We started cloth diapering at 6 months. Partially because of the "trend" but also to try to save money.

We started with a few to try out and were willing to try knowing that we could sell back used typically for 75-85% of the original cost. If we spent $100 and got back $80, I was willing to loose that $20 to try it out.

Also, our daycare accepted them so that was a big plus. Our life saver was when we found the flushable liners (which we just throw out). It catches all of the poo so I never really have to do anything with the toilet. The worst is the ammonia smell after sitting a day.

The worst part right now has been figuring out not how to handle the extra laundry but how to actually get a good wash. The special detergents, the pre-wash, extra rinse, the stripping, etc are all daunting.

Lastly, we have had some issues with a diaper rash which she never had from 0-6 months in disposables. Now we also have been on antibiotics and started solids but it also could be a cloth diaper issue. We are still trying to determine this issue but it could cause us to stop using CD's if necessary.

The cost savings have been great for us. Water bill maybe gone up $3/month? Disposables were like $40/month and once we purchased all our diapers we save that!

@hilsy85: the gdiapers are made up of 3 parts - the outer gpant, and a breathable nylon liner snaps into it and then either a cloth or flushable insert goes into the liner. Baby poo or pee hits the cloth or flushable insert and is contained by the liner. 90% of poo and pee stays within the cloth, insert and liner. So when you change your baby you just take out the cloth or flush the insert and reload the same gpant or liner with another cloth or insert. You can wash the gpants with regular laundry after a few uses.

If it is a really full diaper and the cloth or insert gets saturated with poo or pee then it will get contained by the liner and the liner will be soiled. If nothing got on the gpant then you just unsnap the liner and snap in a new one. I put my soiled liners in one of those mesh laundry bags (like a lingerie bag) and just throw the bag in with the regular laundry. Then you can just air dry the liners. So easy to just wash gpants and liners with the regular wash...the material is thin and easy to wash/dry...not like cloth diapers. I have a wet bag for the gcloths that i use and I have to do a long pre wash, sanitary wash (hot hot water) and extra rinse for cloth. That's why I prefer the flushable inserts...so easy and no real additional laundry since the gpants and liners can just go in the regular wash.

Here's a good blog with gdiaper details:

Regarding the flushable liners, I believe in the US most of the liners are marketed as flushable. The problem is they don't decompose like toilet paper and get stuck in the plumbing, so if you do use them, you should either toss them in the garbage or if you do flush, be prepared to have a plumber come out and snake your system.

Once my son started solids, I actually found I didn't need the liner any more, the poop just plops off into the toilet, where it belongs...which by the way, is the place it belongs even if you use disposables.

I would say, if you're only considering cloth diapers b/c of mommy guilt, then don't do it. They're not that hard to use, but the learning curve definitely takes longer than using disposables... and they are a bit more work since you'll have to do all of that extra laundry. We cloth diaper our baby, but it's a decision that we were really passionate about. Even though you see a ton of cloth diapers in the blog world, I'm pretty sure that you'll rarely see them out in the real world. That's my experience at least...

I don't have personal experience in the issue. I just wanted to say that my husband is more enthused about cloth diapers than I am. He is also much better at doing laundry in a timely manner than I am. I am 100% on board as far as cost and health go, but was slightly reluctant (only AFTER getting our positive pregnancy test) due to the increase in laundry. But DH is sold on the idea. :) I picked a good daddy for my babies!

ETA: He and his 4 younger siblings were all cloth diapered, with the old fashioned one too! And, if we stay here, there's a bathroom attached to the baby's room for easy spraying. :)

I started cloth with my daughter at 7 months old. We only started part time, leaving night times and occasional days that we just weren't in the mood for disposables. By 8 1/2 months I decided I was over spending money on disposables and that I was going to commit to cloth full time. I honestly did not enjoy it until about a month after that when I got some more diapers and could do laundry a little less often. Honestly though I buy super cheap pocket diapers through a co-op and the price combined with the cuteness factor is enough to make me keep going. It helps that hubby doesn't mind washing them too though!

We didn't start cloth diapering until my daughter was a month old and I am glad I waited. I waited because I was overwhelmed, completely exhausted and barely knew which way was up and the thought of adding something else new to our barely established life style change was just not going to happen. I am so glad I waited because I think if I would have tried to start earlier, I would have hated it. Now I love it and I haven't looked back. In fact, if we have a baby number two, I might start from the very beginning.

Also, as strange as this is, I love doing diaper laundry for some reason. I hate every other type of laundry but there is something about washing her diapers that makes me happy. A little odd, I know.

I use gdiapers and I love them! I was so scared to try at first bc disposables were so easy but once I started using the gdiapers I never went back :). I love not having to constantly take out the trash bags of disposable diapers...

