When we were in Korea, we lived in a 3 bedroom apartment with my aunt and uncle (my dad's siblings)... so it was me + my parents... and then my lil bro too. All four of us... My best friend let her baby co-sleep in their bed for the first two years and now nothing they do will stop a screaming tantrum at bedtime to make her sleep alone. I'm sorry but my husband and I feel that a great marriage includes great spontaneous sex and that must be very difficult to do when you have a 3 year old in your bed! My sister used to come sleep on my floor because she knew that she wouldn't be allowed in their bed. After a couple nights of that, my parents moved us into the same room for about a year. I want to do the same thing when we have kids. I think the bedroom is one of the only places that you can be partners and not just parents. Until I was about four, but if I woke up in the night with a nightmare I was allowed back in with them and my baby sister who slept in a sidecar. After age five or so, if I came into their room at night I was allowed to stay, but on the floor, not in the bed. Once my sister moved into the room with me, I stayed. My husband did not with his parents. He wasn't a fan of it, but gave me the option to decide since I'm the one breastfeeding. I chose not to, but I do occasionally when Cam doesn't sleep well. I didn't want to get locked into him being in our bed every night. For his first month we kept him in a pack and play in our room, but have now moved him into his crib in his room with a monitor. My mom said they couldn't get me to sleep in my own bed until I went to the Dr. and he told me I was a big girl and needed to sleep in my own bed. After that, I guess no issues. And I don't have any sleep issues now at all. We'd co-sleep with our sisters sometimes (4 girls) but not our parents. I had nightmares for awhile when I was little - I was in a house that burnt down (it wasn't a close call for getting out), but I still had nightmares for awhile - even then I wasn't allowed in their bed. I hated being alone and would lay awake for hours trying to fall asleep. When I did wake up from a bad dream I would go get my mom, and she would bring me back to my room and sit with me while I fell back asleep. I think I'm going to try the same strategy with my own kids, so DH and I can keep the bed as our own space. They would let me in their bed if I had a nightmare, or I was allowed to sleep in there with my mom when my dad was out of town on business but that's it. I think it's important that my parents had their own space. Hubs and I will not be co-sleeping with our kids. We could fall asleep in their bed once in a blue moon if we had a nightmare, but I always woke up having been placed back in my own bed. My parents were big on us all having our own beds and that their bed was THEIR space, not OUR space; just like our bed was our space, not their space. I remember when I was 5 (just entering kindergarten), I told my mom I didn't want to sleep with her anymore and that I wanted my own bed. And ever since then, I slept on my own. But I loved the times I slept with my mom. Even now, when my mom holds me (when I'm sick) I have this intense feeling of comfort and love that stuck with me from childhood. I loved co-sleeping with my parents and have no negative consequences from it (I sleep like a champ at night!) so my DH and I are also practicing co-sleeping with our LO. Did you co-sleep with your parents growing up?
