DH stayed with us the first night, but I sent him home the 2nd night. We hadn't slept for days and didn't have family to help out, so I thought he should rest and have the chance to get things squared away at home. This time we'll have family in town to help out and take care of DS, so I'm sure he'll stay the whole time if I want. It helps that we're ~10 minutes from the hospital.

Yes, he stayed but he would go home for a few hours every day to bathe, feed the dogs, go get me food. He did it when either my mom or sister were with me so I wasn't alone. By the 3rd and 4th day I could move around more after my c sections. We ended up staying a long time because DS1 ran a fever and DS2 had jaundice.

He stayed the whole time, I think he made a couple trips home but came right back. We were at the hospital for 5 nights. I would like him to stay if we have another especially if I have another c section but we'd have to figure out what's best for all of us including our son.

Yes to both times! First time DD went straight to NICU but DH was still there to keep me company and to wheel me up to see her. Second time my awesome inlaws took DD1 to their house so DH and my mom could be with me. I wasn't in the hospital for that long though, 48 hrs and I was home!

With DS1, DH stayed the whole time (5 days, 4 nights). I don't think he left the entire time.

With DS2, DH and my mom alternated staying. DH is a horrific snorer and kept me up most of the time when I had DS1! Lol!!!

DH stayed the whole time for DD1 - minus some quick breaks to get food, shower, whatnot when we had visitors.

For DD2 - we had hoped to have DH go home for night #2 (I'm GBS+) and stay with DD1 - but now that I know there will be no nursery I am worried about sending him home.

Yes, and I am so grateful we could do that. Originally I was supposed to deliver at a NYC hospital with no guarantee that he could room in. (NYC hospitals have waiting lists for private rooms, and if you get off the list you have to spend about $1,000 per night out of pocket for the privilege of keeping your family together when you have a new baby.) I had a lot of issues with the hospital -- lack of rooming in was only one of them -- so I switched hospitals and providers during my pregnancy.

My son had a wicked latch, and breastfeeding was really painful. My husband helped me spoon feed our son in the middle of the night when we were in the hospital together. I don't know what I would have done without his support (and his extra two hands!).

@Cherrybee: I think this is the rule at our hospital too. Spouses can stay later than guests but they are not allowed to stay the night.

@Pumuckl: same! I liked it that way, really. I would turn on the lights for nursing, talk to the nurses, look at my baby.....it was a special time. I could have done all of that with him in the room, but I preferred for him to be well rested so he could be a big help during the day.

Yes with DD1, both nights, even though he technically wasn't supposed to as we had shared rooms and partners are not meant to stay overnight. Our midwives didn't care - the only thing is that adults aren't allowed to bed share (unsanitary and unsafe apparently) and they frown upon the partner laying down on the bed whilst the mum sits in a chair, so DH slept in a chair both nights and then went home for a few hours during the day to shower and nap. I had to stay two nights because of an issue with my catheter from the epidural.

With DD2, we were home with our baby eight hours after we'd arrived at the hospital in labour. The hospital was happy to discharge after four hours if mum and baby were healthy and it was mum's wishes, so that's what we did. Arrived at 4:00 am, left by 12:15 pm the same day, so it wasn't an issue. Planning to do the same with baby #3.

Yes, for both girls.

I don't agree with a lot of my hospital's baby friendly policies (though they have loosened up in recent years) but I really appreciated the fact that they turned all of their rooms into singles with pull out couches for the partners.

Hubs stayed both nights both times. When our second LO was born our older daughter had a sleepover weekend at her BFF's house and didn't miss us a bit. But they regularly do sleepovers so it wasn't out of the ordinary for her.

For #1, she was born in the afternoon. After I got settled in, he left for a few hours to shower, clean up, etx. He came back and stayed the night. We were discharged the next afternoon.

With #2, she was born in the evening. He waited until I got settled in the room, but then went home for the night around 9. I didn't see any point in having him stay and sleep on a gold down chair when he could have a good sleep at home with #1. We have all our family in town, so we could have had someone stay with #1, but we both wanted him home. Worked well for us!

I was in the hospital 4 or 5 nights with preterm labor, he didn't stay any. For the birth of DD yes he stayed with us 2 night. For DS, no, DH actually got sick and We both decided it was best if he didn't. It sucked cause I really needed him. The Dr even kept me and DS an extra night, 3 total, to keep us away from the germs.

LO3 - we'll see, I'm inclined to say he will stay for most of the day but will go back home to the kids at night. I think I'll be OK overnight and could always call my mom to help.
