For those of you that are pro vaccines, discussing with other parents, will you please include compassion for less healthy children as a reason to vaccinate? So many people think their decision just impacts themselves and their kid, but my child needed a liver transplant and will never be able to get MMR and will always be immunocomprimised. He has spent 3 of his 10 months of life hospitalized. We delayed one of the shots due to his egg allergy, but it turned out to be fine. He had been given it before with no issues, but we didn't know about his egg allergy when he was younger. We stayed in the doctor's office to see if he had any reactions. She also checks each vile before the vaccination is given to ensure that the medicine isn't expired. I suppose there are all sorts of things that a person can do to feel more comfortable about the vaccines they do ultimately end up taking.</p> <p>@LovelyPlum: Oh gees... We skipped chicken pox completely (I will be homeschooling so we don't have to worry about daycare/ school difficulties). We did MMR at 17 months and he'll get his remaining shots at his 2 year appointment, other than chicken pox obviously. We also choose not to do the flu vaccine. This isn't on schedule for the doctors office, but our doctor has been 100% supportive of our decisions.</p> <p>Edited to add- if our son does not get chicken pox by age 12 we will vaccinate him for it at that time. He have friends who do not vaccinate though and they have had chicken pox parties twice in the last few years. I mentioned earlier that I was nervous about the Guardasil, but something like the chicken pox vaccine never worried me at all. And the specific strain of the flu shot changes every year, but I still get that. For me personally, I don't think a new drug being introduced is a bad thing (it's often not!). I don't have kids yet but I am generally nervous about new medicines. I think I would prefer that medicines injected into my body (or a baby's body) be around for a decade or so before I even try them. My mom took a morning sickness pill in the 70s that was prescribed by her doctor but it was horrible and my sister was born with various "issues." So many other kids were also born with wide range of birth defects. The pill was ultimately taken off the US market even though the FDA never deemed it to be unsafe. I'm definitely not against vaccines.
