His bedroom was down a flight of stairs and having to get up and feed him and then walk back up woke me up way too much. DS also didn't like to sleep on his own. So I kept trying, but a lot of the time I'd put him down and he'd wake up 2 minutes later. Everyone sleeps better because we don't hear every little squeak and movement. I think it also teaches DD that "this is where I sleep" right from the start. </p> <p>Lastly, I'm a believer that despite the fact that we are now parents, DH and I still need to make time for our relationship with each other. She slept in her crib from the very first night at home. (Our house is small and her room is right across the hall--if both bedroom doors are open, my husband can see her crib from his side of the bed!)</p> <p>It wasn't always easy, but it worked best for us. She was in our room, in a pack and play, until about 6 months old.</p> <p>ETA: we moved her when she was too big for the top part of the pnp. She slept in the newborn holder, then in the top part, so I didn't have to lean all the way. It would be more of a pain reaching deep into the crib to get baby out than to go into the next room.<br /> Rnp - just never needed it with my first, he slept well in a crib, and the second didn't like the ones we tried. We don't own one.<br /> Co-sleeper - probably would have tried this but we didn't own or borrow one.<br /> Bassinet - we borrowed one but there was nothing special about it and my first rolled over while swaddled when he was a few days old and got his face mooshed into the side. Neither of us would have slept well if we'd tried to co-sleep. We had borrowed a bassinet from my sister and that was in our room but it felt very temporary and we didn't see any reason not to get the baby into their own room and their own crib. I think the flat surface to flat surface helped. We also transitioned him to the crib while he was still swaddled and well before the 4mo regression (around 9 weeks if I recall correctly). Not having to get out of bed to feed the baby was invaluable to me. Granted both girls were very sleepy and were both quiet newborns, if we had had a grunter I would have moved them earlier. With my first, he came home after 8 days in the Nicu and we put him in his own room in his crib with the blessing of his nicu doctors and nurses. They weren't concerned about it at all, so I wasn't either. The nursery is right next to our room, and we all sleep better with our own space. We did the same with our second, and never had any issues. We don't even need a monitor because the rooms are so close. </p> <p>I think if the nursery was on a separate floor from my room I would put a pack and play in our room for the first few weeks, for convenience more than anything. But otherwise I just don't think it is necessary. We just did it because we are cheap and saw no need to buy multiple sleeping places and decorate an entire nursery with stuff she wouldn't be using for 6 months, and we knew she'd be in our room at first. </p> <p>The changing pad and diapers/wipes/creams station was in our bedroom, too. They put the crib beside their bed though and I plan on doing the same. A friend offered her bassinet to me for the first little while, but I think I will just stick with the crib for less transitions. </p>
