so much noise while sleeping and when you're hyper alert for any sound, it makes sleeping super difficult. We did have a video monitor, but believe me--you will hear LO loud and clear when he/she wakes up! I definitely slept better in my own bed w/o the baby, plus I didn't have to worry about my husband or dog waking the baby up. Plus LO didn't have to hear us snoring :)

No clue what we're going to do. We have a rock n play, but I'm not keen on the baby sleeping in there all night -- it doesn't seem as safe as the "flat" sleeping options of a crib, pack n play, etc. We have a pack n play but honestly, while our bedroom is a decent size, there's no good place for it except the foot of the bed, and I'm afraid (irrationally so, probably) of the dog knocking it over or something. The nursery is right across the hall, we don't have a huge house or anything, so the plan right now is crib from the start, and we'll see how I feel about it once we start. I know AAP recommendations are baby in the room with parents for 6 months, but I just don't know if we can do that.

From everything I have read, the crib is the safest sleeping environment for an infant. There are certain bassinets that are as safe as cribs based on the regulations, but they are a lot more expensive than a Rock & Play. I'm pretty sure we'll use the crib from day one when we have a LO, and just keep it in our room. It's also recommended that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for the first six months, so we'll try to do that.

I had considered doing straight to crib bc several peeps told me they did it & their babies always slept great- never had to transition, etc. But now that she's here and so tiny and sweet, I need to have her near me until she's a little bigger and I'm more confident in my parenting abilities meeting her needs. We have a bassinet but she is NOT a fan, and she ends up sleeping in her Snugabunny swing at night, right next to me, with one of my eyeballs open & on her all night. I do random checks to make sure she is breathing:). I know I could see her breathing on the Motorola if she was in the crib, but I love the immediate gratification of touching her or poking her gently and knowing she's ok!
