It sent me leaning over to the non-med camp. I didn't want Pitocin unless absolutely necessary either after watching it. Before, I had no idea what that was. It also got me researching a lot so I could make some informed decisions when the time came.

definitely not. That documentary and the entire Ina May farm universe pretend like they don't hand select women; and then they present their birth stories as "the norm". There is a reason why birthing isn't the number one killer anymore of women in developed countries; and it isn't because doctors and medical personnel are all out for themselves.

I had already wanted a med-free birth (what I had planned with DS). It did, however, open up my knowledge on options of vbac and homebirth, and DEFINITELY affirmed how I already felt about hospital birthing.

I know many have said it's one-sided, but I have seen many a one-sided documentaries and most NEVER show approval in any instance for what they are "opposing". I think BOBB did a really good job of laying out the very real, very sad facts of our maternal healthcare here and showing how great medical technology can be when truly needed (since Abby had a cesarean and both Ricki and her expressed gratitude for it).

From watching it I began researching quite a bit around U.S. birth stats and man was I soberly surprised at how bad we really do birth! Even worse, out of my friends and I that have had children over the last year it's been proven in our group. =(

I know I did transfer from my planned hbac but I still will never PLAN a hospital birth again.... I just can't subject myself to the risk of their statistics without some kind of medical necessity that proves I need to..... basically like any other intervention for me, the benefit needs to outweigh the risks.

It's really interesting watching these documentaries, from what I gather, birthing in NZ is really different to the US. Maybe part of it is our free public health system, but the majority of women here have midwife births in birthing centres, with only high-risk cases having hospital transfers. It's not to say that you can't give birth in a hospital (or elect for induction, c-section, etc) but birthing centres definitely seem more of a mainstream concept here - please correct me if I'm wrong!

I also didn't even finish the movie..interesting but I don't care so much about "going natural," I wanted the epidural. No interest in feeling her come out!!

That said, I labored naturally to 10 cm & a +3 station (pre-crowning) not by choice before I got the epi.

I just watched it and as a FTM it had a little bit of a shock factor for me about the cesarean rates in the U.S. especially bc i am very anti c-section unless absolutely necessary. Altho it made me want to research more into ways to be strong about what I want for my birth if I were to run into a situation I wasn't comfortable with. I can totally see how inductions and sections happen more frequently today bc we are an instant gratification driven society. I dont want to fall victim to that when it comes to delivering my baby.

I voted other, I have always wanted a birth center birth if not a home birth so it didn't really change my view. I watched it with my husband though and it helped him to understand my point of view and be on board. He really didn't have a strong opinion before watching it though and his mom leans a little more crunchy in that realm anyway.

No, because I already had a preference and knew most of the info. I also watched "More Business of Being Born," which I think was more balanced than the official documentary (it showed lots of extra footage on all options/experiences).

At this point, I only get nervous for people who *only* watch one documentary, or don't do any research at all. Most women I know IRL go in blind, or with only a very limited understanding of the process. I find that pretty amazing, given the importance of the whole experience.

My sister actually makes fun of me for reading so many books and researching so much, haha! As if asking too many questions will make birth too scary to endure. I wish more women were interested in learning about it...then maybe birth would be a better/safer experience in general, and we'd all be better off.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I do agree! While pregnant I did fall into the belief that doctors were the bad guys who just wanted to cut you open and hospitals were the enemy... I was so mad when I had to be transferred to the hospital - and I had the BEST experience possible. Even my mom, having given birth six times, said it was the best experience she's ever had. I loved my doctor and my nurses - they were SO amazing. And now I totally don't think like that anymore. However I DO believe it varies from hospital to hospital and OB to OB.

I took a Biology of Women class a year before I got pregnant and that is what changed my life. The class was taught by a doula and as a 21-year-old who had never had an interest in that type of stuff it was VERY eye opening. I just figured you follow whatever the doctor says and is standard. The professor recommended watching this documentary and so I voted somewhat because it really reinforced what I was learning at the time. I also watched Pregnant in America and liked that as well (though definitely very one-sided). Based on all those resources I spent a significant amount of time researching and deciding why I wanted to birth naturally.

I'm glad I did. I guess I wouldn't say it changed my birth preferences - because at that point I didn't have any - but it did influence them.

I think it is very easy for that documentary to change your birth preferences if you haven't given birth before.

For me, it did absolutely. But then, after having a baby, I thought to myself "what the hell was I thinking?" LOL

Documentaries are so idealistic and the people who make them are so passionate, it is easy to get caught up.

After experiencing birth first hand I now totally believe the doctors were on my side, and am no long skeptical.

Not at all. I am still giving birth in a hospital and I'm still open to pain meds. I didn't want an induction or a c-section (if possible) even before watching the movie. But it did make me more aware that those things can happen if the doctor wants to rush through things. Thankfully, I go to a combination practice with two doctors and two midwives, so it's not like one of them can't go home if things are taking too long. Whoever's on call when I push is who delivers my baby.

I thought it was an interesting watch, but definitely knew going in that it was going to be one-sided. I think it gave good perspective into the home-birthing option, but that it didn't accurately portray what's possible with a hospital birth. I always knew I would give birth in a hospital and I think if you have a plan and are prepared, then you can have any kind of birth experience you want in a hospital setting.

The first time I watched it I found it a little too granola. But it definetely got the wheels turning for me, and I watched it again while I was pregnant and it made more of an impression. Coupled with a 'natural birth methods' pre-natal class and we decided to go unmedicated.

It made me consider having a home birth...until I actually got pregnant. The way things ended up going it's a damn good thing I changed my mind...I had a massive post-partum hemorrhage...they got the bleeding stopped super fast (after I'd lost almost half a gallon), but if I'd been at home...we're 20 minutes from the hospital...

Anyway, I thought it was an interesting watch.

I didn't know *anything* about childbirth or why people even care about having natural labor, so I did find it interesting to at least see that other perspective. I also come from a family of doctors including an OB, so had never been exposed to the 'non-medical' perspective before. In that way, seeing a biased perspective from the other side was helpful. It did make me feel I should think through decisions about being induced, etc. and be sure it's medically necessary and not just convenient or because the bed is needed by someone else. I'm much more inclined to go natural now than I was before, but definitely in a hospital with a midwife.
