@MsLipGloss: Thanks so much for the suggestions. I called my OB's office today and they told me to see my primary care physician. But I would feel more comfortable taking something my OB recommends that is safe. I tried caffeine for the first time today and it definitely helped. I'm used to headaches. Had them my whole life, but nothing like the one I've had this week.

@MrsKC: Definitely call your OB and get a stronger medication. There are several that are safe for pregnancy, and s/he can prescribe one based on your symptoms.

In the meantime, icepacks at the base of your neck (just above your shoulders) and/or across your forehead may help. You may also try caffeine (if you haven't alrady), as it is a vasoconstrictor and may help to alleviate some of the pressure in your head. ((hugs))

What are your ladies suggestions for dealing with these headaches? I'm going on day 5 of a headache. Tylenol didn't work. I don't know what else to do. A few nights it was so bad I woke up in the middle of the night to my head pounding. I can't take it anymore.

@ArtBee: had an appointment with the Neuro today, and my new *to try* cocktail is a Benadryl with a Fioricet to see if the combo will get rid of the migraine (and let me sleep through the night). Both my OB and my Neuro were wary on the Imitrex, which was enough for me to put it in the *definitely not* category.

One thing I did learn about today was *rebound* headaches . . . like from taking extra strength Tylenol daily for a couple of weeks (or other medications, as rebound is not limited to Tylenol) which could cause the very headaches I was trying to prevent. >.<

@MsLipGloss: My OB said imitrex was ok for pregnancy, but my neuro said no, and since it doesn't work for me anyway I stayed away from it. I hated getting conflicting opinions all the time! Hope you find something to help!

@mediagirl: So sweet of you to think of me! I tried all sorts of non med things. Literally spent thousands of dollars on neurofeedback therapy. It worked for a while before I was pregnant, but when I was pregnant there was just no stopping the migraines. And I tried biofeedback therapy, also didn't work. Hoping nerve stimulation does the trick next time around!

@Mrs. Jacks: Glad you had a long time without them! I had such bad migraines in the beginning that I thought maybe I don't want to be pregnant ever again. Which makes me really sad because I loved having a baby in my belly and having my LO. But I was seriously considering adoption, I can't watch LO with constant migraines. Before it wasn't as big of a deal becauase I could just lay on the couch all day. Now that I recently had surgery, I'm willing to try again in hopes that it will help.

My migraines went away after the first trimester. They stayed away until 15 months post partum. Now they are pretty bad again (maybe even worse and more frequent than before). It's enough to make you want to be pregnant again. (Not really, but kinda!)

@artbee: I was just scanning a website ( http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/259724-overview#aw2aab6b5 ) due to some weird pain I'm having in my arm right now and came across this. Made me think of you and this post:

Will changes in headache patterns occur during pregnancy?
For most women, headaches remain unchanged during pregnancy. Some women improve, but some may worsen. Because migraines have a hormonal component, many women's migraines improve with increasing estrogen levels, such as those that occur during pregnancy. For women whose conditions remain unchanged or worsen, treatment options are limited, especially in the first trimester. Some clinicians suggest acetaminophen, narcotics, and antiemetics. Nonpharmacologic treatments include relaxation strategies, eliminating stressors, and a good exercise program. These should first be attempted before pharmacologic therapy.[1, 2]

I had some optic migraines during pregnancy, but the painful headache migraines went away almost completely. I never had particularly bad migraines to begin with though, so pre-pregnancy they were more of an annoyance than anything else.

I had migraines at the very beginning, and then they slacked off until two weeks ago. Lately, I have had one every day for just over two weeks (I see a neurologist this afternoon), but it has really been a struggle. I have tried Fiorcet, which can take the edge off the big ones, but nothing gets rid of the migraine completely. The only thing that has ever worked for me has been Imitrex injections. Currently, I wake up around 1:30/2:00 a.m. with a migraine, get an icepack and try to relax and go back to sleep, only to have the alarm go off just after falling back to sleep. *Fingers crossed* that this will slack off soon and/or that the neuro has a magic trick (or two!) up his sleeve.

I usually get 3-4 a year, very debilitating, I am non-functional for the rest of that day until I have a full night's sleep, even the next day I feel hungover. Major stresses bring them on.

During pregnancy I had very few headaches of any sort until my last 2 months, for those last few weeks any big activity or stress would bring on a very minor migraine- I was able to catch most of them very early with Tylenol (which never works for me when I'm not pregnant).

So far 3 months out I've only had a couple very minor headaches.

@Rachel: you should talk to your doctor about drugs that are safe. I took fiorcet which is a mix of tylenol and caffeine. If it was crazy bad I took Vicodin. And if it was crazy crazy bad I went to the er and they gave me a cocktail of stuff.

I get migraines from extreme weather changes and some food/drink triggers - I'm actually terrified that they'll get worse during pregnancy and I won't be able to kill them with Relpax.

I haven't had a migraine since I have been pregnant, I usually have them triggered by extreme weather changes, and they haven't effected me at all the past 8 1/2 months, it has been heaven. I hope that this trend continues during breastfeeding!

I've had migraines my whole life. I often heard that pregnancy helps to get rid of them and had been looking forward to this for a long time. I thought I might be one of those lucky ones that never had any migraines after getting pregnant and having a baby.

Boy was I wrong! I was stuck on the couch with horrible migraines until half way through my second trimester. I had to go to the ER every other weekend because they were just too bad. Later in pregnancy I barely got any though. It was awesome.

But then after LO came and my milk dried up, they came back with a vengeance. Instead of a migraine maybe once a week give or take some, I had them daily. Sadly, pregnancy wasn't my cure.

Hoping it helps some of you girls though!
