I've always had female ob-gyn's and I specifically switched to a male once we got pregnant. For whatever reason, I always imagined a male delivering my baby. He is, luckily for me, hands down, the best ob I've ever had.

Personally, I wouldn't want a male provider. I just feel like they couldn't possibly understand as well as another mother could. But as far as the knowing-your-doctor thing, I am actually really good friends with my doula. At first I was worried it might be weird and actually it wasn't planned beforehand. I was texting her when I thought I might be in labor and she came over and stayed with me until the end. Anyway now we talk about my labor/delivers and she really can't remember a lot of details. I think medical professionals and doulas see so many births that they won't really remember you and think about you afterwards.

my medical group has 3 male doctors and 2 female doctors. I picked the female doctor because I thought I would be more comfortable, but I really thought the male doctors had much more "bedside manner". They actively asked me if I had any questions, understood everything - while the female doctors were in and out and were more "routine". It may just have been the practice, but for my second time, I'm sticking with the male doctors.

I chose a female ob-gyn. Thanks for everyones advice and Ill have my male doctor around to ask questions or if i have concerns but not at that intimate -ob/gyn level...Hopefully I made the right choice. And also, Is it bad to change your ob-gyn after 1 or 2 visits? Out of all the doctors in my area, I only had 1 reference for an ob but she isnt available to take patients until Jan. So, I could switch at that point but would that be unprofessional or just plain rude? Whatcha think????

I'm in the minority here I guess, but I would actually see it as a benefit to know him somewhat in a social setting. You won't just be "another patient" to him, and I always like having that connection to make me feel like the doctor really kind of knows me.
I also see a male Ob/gyn and really really like him. He's gentile, and reassuring and very very caring.

I have a female OB who has 2 kids of her own. I wanted my OB to be someone who truly understood what I was going through with pregnancy and birthing.

I've always had mostly female gynecologists. I had to switch to my current practice because my last doctor was GYN only and worked in the town where I work, which is 30 minutes from the hospital where I want to deliver (which is 5 minutes from our house). My current practice has two male OBs and two female midwifes. I don't care either way. I went with an office that was highly recommended -- it was more important to me that they do the best for my pregnancy and my baby, than any hangups I might have. That being said, I haven't yet had an internal exam by either of the male doctors, just my first-visit pelvic with a female midwife. But I've had office visits with both the males so I'm comfortable enough now that I won't care when it does come time for them to be down there.

I had a midwife, but a male OB was also present at my delivery. It didn't make a real difference to me, I'm more interested in feeling like I'm being listened to/taken care of.

As for knowing my doctor in a social setting, I don't think that would bother me either. In fact, now that I'm not pregnant any more I kinda miss my midwife. I'm actually looking forward to my 6 week visit so I can chat with her!

For some reason if I were to meet my Ob and get to know them IRL as an acquaintance, I don't think I'd be too bothered? I guess now that I've delivered in front of one I see them as strictly professional. But believe me, I used to be so squeamish about this stuff.

I went to a practice with 3 OBs, one of whom was male. I mostly saw the females, but saw the male OB twice during my pregnancy. He was on call when I delivered, and even though I stressed about that thought before hand, it was the last thing on my mind for the big day. He did a great job and I'm just amazed by him now!

I agree, i would feel uncomfortable if i knew the person (even distantly) somehow.

Otherwise, it wouldn't matter whether the OB was male/female. Mine was male, and i only cared about getting a doctor who came highly recommended.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable w/knowing my OB outside the office, whether that person was a male or a female. I've always preferred having a female OB -- just felt more comfortable.

i chose an ob office that had both men & women, specifically so i could see the women (a lot in my area are just men). before i was pregnant i was adamant about not have a man ob, and only saw the women early in my pregnancy. now, i could care less. i really trust the men in my practice - they're great doctors. i think it's most important to find someone you respect, trust, and know has your best interests in mind.

I'm having trouble deciding on what ob-gyn to choose.....a female or a male?!!! Please give me your advice fellow bees! I've had a female ob-gyn and a male doctor for everything else. Here's my situation, Im a coach and the male doctor I have been seeing has a daughter on my team. Is that going to be weird if I choose him as my ob-gyn? Should I just choose a female ob? I do like the fact that he is sport oriented so will probably suite me well and he'd be at most the games.....yikes! What do you think? Give me the goods ladies!!!!!
