no one brought us food, but thats mainly because I'm such a picky eater. I have dairy, egg, almond, legume allergies and also a sensitivity to gluten, so most people would have no idea what to make!

We usually give our friends gift certificates to their favorite local take out places, that way they can get what they want.

My church uses the same website! To be honest, almost everyone who signed up asked us what we wanted them to bring! So we were lucky enough to indulge in whatever we were craving (pasta, Boston market, Korean food, Thai, etc.). Our parents constantly brought us food as well. I JUST started cooking again last week, and LO is already 11 weeks old! I was so grateful and definitely appreciated all the food we received. I'm sure the mamas you bring food for will be as well!

Everyone who came to visit the baby within the first month brought us food-- before anyone came, they would call and ask if we needed anything (maybe just to be polite?), but we would take them up on it and ask for food.

We got home cooked meals, take out (Mexican, In-n-Out, Portillo's, El Pollo Loco), and some casseroles to heat up later.

my aunt also brought us a polenta/sausage casserole thing that was to die for.

i usually bring a lasagna or shepherd's pie with a big bag of salad and maybe some cookies.

@buffalove: The website we use suggests adding breakfast, and I think its awesome! Especially because breakfast foods always sound good to me when I'm awake at strange hours, even if nothing else does. I'll have to follow your lead and start throwing in a loaf of banana bread or some muffins!

We received so many meals from family and friends, it was fantastic!! My mom brought chicken parmesan with pasta to eat one night and sub rolls to make chicken parm subs with the leftovers later in the week....genius! And my sister brought pulled pork - one container to eat and one to freeze (and rolls for both). She also made fresh blueberry muffins a couple times which was clutch....no one remembers breakfast.

I always bring food to new mamas as my gift. I bring chicken enchiladas (or veggie & black bean for vegetarian friends) with a side of chips & salsa and dessert (brownies, cookies, whatever). I pack everything in throw away containers and leave instructions for eating or freezing. Recently I've also added banana bread or muffins because it was so nice having a breakfast option in those early days!

We have received pizza from our favorite place, pot roast, enchilada casserole, roasted chicken + veggies, and a really awesome cookie pie dessert (great for a quick boost when starving and no time to reheat real food!)

I have requested specifically from my fam : fruit, salad, sandwiches. As someone said, you get a lot of hearty meals and I'm not used to eating like that + can't get out to get fresh produce (c-section here -- no driving yet...) so that's what i would bring someone! And the roasted chicken on the salads is my favorite meal right now so maybe combo those.

Our group of friends uses MealTrain.com, so we had a good 3 weeks of meals after baby. I'm actually bringing dinner to my friend tonight who had her 2nd baby 2 weeks ago. We brought them takeout last Friday (Outback Steakhouse) and tonight I have mojo pork in the crockpot and will bring tortillas, bean, rice, cheese, etc. I'll also bring some cookies.

Almost none of our friends do pasta dishes because so many babies have issues with dairy. I don't think we had even one lasagna. There was a roasted chicken, an oven baked ham, a few takeouts, steak, soups, etc. We had soooo much food.

Agreed: after eating cheesy, carby casseroles and pastas that people love to bring, I think a big salad or soup/salad combo is the very best thing in the world. I'm not a veggie lover, but after a few days without or with very few, I absolutely crave them, so it was great when someone brought that.

My mom made us dinner one night, my sister went grocery shopping for us and friends supplied us with meals for about 2 weeks. It was amazing. I just started a meal train for a friend who is due in April.

The Slow Cooker Revolution cookbook has lots of ideas that freeze up well and are super easy to prepare (and tasty). It works pretty much all from whole ingredients and is one of the only cookbooks geared towards the casual cook that I find myself using. I've had to put a lot of my fancier and prep-heavy cooking on hold since Lowly was born so that I can spend more time with her (and not overload her with time in the kitchen, though she does quite like short spurts), so I needed more options that didn't require hours and hours of work. I checked it out from the library. I asked for meals as shower gifts, but we didn't get much; ironically my shower took place while I was at the hospital. Mostly we just used things I had prepared and frozen myself ahead of time.

@grizz: It was delicious if I do say so myself! I kept some for me and DH!

Another good one is Beef Stroganoff over rice. Or a roast beef made in the crockpot or a pork roast in the crock pot. So yummy!

That's awesome!

We didn't get any meal, =( In the end it wouldn't have really mattered since I ended up having to cut so much out of my diet at 3 weeks pp (that's what I tell myself to feel better about it) BUT it still would've been nice to not have to worry about feeding DH & G.

Only one person brought us food. :( It was a baked ziti with salad. It was so sweet and thoughtful and we really appreciated it. Oh and my mom brought us some food a few times.

ETA: Oh and we recently took a friend some fajitas with tortillas and sour cream. They really enjoyed it!

We got soooo many lasagnas and pastas! So I would say anything except for that!

While I totally appreciated everything everyone brought, the pasta got to be too much.

I recently brought my brother and SIL balsamic chicken with carrots and rice. She was breastfeeding and I wanted to make sure I brought a veggie that wouldn't cause too much gas!

Our church uses the Take Them a Meal website and announces the log-in and registration at church, so all new parents can expect meals for several weeks up to 3 months.
