I just had my membranes swept about 2.5 -3 hours ago. OB used quite a bit of pressure, very very sore/uncomfy. I was already maybe 2-3 cm dilated so hoping it gets things moving. Straight after we left we went for a bit of shopping/walking just to get myself active, and i'm having some light spotting/pink discharge and some mild crampy contractions at the moment. Hope this is it!

Just an update. My membranes were swept this afternoon, about 3.5 hours ago. It wasn't that terrible, definitely not pleasant, but it was short! I'm a little crampy, had a couple of irregular contractions, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

@Miss Sarah: Well, I went this morning. He is a big fan of membrane sweeps but he couldn't do one bc I am not dilated at all :/ So I go back in one week! He doesn't want to set up an induction unless I have some dilation so I just have to wait ... Womp womp. Good luck tomorrow!!

@Miss Sarah: so exciting that you're this close to meeting your LO!

I had my membranes swept at 39+6 b/c I was scheduled for induction on my DD but not excited about pitocin. I did have contractions & bloody show that night, but my contractions didn't progress. On my actual DD they got too busy to take me, but LO definitely dropped further b/c I felt like she was pressing on my cervix. By 4am the following morning (so 36hrs after sweep) my water broke. It still took another 23hrs to finally deliver my sweetheart, but perhaps the sweep helped me not need pitocin. Overall, it wasn't that painful & so worth a shot, I say!

Went to my Dr appt at 40w2d...was 3cm and 80% effaced (had been that for a week)... Membranes stripped around 2pm...went into labor at 1am that night.

Good luck!

ETA: I had them stripped at 39w with no luck - but it was just a mild one - I noticed no discomfort. at my 40w2d appt I told her she could be aggressive with it (was scheduling an induction anyways - so why not) - it was more intense - not pain just pressure - mild spotting afterwards.

I'm having mine swept at 37+2 (next Tuesday) because I have an RCS scheduled for 37+5. Really hoping for a VBAC but my doc said if my body isn't ready it won't do anything. I'm already 1cm and 50% effaced. Fingers crossed!

I went into labor with my second LO within a few hours of having my membranes swept at 39+6! My dr did say that my membranes had already "separated" so I may have been pretty close to labor already but it definitely pushed me over the edge!

@Miss Sarah: it's really not that bad! And really it's just stirring things up to release the prostaglandins that help start labor.

@wrkbrk: Mostly BH contractions... Just the tightening. But last night and a couple of times today, they were more painful (like menstrual cramps). But due to my nausea, I wasn't eating/drinking as much as I should have. So imagine that contributed to them!

I was 41 weeks and started having back labor nearly within the hour. I sort of wonder if my labor would have been shorter (48 hours) without stripping the membranes. Perhaps my body really wasn't ready. Who knows.

My OB did a sweep at 40+1 and I was already 4-5cm dilated but I still didn't go into labour until 40+5. Had I not had GD I wouldn't have done a sweep and would've probably waited it out another week.

@sapphire: Good point. I just didn't know if it was worth doing if I ended up making progress on my own this week. I suppose I'm just curious how successful it has been for others. But you're totally right, the worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't work.

I was 40w2d when mine were stripped. I was only 1/50% at that appt at 3pm. Contractions started by 5pm, definitely in labor by 8-9pm, at the hospital by 1am and delivered in the evening. Definitely worked for me- and I avoided the induction I otherwise would have been scheduled for at 41w0d.

Also why deliberate? There's really no down side as long as it isn't done too early! I would have had it done at 39w but I wasn't dilated yet for it to be possible.

I had it done three times: at 38, 39, and 40 weeks. Nothing happened the first two times other than some mild spotting and a TINY bit of cramping. I also made sure to walk a bunch afterwards because I really was afraid of induction and really wanted to go into labor. And it was not painful, not really more painful than a Pap smear.

The final time I had some heavier spotting and then went into labor 24ish hours later and my daughter was born at 40 weeks 1 day.

My midwife called it "stirring the pot" :silly:

I had it at 39wks (a Friday morning), and I'm not sure if it did anything. I felt crampy and spotted a little after. I lost my mucus plug on Sunday night, contractions started early Tuesday morning, and he was born early Wednesday afternoon.
