So apparently this is a common FIL thing! Mine has been campaigning to babysit, but I'm going to go ahead and file that under 'Never happening'.

Oh my gosh, yes!

I have a 4 week old, and were having birthday cake with whipped cream on it on the weekend, and my FIL took a big scoop of it on his finger and said he was going to let her taste it. I kinda crapped my pants a little, and told him absolutely not. Her stomach can't handle cow's milk and sugar at not even a month old, sorry.

So then he said that when he baby sits her and mom's not watching she can have whatever she wants. Annnnnnd that's why they won't be allowed unsupervised visits until they can follow my rules (and quite frankly some common sense).

Only the inlaws have - they gave LO some ice cream as soon as I left the room, came back and LO was spitting it out and apparently "she grabbed it and fed it to herself" - yeah because a 3 month old can do that! They try to sneak her biscuits and sweet things when they don't think I'm looking which is one of the reasons why they don't babysit. LO is 11 months old and I'm getting more relaxed but I don't see why they need to only feed her sweet foods!

...I gave a friend's 11 month old a piece of fruit once (some type of melon, I think). Granted, the kid was STARING at me eating it and making chewing motions, so I asked my friend if it was ok if I gave her some and she said yes. Pretty sure the kid ate more than I did, lol.

Besides that one time, its NEVER crossed my mind to give a baby any kind of food, especially one so young. ESPECIALLY without asking. Yikes.

DH's Gram gave E three chocolate chip cookies on our beach trip this year. He was 10.5 months old so it wasn't the worst thing except it was 3 of them (and not those little mini ones, either) and we hadn't given him any sweets yet...we wanted his birthday cake to be the first!

If it was any other family member I would have pitched a fit but she's pretty much untouchable. I had to grit my teeth and smile.

I can't imagine anyone trying to give a three month old anything but BM or formula though! Way too young!

Dude... Your inlaws... all I can say is you're a saint!!

My inlaws always joke that they're going to feed him pizza, cookies, etc. it's either that or I get to hear about how I should give him formula. Or quips about my kitchen being a mess. (It's not a mess). Sigh. If they actually tried to feed him, I'd lose it.

@grizz: I would go crazy! I'm a vegetarian (and we plan on raising our baby as a vegetarian), and we ALWAYS get comments from friends/family about how they are going to feed the baby meat. That's like me telling a religious person that I'm going to expose their child to satanic things (not that I think meat is the devil, haha, it's just the best thing I can think of). So weird!

Thankfully, I have some food allergies, and I might just lie (and say baby has them too) to keep people from freely feeding her/him.

People are the WORST!

@grizz: Yes. Always. MY parents are the worst offenders. They always say they're "pretending" to give her drinks, bread, food, etc. My mom loves to tease her (and everyone's dogs) by putting food and moving it around right up in the face. So she can reach and take a bite if she tried. Even when DH says no, they keep putting stuff to her mouth saying it's "just pretend." My SIL let her taste watermelon and I was okay with a lick, but she kept trying to feed her more and more and teach her to bite (at 4 1/2 months).

@grizz: my MIL asked my LO at 7 weeks old if I'd let her have a taste of whipped cream or anything yet. DH's birthday was this week and she asked me if I was going to give LO, at nearly 10 weeks old, any icing or ice cream. Then when she was near LO she called to me to look and pretended to feed LO some ice cream. Maybe my MIL is related to your FIL!

Um, I've never given LO up long enough for anyone to try, but I think I would flip my s*** if anyone fed my LO ANYTHING that I didn't say she could have. My side would never because they know it's not cool with me but I can definitely see in-laws trying. They eat total crap and don't see anything wrong with the little kids eating all that stuff. I just will not let anyone hold her while people are eating. I'm sure they think I'm nuts but I couldn't care less.

@looch: I think it's more of an issue when the baby is only a few weeks old, and it would probably be harmful for the babe to have solids...especially something sugary. DS is 6, now, so I just let people give him whatever...but when he was a baby, I was diligent about not giving him things too soon.

No one has done this to us yet, though my IL's tend to be a little eager and will give her pieces of food even though she's not done with what she has already in her mouth. She has 6 teeth - it takes a minute to chew!
What really irks me about so many of these posts are the 'mean mommy' comments. Seriously?! That stuff just really irks me. Setting limits based on what is best for my child isn't always fun, but I certainly don't need my kid learning that it's okay to call me mean when I enforce them.

oh no I am already worried about this and I'm not due till March. Every time we go back home for a weekend to visit, we have lunch with my dad and gran on Sunday before our 3 hour drive back to our house. EVERY TIME I tell them not to feed the dogs. My gran thinks I'm the meanest person ever for it, but I've told them 17490374 times that the driving combined with all the stupid crap they feed them makes them barf. They just don't get it. I will have to really get the point across when it's a real baby. My gran looks right at me and as soon as I look away she does it out of the corner of my eye. Drives me insane.

@looch: maybe I will totally change my mind on this later on, but this is what it is in my family. I don't know that my parents/family would blatantly disregard my wishes, but I also don't know how huge a deal it is going to be to me. Maybe yes, and if there is a food allergy, then YES, but food is always shared at my house.

Not saying people are wrong for being upset...it just doesn't seem as huge of a deal to me. I don't want to spoon feed my child sugar, but a taste seems different than that. And I'm honestly not trying to provoke an argument....promise!

@Bookish: I held it together because it was MIL's birthday, but he was on thin ice. I went in another room to nurse C, and he told me to make sure I shut the door because he 'didnt need to see any of that.' I then heard him remark to DH that it was time for me to wean, because bf'ing a baby this old is nasty. So let me get this straight: breastmilk = nasty but icing is good? umm, ok. These people are going to drive me to drink.

You know, for some people, offering food is an expression of love. I know it is for my parents. My father would absolutely give his life for my son, so when he gives him somethig to eat, it's an expression of that.

I know it's not easy when it's sugary junk, but let's try to think of it from their perspectives too! It might help us come up with better ways to deal with it.

Gahh they're doing that to you already?! I've had people tell me to put cereal in her bottle, but no one's actually tried anything. I'd lose it.
