I was completely unable to work out during most of my pregnancy b/c I had pretty severe morning sickness for all 9 months. I did work some yoga back in at the end. I still lost the weight pretty quickly, and now 12 months PP I'm finally finding the time to work out regularly again. Basically I jog with the stroller over to DD's daycare in the evening, and then we jog back home. In my case, I feel like working out during pregnancy had nothing to do with my ability to lose weight (easy) and get back in shape (hard, due to scheduling constraints) after pregnancy.

I did a lot of walking (and I jogged until about 25 weeks) and yoga during pregnancy, until I went on bed rest. After I came off bed rest at 36 weeks, I started walking and yoga again. I think it helped with weight gain during pregnancy, but I don't know that it helped me bounce back post pregnancy. I had a c-section, and was still tender in my abdomen until about 3 months, and didn't get the ok to seriously work out again until the abdominal tenderness faded. By then I had lost most of the baby weight and then an extra 7lbs or so through BFing and not having time to eat a solid meal anymore, but I was still far from being "in shape" at that point.

I worked out and I got a lot of comments that from behind you couldn't tell I was pregnant. Honestly I was a decent amount weaker than before pregnancy but I think maintaining some arm/leg/tummy tone helped both during and after pregnancy. I did a lot of cardio too though and started running 3 weeks after birth. While I'm glad I did cardio during pregnancy and I think it helped I think that took me longer to build back up even though I tried to maintain it during pregnancy. I just didn't want to get too winded or too high of a heartrate during pregnancy so cardio was more limited.

I'm not a 'toned' person, but working out really helped me to maintain my fitness to the extent that I could. It also just felt great. It made it much easier to just go on being active as soon as I felt up to it after she was born.

I agree with @blackbird 100%. I'm 39 weeks and still crossfitting and while I don't know what it will mean for my post-baby body, I do know that muscle mass burns more calories than fat, and I've worked hard to maintain my muscle mass.

Also, I've been fortunate to have a very easy pregnancy and I honestly believe a lot of that is due to staying active. I feel amazing while I'm at the gym and it keeps me very confident in my body's abilities which, I think, will be hugely important for L&D.

Stick with it....you won't regret it!

I walked an jogged lightly on the treadmill for 45-60mins everyday (on a high incline) of my 3rd trimester. I think that's why my legs didn't change at all and they didn't gain an ounce. I seriously don't have to worry about my lower body at all pP.

Stick with it ralyrah! It's so given me the mental ability to hang in there. I figure I'm used to digging deep to stick with a work out and it helps me hang in there :) try a back brace-it helped a lot!

Difficult question for me to answer. I did workout throughout. I was a runner before and I had to stop running a little over halfway through, but I still did cardio. I did very little weight lifting during pregnancy (but really didn't in the months leading up either). I was surprised by how much fat I had left on me after I had the baby since everyone told me (and I myself thought) I was "all belly". The fact that my pre-preg jeans didn't even go ABOVE MY KNEES at 6 weeks pp begged to differ. The good news is that I did lose all the weight by 4 mo pp and am actually 6-8 lb lighter now than I was pre-preg (8mo pp). I started back running at 6 weeks post-partum and I started the aforementioned crossfit 3 months ago which toned me up a bit. I think it does help you "bounce back", but I think it also helps to already have a routine of exercising that you can get back into once baby is here :)

@blackbird: Thanks! I have been keeping up with my weight training but have been slacking lately when it comes to cardio. The bigger I get, the harder it gets!

I worked out through my whole pregnancy but lifting weights has helped me maintain a toned appearance and strength (which has made pregnancy easier). Cardio will help strip the weight off but I would be really surprised if I look real flabby afterwards. I don't think one or the other is the way to go-they each have different uses and you need both! I haven't had the baby yet, but all the Crossfit mamas I know bounce back really fast!
