Used the waterproof crib mattress under my sheets. My water broke at home for my first, but I was going to the bathroom so that was the best case scenario for water breaking, Lol. The 2nd time was at the hospital so it was a non-issue. At my doula's rec I put down a shower curtain liner under the sheet to protect the mattress maybe the day before I ended up going into labor. They broke my water when I was 10 cm. The second time I put some leftover chucks pads under my side in case but I ended up making it to my induction. We have a mattress protector anyways but the more layers the better - I kept them in there to help with the postpartum sweatfest! They sold us a nice waterproof mattress protector at the store and I was glad knowing it was on. My water broke in the hospital shortly before baby was born both times anyway but it's also nice for spit up, leaking boobs, post partum night sweats.
