We told our parents at Thanksgiving, our close family at Christmas, our close friends through phone calls at the official 12 weeks, after our NT scan, so the Facebook announcement were basically for people we don't see all that often, old coworkers, very distant family, etc.</p> <p>I posted pictures of semi-famous half white/half south asian people (Nigel Barker, Christine Merrill, Ben Kingsley, Norah Jones) and asked what they all have in common. I just didn't. We did a lot of telling people about it in person rather than social media. Like it is tempting fate. I feel the same way about a lot of things in pregnancy. I won't buy anything other than new-born necessities before baby comes, won't have a shower and won't be putting details of my pregnancy on FB. </p> <p>God forbid, if something happened to my baby I would not have to share the details with work colleagues from 3 years ago. I figure the less people that know is fine by me. Those close of us do, of course. </p> <p>Also, you would be amazed at how far news travels. People find out anyway as people post pictures of you without asking etc where your bump is visible and then everyone knows anyway. </p> <p>FB pregnancy announcements kind of make my skin crawl. It just kind of seems kind of self congratulatory and smug. </p> <p>I would prefer people found out via a third party picture than my own status. It just seems like I am saying "Look I am pregnant! Now like my status and congratulate me!". </p> <p>Also, its probably a cultural/social thing. I only know one person who announced their pregnancy on FB and we are not from a similar social background. Also, she is the only person I know who has had a baby shower. Neither are things I would do and don't know many friends who would. </p> <p>ETA: I just read everyone else ideas and I hope I don't come across like a judgey freak. Its just not my style.
