I was going to go through a bank, but they wouldn't touch my supply because I drank Mother's Milk Tea..... I know I won't use it so I found someone who will! She had a micro-preemie and her baby won't tolerate formula. I don't know if I would use donor milk from someone I didn't know, but it depends the situation (like in the case of the mom I'm donating to, I'm guessing she has tried everything and her already sick LO won't tolerate formula). I haven't had the need, thankfully. I would choose donor milk over formula, but of course only from a trusted source (close friend/family member or milk bank certified). I told my husband shortly after I had DD that if something happened to me, he was to call our birth center and ask them to get us some safe donor milk for her. I knew they would do everything they could to help. I think it's kind of odd when people say they wouldn't use donor milk from a human but they have no problem feeding their kids milk from cows. I don't understand why it would be any different, provided both kinds of milk are pasteurized (as most donor milk is). But I donated milk to a lady I met from Human milk for Human Babies and also a close friend. I think milk sharing is wonderful but I would be paranoid about using someone else's milk. Because formula is more difficult to digest than BM, it is more common in formula fed infants, but especially more common in premature babies fed formula because their intestines are weaker to begin with. @grizz: please correct me if I am wrong! Preemie babies sometimes have intestines that aren't totally done being grown, and have trouble digesting, so formula can exacerbate/cause issues. That said, DS2 managed to get it at 3 months old while on exclusive breastmilk. So who the heck knows. His presentation was extremely rare. The hospital I work for gives pasteurized human milk to preemies and other babies in the NICU due to the risk of necrotizing intercolitis with formula feeding. I'm a huge supporter of safe, educated milk donation and receipt.
