That happened to me a few times. But not much blood at all.

Good to see your update that the nurse said not to worry. :)

@lilyofthewest: thanks for the advice! DH definitely puts the needle in like a dart. It's just worrying me because I didn't bleed when we did the PIO injections for my IVF cycle like I'm bleeding now.

I only bled a tiny bit most times, just a small spot, but there was one instance where it bled a bit more. We did ours according to the videos online, and it was definitely higher than I would've thought it would be.

I'm a nurse and I give lots of shots. Books/websites/teachers always say that an intramuscular injection shouldn't bleed afterwards -- but it is a lie.

Most of the shots I give are with tiny 24g needles. I figure about 1/8 of the injections I give bleed a smidge. It isn't that you did it wrong, or gave it in to a vein -- just that you passed through some capillaries on the way.

If you're using a fatter needle, you're more likely to hit a capillary.

One thing that might decrease the chances of having substantial bleeding is encouraging your DH to insert the needle really quickly like a dart. Inserting it more slowly/tentatively can mean that the bevel slices more rather than poking straight in.

I did bleed a few times, a couple of times through the gauze. It happened on both sides, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. There didn't seem to be a pattern.

@tequiero21: the nurse drew circles higher than my behind this time. I don't remember them being so high last time but a different nurse drew them this time.

I did bleed some. A couple of times it went through the gauze. They told me not to worry and make sure I'm not hitting the exact same spot each time (which it doesn't sound like you are since it's only day 2 and I imagine you're alternating sides).
Also, I remember thinking the injections were way higher than I expected as well, but I think that's just where they are. We didn't get circles drawn though! That would've been nice.

I wouldn't worry about it, but if it makes you feel better to ask the nurse then you should! Let us know what she says, I'm curious!

@swedishfish: Good idea. There are also diagrams online for where to inject that I found helpful. Good luck with those PIO injections!!

Hmm...I bled some but didn't totally soak through a gauze pad. You're putting pressure on it right away, right?

I'm on day 2 on my PIO injections. I feel like the nurse may have drawn the circles too high. DH has put the needle in, drawn back to make sure there's no blood and then injected the PIO but a good amount of blood has come out after taking the needle out both days. Did you bleed at all from your PIO injections?
