I had a dead end, boring desk job before my LOs came along, but I was taking classes to transition into something I was interested in. I ended up quitting my desk job after my first LO was born and becoming self-employed with my new skills. It has actually been great! Also, since I set my own hours, we can usually be very flexible when kids are sick or school is closed for holidays. I used to be much more ambitious but now I am happy working quietly, leaving at 4 (or earlier), letting emails sit overnight, etc. I passed on 2 job offers to stick with my current employer and get my maternity benefits; and just used those opportunities to get re-classified/salary bumps here. I definitely try to get out of doing any kind of extra curriculars and trips if I can though. I'm super lucky that my current district pays teachers for signing up for extra stuff, so there are a handful of teachers that take on the bulk of the paid extra duties...</p> <p>My old school district did *not* pay for a surprising amount of extra work, but everyeone was expected to sign up to do these things anyway. It has also pushed me towards going back and following my true passion, teaching! If I have to be away from LO for so long, I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to give her a good life and to do something meaningful in the world. </p>
