Yep. I'm more driven now and am changing careers. I'm more sure of what I want and what example I want to set for my kids

Kind of! Before I got pregnant I had quit a job that I hated and was kind of like what now?! I had known I wanted to go back and finish school (I only had a two year general Ed decree), but I didn't know what I wanted to do!
It wasn't until after I had my son that I decided on a career path, and started going back to school when he was 1.5 years old.

Yes. I had a dead end, boring desk job before my LOs came along, but I was taking classes to transition into something I was interested in. I ended up quitting my desk job after my first LO was born and becoming self-employed with my new skills. It has actually been great! Also, since I set my own hours, we can usually be very flexible when kids are sick or school is closed for holidays. Also, daycares around here close early (ours is 4:30), so a flexible job is key or we would also need to hire a nanny.

@mauxie: same here! I used to be really ambitious and have lofty career goals working my way up the ladder. I like my
Position now and Don't really have the same desire to advance in my career at the moment and take on more responsibilities and hours. Because DH travels quite a. It for work and that his office is farther away, I need to have more flexibility for parenting emergencies. I'm okay with it. Hoping to go part time again after #2 anyways which naturally kind of dampers your career. Once the kids are in school I will probably feel differently about work again (maybe).

Yup, but I'm totally okay with it. I used to be much more ambitious but now I am happy working quietly, leaving at 4 (or earlier), letting emails sit overnight, etc. I passed on 2 job offers to stick with my current employer and get my maternity benefits; and just used those opportunities to get re-classified/salary bumps here. So, while I'm not necessarily climbing the ladder as I would have pre-kids, I'm good with my current situation!

It did. Before, staying late and volunteering for extra stuff was just what I did, but now I'm out the door as soon as possible and am looking for part-time work so I can stay relevant in my field while spending more time being a mom.

It completely has.

Before kids - workaholic trying to climb the ranks/get promoted often/job hopped for more pay often.

Currently - maintaining my current position and current employer, trying to be in the office as little as possible (40 hours max).

Future plans - Work part time once we have a second/third LO... which will involve down sizing our home, lots of strategic budgeting, and probably relocating. As crazy as this sounds, I cant wait to get to slow down our current pace of life and take some time to just be a mom.

I guess one good thing about teaching/school librarianship is that there is no "climb". I definitely try to get out of doing any kind of extra curriculars and trips if I can though. I'm super lucky that my current district pays teachers for signing up for extra stuff, so there are a handful of teachers that take on the bulk of the paid extra duties...

My old school district did *not* pay for a surprising amount of extra work, but everyeone was expected to sign up to do these things anyway. It sucked.

No, not really. It has made me less likely to relocate for a job but I plan to wait for a promotion to open up at work in the next few years.

@DillonLion: I know. I know. I've been late a couple times and its was horrible arriving at the daycare center all when she was all by herself and the teacher because the rest of the center was closed.

Yep, I was with a company that I loved for 12 years, never dreamed of leaving but when they moved to an hour plus away I found a new job. I couldn't imagine being so far from LO and his school, what if there was a backup on the highway, my car broke down, etc.? I never dreamed I'd leave and then I did.

nope, i just want to work less, so i will be going part time after my mat leave. Before i had kids, i always thought i would have no problem with continuing to work full time.

Definitely, and I'm learning to deal with it. Like @Mrs D: it has really slowed my climb because I'm now limited in my hours, and what I can do.

We don't have any family/friends near by, so it is just me and DH, so that makes it harder.

Yes - it has definitely slowed my climb...and I am currently ok with it.

Before DD I was the one who would raise my hand for every work trip and get crazy good exposure from it. I still get good exposure but not quite as great. I am totally ok with this - but it has changed things for sure.

Having an LO really pushed me towards trying to be more entrepreneurial so I can someday set my own hours. It has also pushed me towards going back and following my true passion, teaching! If I have to be away from LO for so long, I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to give her a good life and to do something meaningful in the world.
