We used them both at the same time. I went more by what outfit I wanted than whether it was 2t or 24m.

I didn't really pay much attention to the differences between 2T and 24 months, I just bought the stuff I thought was cute if it fit.

My son wore a lot of 24 month / 18-24 month stuff. I didn't really realize there was such a small difference in the sizes otherwise I probably would have skipped 24 month tops. And now we have mostly skipped 2T size and gone straight to 3T.

For my DD, I'm mostly just going straight to 2T, but she's currently still in 18 months size. Buying some 24 month stuff that doesn't come in 2T size like rompers with the snaps.

I went straight to 2t once my DD started outgrowing her 18 months stuff. Even though the shirts are a little snug on her belly, the length is good. (She's 50th for height, 90th for weight). I figured that the 2t might fit her a little longer because I'm hoping she'll just grow height wise and they'll fit longer than 24 month. That's my theory anyway.

My kid mostly wore 24 month. Now he is on the cusp of 2T/3T. He can wear 3T in shirts but not in pants yet. 24 months shirts are too short now for him.

Most of our clothes that size were hand me downs so he did wear several 24 month shirts. He did outgrow those before he outgrew the 2t ones. He is tiny so he never fit into 24 month pants or shorts really. We had one pair of pants in a brand that runs small that actually fit. Even now at 3 he wears 18 month shorts and 2t or 3t pants but they have to have an adjustable waist. 24 months are still huge in the waist., He potty trained early too which did not help matters with his bottoms!

@Foodnerd81: I'm guilty of letting my kids wear favorite dresses as tunics/shirts for ages just because I love them and get sad to put them away! I've got a few dresses from Gap that have been in rotation in one or the other kid's drawer in this way for the solid 3.5 years I've had kids - never stored them because someone could always wear them, somehow! I'm finding sweaters, too, they can sometimes share...a bit big on one kid and small on the other, but it works in a pinch! :)

@Mamasig: @rattles: good point about seasonality! I'm guessing a lot of 18m dresses/rompers we already have from DD1 will still work in the summer (DD2 turns 2 in May but is 20-something percentile for weight and close to 50th percentile for height). You're so right that dresses can be a little short and it's fine! I do have a handful of 24 month stuff...I guess it really will just be a wait and see situation.

Both. I bought a lot of stuff at that age used and it didn't seem to matter if it was 2T or 24mo. She was always in the 75th percentile for height, too.

LO has been in 18-24 months & 24 months for a while. Maybe it is just how I have shopped but I've found she's actually skipping 2T more than anything! She is moving into 3T pants but still is wearing a lot of 24 months stuff.

18-24 months fit my kid for those six months. 2T looked comically baggy. I wonder if some of it was seasonal? It was the summer, and loose tank tops look indecent in a way that too-long sleeves wouldn't. Plus, I liked that the 18-24 dresses/skirts came with bloomers. Most of her 2Ts didn't. We actually spent more time in those than we did 2T - we went to 3T by the next summer.

DS1 totally skipped 18-24 months, but DS2 didn't. I guess it depends on the kid and season.

I think the difference is negligible and I only bought a few 24 month things when I couldn't find what I needed in 2t. I wouldn't worry about filling in the gaps.

We pretty much skipped 24mo size too! IMO the difference is really minimal and with my lanky kids, 2T just fits better overall.

My LO is more short and a tiny bit chubby, so 24 m was better than 2t, but I pretty much used them interchangeably. I wouldn't worry about filling in size gaps, but then, my kid is always wearing clothes that are too big in the fall so she can still wear them slightly too small in the spring.

We didn't have much in the way of 24 month stuff with DD1, because she was in it by 1 year and was also skinny and just needed the length. Since our second was a girl, we didn't buy much at all, so she was the same-- pretty much straight to 2T. I think they're awfully close size-wise though, and vary by brand.

DD1 is super skinny, and went straight from 18 months into 2T because she needed the length, not the width. Since she potty trained around 2.5, her 18 month skirts/shorts STILL fit this summer without the diaper bulk - she's been in them forever!

I'm not sure what DD2 will do...but I'm buying a few things ahead for her in the last of the summer sales, and am debating whether or not I need to fill in the gaps in the hand me downs from big sister's wardrobe, since everything is either 18m or 2T.

I'm curious how common it is to totally skip the 24 month size - maybe DD2 won't need anything, either. What did your LO do?
