Ah... yes, definitely a wonder week, leading into the 6 week growth spurt. I'm looking forward to the "leaps" she will come up with after the wonder week though-- she has given us really fleeting smiles, so quick I wonder if I really saw it. I want some real ones! Just put that book on hold at the library so I can skim it while rocking the baby :)

@Foodnerd81: Growth spurts are physical growing, wonder weeks are mental leaps. Week 5 wonder week is all about becoming more sensitive to external stimulus so they are harder to settle but you will also see they are more alert and interested in things. Its been true for E. Week 6 is then a growth spurt so they eat more and fuss lots. Of course, all babies are different and do these things at different times....

@MegWag: that makes me feel better since she always nursed to sleep.

@Mrs Green Grass: this is the one thing that does worry me- I think she is getting more like 12 hours a day and would be better off with more but she just won't sleep sometimes. Not to mention she is definitely having a growth spurt so she's been eating every hour today. She'll nap for a short time in my arms in between but if I do something horrible like hand her to Dh she wakes up. Sigh. More tv and hellobee time for me.

All that really matters is total sleep. It should be 15 plus hours at that age. My baby definitely needed to go down after two and took three naps for a long time. My friend's baby was always good with two (longer). Total sleep was about the same.

For what it's worth, I never managed to get Linus on the EASY schedule. He loved to nurse to sleep so that is what we did. I've got an awesome 18 month old with great sleep habits who self weaned super smoothly at about 15 months. Just wanted to be a voice to say that EASY isn't the be all/end all.

I was confused too in the early days. DD just seemed to eat and sleep!! It wasn't until 2-3 months old that she could even stay awake after nursing and gradually fell into a more natural EASY routine. I wish someone had told me this beforehand!

You can do EASY earlier than 3 months. It even has a sample schedule for a 4 week old (or maybe it's a 6 week old) in the book.

We followed EASY, but it for the ROUTINE, not the schedule. Xander would almost always stay up for at least 2 hours, and then his naps were anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours! Just whenever he woke up, I'd start the EASY routine with feeding, following by activity!

He didn't settle into a sleep schedule until around 11 weeks when he started to sleep 7 hours at night. Then he was very regular and ate every 3 hours during the day (and still does now at 6 months), but his naps are still all over the place. But EASY definitely made my day more predictable!

@Cherrybee: I don't know if its a wonder week or growth spurt (is there a difference?) but yeah, something's up. She actually has been sleeping alright, even took two good naps, but the evening fussiness and constant hunger is back. Last night we have her a pumped bottle and she fizzled it and was hungry for more. She has maybe an hour total of chill happy awake time, the rest you can calm her but you need to be working at it (bouncing good, holding while seated in a comfortable chair, bad). But I just remind her (me) that she is going through a growth spurt, and that all te crying will tire her out so she can sleep. Common refrain in the car while she screams is "yes, let it out! Get all that energy out.,," Otherwise we will lose our minds.

She was good. She's having her 6 week growth spurt so she hungry every 1.5hrs yesterday evening. We decided to just feed her on demand and got her down to sleep for the night at 10pm. She then woke at 1am, 4am, 6am , 7am and then was up for the day at 9am. Its now 1pm and she hasn't napped yet - and is a grumpy girl!

How's C doing? Are you having the week 5 wonder week?

EASY worked reasonably well for us until we hit a perfect storm of wonder week, six month sleep regression and teething - nursing to sleep has been my lifesaver!

There's certainly no harm in trying for a loose routine at this age but you're still in the trenches and fourth trimester so I say just go with whatever works!

I read the book. I seem to recall that she she says that the main thing about EASY is that it's not a strict routine - it' slap bang between going with whatever your baby wants and having her on a strict schedule. She urges you to be lead by your baby but within the boundaries of the routine. To that end, I've been following the spirit of EASY but letting Elliott tell me when she's ready to move onto the next stage.

For the first five weeks of so, she wanted to sleep all day (and scream all evening, of course) so her A time was mostly eating and having her nappy changed. We just made sure that she didn't fall asleep on the bottle during the day - and if she did, I woke her up by changing her nappy (then regretted it as I rocked her into the S stage!!!). The last couple of days, however, she has been awake so much more - I'm trying to entertain her until I see her sleepy cues and then I'm getting her down to nap pronto! Or trying to, at least!

Of course, you're having the opposite - C doesn't like to nap so much! I reckon the Baby Whisperer would say to let her lead you with regard to timings - but remind you not to nurse to sleep, no matter how desperate you become (I'm not sure if I agree, personally).

It's a good book, although she's a bit crazy in places. She goes on about warning your baby when you're going to pick him/her up and before you wipe her bum etc - she's convinced they understand every word from birth. Bizarre!

5.5 weeks is too young to worry about a real schedule. I'd just follow your gut for now. Thonly thing we did at that age was bedtime.

@Foodnerd81: Haha, maybe. I know that when i read her book, it only dealt with routines starting from 3 months old. This link may help with a newborn: http://www.babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=63243.0

I think it's good to get into a routine, but i wouldn't worry about it too much. I think i started a loose version of EASY around the 10 week mark.

Baby Whisperer's EASY starts at around 3 months. 5.5 weeks may be too young to start. You could try and follow the routine (eat, awake, sleep, you) but i wouldn't try and follow the timing that's recommended in the book. I believe it's for more older babies, not newborns.

I've mentioned in previous boards that my babe couldn't stay awake for more than 60 minutes. So there was no real "awake" time. It was more eating and sleeping.

I keep reading that babies should only be awake for 90 minutes to 2 hours at a time, max. I try for that, but I feel like it doesn't work for my baby, or I'm doing something wrong. She's a slow nurser, so she wakes up and eats for at least 45 minutes, if it's been a long nap. So basically, at that point it's almost time to start the process to get her back down? Every day is different but lately it seems like she does OK with two long naps-- one actually starts less than 2 hours after waking up for the day, the other sometime in the afternoon. They range from under 2 hours to 4, which I never know if that's too long. She is 5.5 weeks old. Night sleep is pretty good-- a stretch of 5 hours or more, eat, then another 2.5 usually.

What was or is your nap schedule for the early days?

Don't you just wish there was a guide tailored perfectly to your baby that you could just follow and it would work perfectly??
