@AMELIEISME: I seriously don't think I had on a shirt for the entire first month :) If LO wasn't nursing (which she was doing constantly), my nipples were SO sore and cracked that anything rubbing against them was sheer torture. Ugh! So glad those early days are behind us :)

We have a 2 set of super steep stairs - living area in the first level, bedrooms in the second down and my office and sewing room in the 3rd level down - I'm 32 weeks and it sucks when I need to go all the way up or down, usually take a little break otherwise my heart feels like it's coming out my chest!! I don't have hope's it will get better once the baby is here, hopefully it wont be too bad =[

I had a c section last Friday (8/3) and our nursery and bedroom are upstairs from our main floor. They tell you to avoid stairs as much as you can x 2weeks but it really wasn't avoidable. Stairs really aren't that bad though! I have tried to limit some of my use by having essential items on both floors for the past week. But really stairs haven't been that bad and have been using them with normal frequency the last few days. Things that really involve your abs directly are much harder, like going from laying to sitting or seated to standing position. Mind you, stairs didn't bother me when I was preg either so it may depend on your condition prior to giving birth as well.

I had a vaginal birth w/ some pretty significant tearing but had no problems with stairs when I returned home. I just took a pretty hefty dose of Advil every few hours as prescribed by my doctor, and that left my pain at a totally manageable level for running around the house and walking up and down stairs.

It's not too bad, honestly. I do a lot of our activity downstairs though. I kind of lived on the couch for a bit too and C slept in her bouncer.

I do agree to keep a changing mat, diapers and wipes downstairs. You are not EVER going to want to walk upstairs for every, single diaper change.

I was worried about this too, we live in a split level house, so no matter when you come in from the outside, you have stairs either to the upstairs or the basement!

I had a vag birth with lots of stitching; our house is 2 levels, bedrooms upstairs all else downstairs. My OB said to restrict stairs to twice a day; DH took this literally-if I came down in the morning and had to go back upstairs for something he'd make me stay (I in turn made him run up and down the stairs for me). I also had severe sciatic pain which lasted for two weeks so staying on one level was fine by me; I wouldn't even carry DD down the stairs for fear the sciatic pain would hit and I'd drop her. I used the pack-n-play for naps and diaper changes and just made sure the diaper bag was super full of supplies each morning. Did fine.

I had a c-section and our stairs didn't bother me either. I am pretty stubborn though and wanted to be up and moving right away.

For the first few weeks we would just haul everything downstairs (nursing pillow and bassinet) in the morning and then back up at bedtime. We had a bassinet stand for each level. I always went up to the nursery though for diaper changes.

I had an unmedicated vaginal delivery with no tearing so I had no issues at all with our stairs, or driving, or anything else. ;)

And on a still pregnant living with stairs note: My midwife told me that she rarely sees malpresentation in mommas who walk up & down stairs often, either in their home or going up to their home like in a 2nd floor apt! Just keep moving in labor & bub should get into optimum birthing position. ;)

I have a vaginal birth and I definitely would have appreciated one-floor living!

We have all our bedrooms upstairs too. For the first week I didn't once come downstairs. I had a hard time healing, and didn't really even want to leave my room. My husband, mom and sister brought me meals and I was so thankful for that. I say, if you can, just take it easy the first week and take advantage of the fact that you will have people to take care of you and wait on you hand and foot for probably the only time in your life! By week 3 you'll more than likely be on your own for the most part..

Our bedrooms are all upstairs, too. I had a vaginal delivery with very minor tearing. I was pretty sore the first two days, but felt good enough to walk around by the time we got home.

I barely came downstairs though ~ mostly because I was almost constantly topless! (Breastfeeding was so tough!) DH would bring me food and water upstairs :)

Ditto on the dual changing stations. I had a loooong vaginal delivery with little tearing, but after a 58-hour labor and hooked up to an iv the entire time, I had major leg and feet swelling. That made walking difficult, so I tried to limit trips up and down the stairs.

Another suggestion is to set up multiple bathroom stations. I had big pads, tucks, mesh panties, prep h, and a peri bottle for each bathroom (upstairs and downstairs) so I would be able to go without taking the stairs.

@jholler25: I had a csection and the stairs were not that bad.
One thing that was awesome was that we set up a changing station upstairs and downstairs so we didn't have to go to the nursery for every diaper change and there are a lot of diaper changes at the beginning. Actually we rarely changed his diaper in the nursery for the first few weeks.

Okay good to know that vag or C-section, I'm not going to have to set the stairs on fire, lol;)

@sandy: I never thought stairs did a flip of calorie-burn to my body (like people who think taking the stairs instead of elevators make a difference, I was always like "Pfft!"), but my heart is a-pumping by the time I get to the top of those suckers! It's so weird! I can't even imagine what it'll be like when I'm a WALRUS!

Oh, btw - I did read to keep 1 boppy upstairs and 1 downstairs so you don't have to go on a Boppy Hunt every time you nurse. That's what got these wheels turning about the stairs since I already give them the Evil Eye every day.
