@Maysprout: I think it's easier to figure out what is going on if you stick to one thing like banana for 3-4 days, giving her 1 substantial meal of it per day (2-3 oz). Backtrack on the foods you have given her using this method to try and narrow down the possible culprit! If she seems really hungry when she wakes up, I would give her the solids for breakfast. I remember my LO was a few months older before I gave her any solids close to bedtime in case they upset her stomach.

@Andrea: Before last week it was more tastes of food. If I was having an apple I'd scrape a little off and let her try some or squish a bit of banana between my fingers. We've been doing that since 4 months but most days she didnt even have a taste of solid so probably a week or so between foods. Around 5 months she started getting a bit more but only about once or twice a week. Its only been this week where she's gotten a bit of solids everyday. Maybe I should back off, I just feel like she's really hungry when she wakes up, I'm not sure whether to give her less or give her more.

@Maysprout: wow! that is a lot of different foods for a 6 month old but maybe i did it really conservatively. how many days do you wait before moving onto a new food? what was the last thing that you introduced? maybe that is what is disagreeing with her? or could definitely be a growth spurt!

@Andrea: So far she's had pumpkin, peas, blueberry/pear, pear, banana, apple, turkey, avacado, rice cereal. Besides for the blueberry/pear we've stuck to single ingredient at a time while she gets the hang of solids. She usually eats 1/2 ounce at a time, sometimes an ounce and no more than twice a day but usualy once a day.

She'd been a really good sleeper and usually would go 6-8 hours before waking up to nurse. If she hit a growth spurt or when she had a stufy nose there'd usually be a couple days of waking up after 4 hours.

The past week and a half she'd been waking up more like every 2 hours. She's never done that even when she was a newborn.

I agree with Andrea, you don't have to give rice, oatmeal is a good alternative. I'd try that instead.

I kind of think it's a myth that your LO will sleep more if they start solids. If they don't have a good sleep foundation to begin with, feeding them solids isn't going to change anything. But more frequent wake-ups might be an indication that the food isn't agreeing with her. What are you feeding her at 6 months?

My son didn't change his sleep habits once he started solids. He didn't wake more and he didn't sleep longer either way.

She's gotten lots of fruits/veggies/meat. We just started rice cereal a few days ago because people swore it would be different than other foods and help her sleep longer, not our little girl. But rice cereal is probably the 10th thing she's tried. Like last night she had half a tablespoon of rice cereal in and ounce of breastmilk and then maybe 1/2 ounce of blueberry/pear mixture. And she also nursed before and after. She's just an eater.

He didn't start waking up more often but it definitely didn't help him sleep any longer!

And I second the replacing cereal with veggies/meat idea :)

6 months is a common time for a growth spurt, so this could be just the growth spurt needs for a week or so.

Also, I know people swear by solids but rice cereal is just empty sugar calories. It fills up the stomach a little more for a little longer but it runs through the system quickly. Right now your baby doesn't need solids and they have to learn how to digest solids. So it may be that they need more milk instead. Instead of rice cereal you should start your little one on veggies or even meat. They won't necessarily process it more but what they do process will have more nutrients to it.

My 7 month old has had no grains at all and he is an eating machine.

Baby has started getting more solids now that she's 6 months but it's seemed to coincide with her waking more frequently at night to breastfeed. She still nurses a lot during the day too so we haven't really changed our nursing schedule just added solids.

Over thanksgiving everyone swore that rice cereal would be the cure but we've tried it the past couple nights and she nurses, eats rice cereal and nurses again. After 2 hours of sleeping she's up and is not just comfort nursing but taking big swallows of milk. She's never been like this before during growth spurts, maybe this is just a big one but I think she also has more gas now that she's getting some solids (or that's what it sounds like when she wakes up). Not loving that she's not sleeping as long but I also feel bad not feeding her when she's acting so hungry at night.
