People are always asking me and sometimes I tell them the truth which is that we dont have a plan i'm just following Wesley's lead. Other time I get sarcastic and tell them we will quit when he leaves for college.

People ask me but I think mostly they're more curious. There might be some judgement from mil because she didn't breastfeed and 'doesn't know anyone who ever did!' but I couldn't care less. I just say we still breastfeed and leave it at that. I used to site the WHO recommendation if someone was particularly incredulous or interested but now that LO's almost two I just say we'll continue as long as it works for both of us.

Yup, I was asked with J and have with L now too. My answer was and is that "cows milk isn't recommended until after 12 months at which point I would introduce it gradually." That usually shuts them up but if they bring up formula I just say "I'm hoping to not have to use formula"

My mom asked my sister with her first all the time! I'm guessing now that my Lo is approaching a year my mom will assert her unsolicited opinion about it over the holidays when we see her. My response will be yes, we will nurse until one of us is ready to stop and I wont open it up for discussion because it's not.

DHs grandma asks if I'm still nursing sometimes but it doesn't strike me as a bad thing, just making conversation. She's over 90 though so even if it were negative I'd give her a pass!

No one asks me, but when I mentioned M's teething, MIL said it would be hard to nurse then. I told her it wouldn't be, cause I nursed D til 15 months even with teeth. She just didn't know.

I get some comments from my DH's family. While BF is perfectly acceptable where he is from, most women go back to work when the baby is between 4-6 months. Among the women I know, everyone stops nursing at that point and switches to formula (no idea if pumping at work is big in France). Anyways, my ILs and my BIL often make comments "oh, you're still nursing" or "how long are you going to nurse for". We are going to visit them next week, so I'm prepared for comments about nursing my 1 yo (although, we are technically in the process of weaning).

@Greentea: I'm definitely going to tell them about the WHO recommendations if they start getting nosy!

I get asked all the time! E is 10 months old. I just tell them when I am good and ready we will stop and not until then. Dh is really supportive, so it feels good to have someone in my corner. My first goal was 6 months and my next is 12 months and see how it goes from there.

The in laws ask all the time. SIL and cousin in law (is that a thing?) were pregnant and due around the same time as me and were having a conversation about how it's "unnatural" to breastfeed past 3 months and babies don't need the milk so they'll do it for three months and stop. Ugh. Whatever. They know I breastfed LO until 18 months and plan to do the same this time around if possible. My mom asked once why I was still breastfeeding at a year old and I told her it's the new recommendation, she said we weren't breastfed that long and we turned out fine...I told her that it doesn't bother me to do it but just because she made different decisions doesn't mean I have to. She dropped it. :)

@pinkb: Yeah sometimes I feel like I need to defend myself, but then I remember it's none of their business so I just confidently say we are doing it as long as it works for us and it's working now.

BUT it is also a lot easier now that C only nurses in the morning and at night, so I never have to deal with it in public any more.

I bf'd my daughter until she was 2. My father continually asked me when i was going to feed her "real food". My daughter's father and I were friends but never married. When my daughter turned almost 1, he married. Him and his wife constantly asked when i would stop nursing because my daughter pulled at their shirt and also it was hard for them to put her to sleep. Honestly every time anyone asked i wanted to smack them, but cooler heads prevailed and i said, I'm not sure maybe when she can talk and tell me she's done?!?? Ha ha. Seriously, i would just brush them off and eventually they stopped asking.

I didn't BF but I am with my SIL a lot with our babies and she gets asked all the time, her DD is 17 months. I feel bad for her when they ask because it makes her feel bad and feel as if she has to defend herself. I tell her to tell everyone to mind their own business.

Yeah, quite a bit, and I find it annoying, weird, or don't mind, depending on who asks. Dh's grandmother asked me every time since C was about 6 months. She never sounds judgmental but always asks. Mil seemed surprised after about six months too.

I think people don't realize it's recommended and that babies need formula, not cows milk, until a year.

Now at 16 months, I go back and forth between wanting to help it seem more normal, or kind of glossing over it so people don't think its weird or something. But I find I get fewer comments if I sound confident in my initial response.

Yes, people ask now that LO is past 12 months. Actually, they usually say something like "you're done with nursing, right?" and are surprised when I say no. They don't really judge though, I think they just make assumptions and are curious.

All. The. Time. My MIL literally lives across 5 he street and would ask like once a week. She never breastfed & around 12 months I said something about going until 2 & she said "oh no. She doesn't need to be doing THAT, until she's two." Hmm, I wasn't asking your opinion, I was juts going with the flow of the conversation. She ended up dropping all but one session by 14.5 months & I helped her drop the last one but MIL did just ask the other day. I don't know why she cares so freaking much. It's none of her business.

@aprild: good job! I think a lot of people just don't know the current trends/ recommendations. I had one lady that brought it up and I think she was trying to be nice but said, "well, I be it saves a lot of money on milk and stuff." I was like, "huh, never thought about it like that..." (because that has nothing to do with it!)

No one ever asks me that. I think it is kind of private! I would probably just respond, "World Health Organization recommends 'till 2." A general response that doesn't give an answer. I have one friend who asked but we have LO's the same age and she nurses publicly without a cover so I didn't mind discussing it. (We both hope to nurse until 2.)

Yes, I got the question from my in-laws and my grandparents who are all old fashioned and think you shouldn't nurse past 6 months old. I would answer honestly, since I didn't want them to think I was ashamed that I was still nursing. I figured I could help educate them about the benefits of breastfeeding beyond what they were used to.

Now that it's the holiday season we have been seeing a lot of family, and I am getting a lot of questions about when I will be done nursing or if I am still nursing. My in-laws who we see about once a month ask me every single time if I am still nursing my youngest. I'm not sure if it's just them being curious/starting conversation or what. I'm also getting the same question from other extended family, I'm thinking they are just curious since a lot of my family/DH family never breastfed.

Did people ask you when you were going to stop nursing or if you are still nursing? How do you respond?