I mostly use the flushable inserts (gfills) but use at least 2 cloth (gcloths) inserts a day. I love that I don't have to wash the outer gpants unless they are dirty...and you just throw them in with a regular load of laundry...and the liners catch the pee/poo and you can wash those so easily too...regular cycle and air dry. I hate washing the cloths...I do a pre-wash and then sanitary cycle and extra rinse...it takes forever for those cycles to run on our front load washing machine...but they come out fluffy and clean.

You can get pretty good deals on the gpants if you aren't picky about color. And I get the gfills from diapers.com when they run a 20% off promo which seems like pretty often...and I just buy a ton and shipping is free :)

LO is currently in the medium size gpants and they are suppose to last her until she is 28 pounds (hopefully she will be potty trained by then!)

@jessiejo17: I feel the same way!

I wanted to do it at first. My husband laughed at me and said I could try it. The more and more I thought about it though, I just don't think it will suit our family. I'm lazy enough as it is with laundry and house chores. What makes me think having a baby will change all of that. Plus with knowing I'm going to go back to work, it just seemed like one more thing to worry about. So no cloth diapers in our future.

Another thought... I think if I had tried to cloth diaper as soon as my LO was born, I probably would have given up. Taking care of a newborn is already hard enough, and disposables were so convenient for me for the first two months. Once I got the hang of taking care of a baby, it was easier for me to transition to cloth. I will probably do the same for any future kids.

@hilsy85: If it doesn't work for you, don't stress about it. I think we, as moms, put too much pressure on ourselves to be "perfect" and it's ok if some things don't work out for us and our families. As long as your baby is healthy, happy and loved, doesn't matter! :)

I'm half-a$$ing it. Cam is 4 months old and I'm just getting around to it. I have one Bum Genius 4.0 and one GroVia hybrid. I have a few inserts, but am going to try out the G-diaper disposable inserts. I am only trying it while at home for now after he poops for the day.

I definitely prefer the hybrid so far, since I like just changing the inside and not the entire diaper if he just pees. The jury is still out, disposables are so convenient, but I'd like to save a little money too. The overhead for cloth diapers is too much to go all the way right now and finding the right cloth diaper for us is so daunting.

@sorrycharlie: Hmm I feel like I get that too, but I also use salted water usually, so maybe it could be from that. I'm curious now, maybe I'll ask our super.

@banana: Thanks for your input! It's refreshing to hear from real moms who tried it and decided it wasn't for them :)

@daniellemybelle: Ha I also wonder if I only want to do it because it's a fad...honestly the cute factor is what really gets me. I don't care as much about the environmental stuff (bad, I know), and financially, while saving money is always nice, we could of course make it work with disposables.

@hilsy85: I read some things online as to how to figure out hard vs soft, but we consistently get staining in the toilet from the water (what would normally occur in weeks anywhere else, happens in a few days!), and when I boil water there's residue above the water line (most noticeable after I empty the pot).

Yes, I tried it for 2 weeks. haha. Couldn't do it. I was already stressed out about dealing with his reflux and gas problems and trying to pump out milk. I figured if I could choose between BFing and CDing, I would go with BFing so I went with disposables. No regrets! :)

I'm not TTC yet but since I read mommy blogs all the time, sometimes I catch myself thinking, "We should really cloth diaper..." But I honestly think it's just a fad I want to get in on. It's a ton of work and a big investment up front, so I remind myself that I don't have to follow every trend. :)

@mrs. bird: Hmm I would definitely consider trying them if i could send them back if they didn't work out. Definitely a good option to do that--or to sell them.

@bluestriped bee: i like the idea of gdiapers, but haven't heard great things about them. i like the idea that flips are one size so we don't have to worry about buying sets for each, you don't have to 'stuff' or more importantly 'unstuff' them, you can use all different kinds of inserts, you have the option of a disposable liner, and you can reuse the covers a few times & the covers can hang to dry so they'll hold up longer than if the whole thing had to go in the dyer. can you tell in excited to try them someday =D

@mrs. bird: I really like the flush able insert and was hoping there were others like it. I was wondering if you could use them in other diapers. Now that you mentioned that they work on Flips, that's great news. I heard good reviews on Flips.

Yeah, I've heard there a big demand on used diapers. I know I would consider buying used. I think I even heard of others using the site diaperswapper.com.

still TTC, but we're thinking of CD when the time comes (we have a front loading washer & super hard water, so not totally convinced yet). one good thing to keep in mind is that they have a high resale value, so if you give it a try & it doesn't end up being something you're interested in continuing, you can always sell them to get most of your money back. also, some stores have money back option if you try them & don't like them. from what i've read they are very much a personal preference, so there are lots of factors to consider when choosing one. i was looking at flips & heard they work well with gdiaper flushables in them, if you don't want to deal with diaper contents but still want an eco friendly way to dispose of the poo. i don't think there's any harm in trying!
