I brought my baby home from the nicu and took her to the dog park the next day. And then out to breakfast and basically just all around. She was perfectly healthy, I kept her in the moby, and I really don't understand why people don't. I'd never have stayed home for 6 or 8 weeks. Not unless she'd been deathly ill the entire time, or some other kind of very medically fragile.

LO will be here (hopefully) in November, so likely that the only times we'll be out is for doc appts. Maybe for walks, if it's not super cold already. My mom is enforcing the 3 week rule on me staying inside the house w baby, so I probably won't leave the house for any other reason that doc's anyway!

Yep, but it was the opposite for us. SIL couldn't understand why we waited until 6 weeks to take LO out grocery shopping. She kept making comments. We were at a party and I just had to ignore her. Thank goodness we were surrounded by others who had kids so they should understand, so everyone just smiled and laughed.

I took DS to Target when he was 2 days old, following an appointment at his dr's office to get something she recommended. I also took him to a new moms group and a La Leche League meeting when he was a week old. He never got passed around and was in the infant seat or a carrier and I kept him covered. I needed to get out of the house, that is all there is to it. Don't feel guilty!!!

We had DD out to buy her a couple more sleepers when she was 3 weeks old, and an older lady said "oh in my day we didn't take babies out of the house for the first 2 months, I guess things have changed" Hubby and I just nodded at her, super annoying!

Our ped was adamant about not taking him out until he got his 8 week shots. So...it sucks, but we haven't been anywhere yet. One more week to go!! It sucks more too because I am alone 3-5 nights a week so I have to be vigilant about what we need! She said going on walks is perfectly fine, anything else to stay at home. I know some people think its insane to not go anywhere that long, but his health comes first and if he got sick/fever before six weeks it is automatic hospital admission.

I say screw 'em and their unsollicited comments/advice! It's not like you should lock yourself in your home for the first few months of your baby's life! We have been out every day with dd since we got home from the hospital. I know you are keeping your son safe and protecting him from germs, so there's nothing wrong with living a little and taking him out.

Eta: reading through some of the previous posts I guess some drs actually tell you to stay home for awhile! Ours encouraged outings. Just wanted to clarify that we weren't going against drs orders taking dd out.

My doc advised that we take baby for a walk every day from the start and so we just took her out all the time from the beginning. We waited until after her 2 month shots to take her on the subway though.

We've been advised to stay in for a month, obviously not counting essential trips like doctor appointments. I have heard it's good for them to get used to the germs in your house before facing the ones outside. It's hard, though! And most people seem to take them out earlier with no I'll effects! I just don't trust people not to touch the baby.

I only took both boys out for doctor's appointments b/c I was doing the 30-day confinement at home. And took them out as soon as my 30-days was over! I think both times we went to eat steak. LOL! They do say that newborns start to build up their immune system starting at 6 weeks so that's usually a better time to start taking them out; or at least until they get their first shots. I don't blame ppl taking their newborns out b/c it's so stuffy staying at home all the time. I was going batty both times! I was so jealous that my sister and parents (who were visiting) were going shopping every day...without me!

We went out all the time pretty quickly. I was feeling great and I didn't see any reason not to get out. We were actually encouraged by the midwives (they don't use doctors for childbirth here) to get out and about ASAP. You're especially encouraged to go to mommy groups at the Children's Centre and not get isolated, which is awesome!

So far we've taken him out twice and he's not even 5 days old. We asked our pediatrician and he said as long as we're careful about keeping people away and putting on hand sanitizer before we touch him, he didn't see any problem with it.

After his ped appt, we went and had lunch at Panera bread then went to Target to get more hand sanitizer. Then yesterday we took him to Costco to buy groceries. I just keep a blanket draped over the carrier and if anyone tries to touch him they're going to get slapped by me. :) But so far no one has even approached us yet.

I asked our pediatrician about this - she said getting fresh air is great for you and baby. And to cover them up if you go to a store - no strangers touching. We've been out a few times, she's 12 days old today, and haven't had issues w/ comments or people touching. And I make sure to Purell before I pick her up.

I didn't for the first month based on our pediatrician's recommendation. If we needed to run an errand either my husband or I went alone and someone stayed at home. I'm a pretty paranoid FTM so I didn't really see the point of taking him out in public and exposing him to germs if I didn't have to (still feel like this at 6 1/2 months!). That being said- I would never say anything to someone else about it. It's a personal decision.

Oh man. We took M out a ton when she was first born. We NEEDED stuff and I had to make sure we got the right stuff. I couldn't be away from her so....all three of us had to go! Yes, we got some "wow, you are brave!" comments. We actually enjoyed those. Yes, yes we are brave to be out and about with our tiny baby. We did the same thing you did - cover her, didn't let anyone get near her etc and guess what? She didn't get sick! :)

We took LO out within the first week of her birth. It’s super easy to take newborns out since they usually just sleep haha. No one gave us a hard time or questioned us; but my husband has told me I have perfected the “bitch eye” so there’s that. A few women did say they thought it was “awesome” that we were getting out and about and enjoying ourselves so quickly.

Our ped just said to use common sense; but placed no restrictions on taking her out. I could not have stayed inside with LO for 6 weeks; I would have gone batty.

I took LO everywhere right from the start. BRU, Church, the store, out to dinner, etc. She would sleep the whole time and was always covered with a blanket. I do not think you are doing anything wrong at all. Don't let people judge your mommy skills....people will always have something to say. As a mom you eventually need to learn to tune them out because they don't stop making comments...ever!

We only took L out for doctor's appointments until she was about a month old, but that's because Korean culture is pretty strict about taking out newborns and my mom would've flipped if I went anywhere :)

I find it so annoying when completely random strangers think it's welcomed/appropriate to tell you how to raise your child. Just the other day, some random lady in the elevator was like, "OMG that's what your baby is dressed in?! She must be freezing!" Umm... it was like 65 degrees, she was in a hooded fleece jacket, and she had on socks. What should she be in, a snowsuit? Geez.
