@LaineysMom: good points! I guess I'll start pumping sooner than I thought :) it's worth it if it keeps up my supply!

@MarieJ: I exclusively pump, so my answer is not definitive.. but (for me) pumping has ensured that I completely empty my breasts each day and maintain a fairly good supply (34 - 36 oz.). When I was EBF DD would just feed on one side and then leave the other one engorged.. Ever since I started pumping I consistently produce 6 oz.+ over what she eats per day..

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that LO may not empty your breasts if they're not hungry, so adding an extra feeding session may not be as productive as pumping.. but I'm def. not a LC.. just my thoughts..

@LaineysMom: That makes sense. Do you think it matters if I add an extra feeding opposed to pumping? I only really pump when I'm going out & would like to avoid the pump until a week and a half from now when maternity leave is close to being over and I'm trying to add to my freezer stash.

I guess I could pump, but I'm lazy & I'd rather nurse.

@MarieJ: I think the day that I noticed the dip my last pump was a couple of hours earlier than usual, so that may have played into my diminished supply..

@FutureMrsMcK: I'm hoping my supply has just regulated and that's why I don't feel as full. Here's to hoping! Thanks for the advice!

@LaineysMom: thank you! I will definitely add 1-2 pumping sessions to maintain/boost my supply.

I'm sure you're probably fine, but I would add in an extra pumping session "just in case". I was really bad last week and went 8 hours without pumping because we were out and I didn't feel like it. My supply dipped a little (4-6 oz.) the next day, but after adding 2 extra pumping sessions it's back to normal.

From what I understand emptying your boobs stimulates milk production...the more you empty them the more your body responds by making more. So I can't imagine you've hurt your supply.

I feel like my milk supply stabilized around 12 weeks, and they didn't feel so full all of the time. Now at 6 months they really only feel full when it's been 4+ hours between feedings (and engorged at 6+), even though E still eats more frequently than that during the day (about every two hours), and he's definitely getting milk because he swallows and sometimes chokes on it a little bit. But unless it's been several hours my boobs are soft and empty feeling--but they're not!

So I wouldn't worry!

@brownie: she's 13 weeks. I've been nursing her all day today, and while she seems content, they just feel so empty. I guess all is well since I can hear her swallowing & she's happy.

Depending on the age of your baby, your boobs will feel different anyway. The best way to make sure nothing happens is to nurse your baby as much as possible.

Yesterday, DH & I went to an NBA game & a comedy show for our first official date since LO was born. We dropped LO off at my mom's at 4 and picked her up around 10:45. Like a fool, I didn't bring my pump (I guess I underestimated how much time we would be gone). By the time we were leaving the comedy show, I was so, so engorged and my breasts hurt more than they ever had before. I was in the car hand expressing milk into a napkin when finally, we stopped at a fast food restaurant, asked for a cup, and I used the cup to hand express my milk into to relieve some of the pain/pressure. I ended up almost filling the cup up with milk.

LO nursed when we got home & during the night. Today, my breasts feel less full, almost empty. It's crazy & worrying me! She has nursed throughout the day & I can hear her swallowing. Also, I can squirt milk out, but it's just crazy that after I failed to nurse/pump for 7 hours yesterday, the next day my boobs feel, um different.

Did I hurt my supply? Why do my boobs feel lighter & emptier? What can I do to fix it?
