In highschool I was the one people would call to watch sick kids and I did a lot of all weekend babysitting. Post college I was a nanny two days a week for years, and watched babies and school agreed kids. The summer I was 13 I had two different families split me for a full time position (I watched one family's 2 kids 3 days per week and the other family's 2 kids 2 days per week). Which looking back I think is INSANE that they trusted me to watch their kids 10 hours/day but I only charged them $3 per hour so I guess they got a good deal considering I kept their kids fed and alive (if totally over saturated in tv). That summer SUCKED though and I quit babysitting and vowed to not have kids. I still occasionally babysat on a weekend or something through hs but it wasn't regular. I haven't watched a child in the last decade, and I hadn't ever watched a baby before.
