@Anagram: I used the birth canal answer for DS which satisfied him for a while.

He's almost 5 and likes to cuddle my stomach and says it's because it was where he grew. The other night we were talking about my cousins new baby and saying the doctor helped get the baby out and she came through the birth canal was not good enough. He then declared babies get into your tummy through your mouth so that is how they get out!

I had a c section, and have a photo of the moment they pulled my son out - the doctor holding him up, blood everywhere - that my son has seen. So the other day he said “Hey Mom, how many doctors were in the room when I was born?”

@turquoisemama: 😂
My (at the time) 2.5yo told my DAD that I have “big big nipples” out of the blue as he was pouring his morning coffee. I was so embarrassed I was stammering about how they aren’t that big they are just bigger than his so he says they are big. My dad just nodded and walked away.

I’m 30 weeks pregnant and I’ve explained to my 3 yo that the baby will come out mommy’s vagina just like she did when she was in my tummy. We’ve looked at pictures of when I was pregnant with her too. But the embarrassing part is when she randomly announces that the baby will come out of mommy’s “fuzzy vagina”...she added the fuzzy part all on her own.

Man, I’ve gotten of really easy on this topic, lol. I told DS that both he and DD grew in my tummy and then the dr helped take them out (I had a c-section). He was fine with that and then said “Maddy (our dog) grew in your tummy too, right? 😂

My son is almost four, and we recently (like last weekend) told him about my pregnancy. I found an awesome big brother/sister book called Babies Don't Eat Pizza which is geared towards preschoolers instead of toddlers. It explains what a uterus is and shows a drawing of a baby and a placenta.

Anyway, I showed him some ultrasound images from my appointment on Tuesday. The next morning he asked me if the doctor had taken the babies out of my belly to take the pictures!

LO has had lots of questions lately but we are just focusing on mommy will go to the hospital and the doctor will help the baby come out. He’s been satisfied with that so far.

My lo is 5 and knows that there are two options for birth: vagina or “a little cut” (c-section) and knows I had a c-section. (We haven’t gotten into adoption yet)

She loves to super randomly, *loudly* inform everyone around us her preference for her future birthing. Like in the line at target, out of the blue: “yeah...I think I’ll have babies out my vagina. I don’t want a little cut.” :silly: well, ok then.

My 4.5 year old has asked me and I told her, "the baby comes out the birth canal". And she asked, "what's the birth canal?" And I said "the place where the baby comes out". And she seemed satisfied with that circular logic.

I don't mind telling her all the details, but another time she asked me to tell her the story of when she was born, and I mentioned that my tummy was hurting very bad and that's how I knew I had to go to the hospital. And she became fixated on the pain part and even started crying saying she never wants a baby because she doesn't want a hurt tummy. She woke up crying IN THE NIGHT about it, so I feel like I've traumatized her enough for now. I'll save the tearing vagina stories for later.

@nana87: DS1 is 5 and his daycare friend just became a big brother on Wednesday. He knows that you need an egg and a seed in order to grow a baby in mommy's tummy so I got the question last night as to how the seed finds the egg. I think I blacked out b/c I have no idea how I answered him!

@BadgerMom: lol!! I guess it makes sense? preschooler-logic!

@birdofafeather: I wish I wasn't embarassed! I'm trying so hard to be sex-positive in my parenting and open, but even with my parents being pretty hippy-ish I was still a bit of a prude!

@Foodnerd81: oh she def plays that she has a baby inside her tummy too!

@looch: lol!

@snowjewelz: that's good!

@Mrsbells: yeah I forgot to warn her teachers today about our convo, in case she says "vagina" again at inopportune moments! Though we do say "vagina" when talking about bodies anyway (though "vulva" would be more correct...), I didn't used to and she called both her front and back her "butt" for the longest time haha. I didn't explain about c-sections to her since that seemed like more info than she needed, since she asked about how she and lo2 were born, but next time she asks!

@Chuckles: lol! that would have been a good strategy, to make her guess! I love listening to her thought process!

@nana87: I had DS when DD was 4.5 so yes we had a lot of questions. She is still at the age (5) where she has no filter. so I wouldnt say the word vagina to her because she would yell it out randomly. since i had c-sections twice it was easy to tell her that the doctor cuts open my tummy and takes the baby out. she got to see my scar and everything.

We've been talking about babies a lot lately with lo1, who'll be 4 in a couple months, because one of her daycare friends just became a big sister. Cue this adorable/awkward question:

"Mama how did [lo2's name] come out of your tummy? Did she come out of your mouth?"

:shocked: :silly: :grin:

I wasn't expecting that at this age! I kind of giggled (my parents were over, adding to the awkwardness) and then explained that she came out of my vagina, but because I had laughed she then thought I was joking and I had to say "no, really..." which led to saying the word "vagina" in front of my parents way more than I ever wanted to say in my life :wink: Luckily she hasn't asked yet how one GETS a baby in her tummy, but I need to have an answered prepared better since she's so curious!

Have you had the(/portions of the) birds and bees talk yet with your kiddos? Did they ask anything hilarious? Were you super awkward?
