She encouraged us to have E off bottles by 15 months and onto straw cups and the like. It took a few days at 12 months and I was so happy to put those damn things away!

Bottle feeding yes at age 1, but it has nothing to do with the milk part of things, just the vehicle for the milk.

Yikes! We saw one ped in our practice that was not breastfeeding friendly and also mentioned the potential for teeth issues (not true from my research) and couldn't believe we were still nursing as much as we were when LO was close to one. She also couldn't believe I still made that much milk (what??) It freaked me out that she knew so little about breastfeeding but we switched to another dr in the same practice who is much more positive and encouraging about breastfeeding beyond 2 even. As long as your LO is healthy and also eating food (and you still want to) I think it's ridiculous for a dr to tell you to stop. And the idea that chocolate milk is better than breastmilk for a one year old??? I'd love to hear the doctor's rationale behind that one!

she encouraged me to stop night nursing at a year, but encouraged me to nurse as much as i want the rest of the time. lo never really took a bottle, so that wasn't an issue. I appreciated her input but didn't exactly put a plan in place based on her recommendation.

She's only encouraged me to cut out night nursing, and hinted (but didn't say outright) that weaning might be a good idea if that's what it took to stop my very insistent 10 month old from demanding the boob in the middle of the night.

Mine said to stop nursing at a year, but it was advice specific to us. LO was losing weight and breast milk just wasn't enough. Luckily, I was able to cut down to once a day and solid intake/weight started increasing, so then I kept nursing him once/day until 19 months, when he stopped on his own. I don't think she just blanket gives that advice though, it was definitely due to weight issues.

No experience, but I would definitely have done the same as you and switched immediately! That's an issue we'll be bringing up when looking for a pediatrician, so hopefully it'll never come to that. Though I'm SO overwhelmed at the thought of finding one. Gah.

She wanted us off bottles by 12 months (15-18 at the latest!) DD was on a straw cup full time (other then when we nurse) at 11 months so it wasn't an issue. She hasn't encourged is to wean and if she did I wouldnt listen!

Glad you switched peds because nursing actually has the opposite effect and promotes oral development!

He didn't say anything about nursing but wanted her to stop using bottles by 12 months and a pacifier by 18 months. She had a really easy transition from bottles to sippy cups at about 11.5 months and we were able to get rid of the pacifier at 19 months. He said both were related to tooth and gum development.

They like parents to start bottle weaning around 12-15 months but encourage nursing for as long as both baby and mother want to. There ARE nutritional benefits to continued nursing as long as it's used as a supplement to regular food instead as the primary food source.

@Bao: umm, our pediatrician was the same way! I basically just ignored her, and we couldn't really switch because we were on a military post. She told me that breastfeeding past age 1 could cause ear infections. Nonsense!

I think she may have mentioned something about bottle weaning, maybe by 15 months? We were done right around 12 months so I didn't pay much attention to it. I hated bottles and formula and couldn't wait to get done with them. She never made any recommendations about breastfeeding. I think at his 9m appointment it came up that I had needed to stop nursing and she said something like "oh that's too bad." At the time I felt really bad about that remark, but oh well.

She mentioned at 12 month check up that she likes to have the bottles gone by 15 months, I was okay with this and agreed. She had no issues with sippy cups so we just worked on pushing that and then cut the bottle off cold turkey around 14 months.

Our pedi recommended we switch to sippy/straw cups from bottles at 12 months. Like @Anagram:, he still has a night time bottle. He demands it actually, which is sad. We taught him at a young age if he wanted his milk, he had to go sit in his chair. At 19 months, he automatically sits in his chair when he wants a bottle. If we offer him anything else, he pushes it away and gets upset. We'd let him be upset, but he's one of THOSE babies that cries till they throw up. His throw up is super smelly and gross.

The pedi also recommended we stop nursing at 12 months because there's not really a nutritional benefit. And since DS wasn't sleeping through the night, the pedi said weaning would also help with that. I was ready to stop pumping and nursing by the time he turned 1 anyhow so I was on board. However, while the pedi recommended it, he did say if we wanted to continue nursing, then that's up to us. Just his recommendation.

Oh my gosh. I thought it was known that nursing is hugely beneficial until at least 2.

To answer though, I never asked! I guess I formed my own opinion, but they never did and never would discourage nursing. They are very pro BFing. If they did I would find someone else.

Bottle feeding, yes. Our practice generally tells parents to start bottle weaning (switching to straw or sippy cups at meals only), but since our LO had some feeding problems, she didn't bring it up till LO was 15 months.

Buuut we haven't listened and LO still has a night time bottle.

Our old pediatrician encouraged me to stop nursing LO1 when she turned one. She said most doctors recommend not going much past one because it could cause issues with teeth and doesn't provide many benefits past one. After that suggestion (I felt pressure and it seems ridiculous to me) and the idea to add chocolate to my LO's whole milk to get her to drink it, we switched doctors that next day. My girls current pediatrician hasn't mentioned any such thing and never puts pressure on to do anything I'm not comfortable with.

Did your LO's pediatrician encourage you to stop nursing or bottle feeding at a certain age? If so, did you follow their recommendation? Go with your gut?
